    And a songstress's house, easy of approach,

    housed every winsome, full-breasted maiden.

    Luxury and a pleasant life had nourished her,

    so her bosom bore the fruit of youth.

    بِمَعْزَفَةٍ وأخرى بالرّبابِ

    Among them was a singing lute-player, and another

    with a stringed instrument, and another with a rebab;

    كَصَوْت الرَّعْد من خَلَلِ السَّحابِ

    and a skilled performer keeping time on a drum,

    like thunder sounding through the clouds;

    أَحَنَّ من الخليعِ إلى التَّصابي

    and one accompanying her companions with a reed flute,

    more yearning than a libertine for youthful dalliance;

    and a dancer on a ball and a rope,

    like lightning's flash or a mirage's shimmer.

    There I rode the mounts of pleasure until

    my mounts halted there, worn out.

    Not a virgin remained there who did not

    yearn for me, her heart mad with love for me.

    I keep company with this one, and that one grows jealous,

    and chides me, or voices her reproach in hints.

    And another carries letters between us,

    in secret, and returns with the reply.

    No sooner had I sought it out than it made off

    with all I possessed, and ruined my earnings.
