لِصَدِيْقٍto a friend لَنَاof ours صَدِيْقَةُa female friend سُوءٍbadness
لِصَدِيْقٍ لَنَا صَدِيْقَةُ سُوءٍ
رَحِمَmay have mercy اللَّهُGod مَنْwhoever لَحَاهُrebukes him عَلَيْهَاfor her
رَحِمَ اللَّهُ مَنْ لَحَاهُ عَلَيْهَا
A friend of ours has a wretched female friend;
For a friend of ours, an evil female friend,
May God have mercy on whoever rebukes him for her.
May God have mercy on him who censures her.
يُقْبِلُapproaches اللَّيْلُthe night حِيْنَwhen تُقْبِلُshe approaches لَوْلاَwere it not for
يُقْبِلُ اللَّيْلُ حِيْنَ تُقْبِلُ لَوْلاَ
وَضَحٌwhiteness فِيin سَوَادِthe blackness سَالِفَتَيْهَاthe two sides of her neck
وَضَحٌ فِي سَوَادِ سَالِفَتَيْهَا
Night approaches when she approaches, were it not for
The night embraces when she embraces, were it not for
Whiteness amid the blackness on both sides of her neck.
The daylight in the darkness of her two companions.
شَفَتَاهَاher two lips غَلِيْظَتَانِboth thick وَلَكِنْbut
شَفَتَاهَا غَلِيْظَتَانِ وَلَكِنْ
جُعِلwas bestowed الانْضِمَامُtightness فِيin شَفْرَيْهَاher two eyelid rims
جُعِل الانْضِمَامُ فِي شَفْرَيْهَا
Her lips are thick, but
Her lips are thick but
Tightness was bestowed upon her eyelid rims.
The compression is in her mouth.
رُبَّmany a فَأْرٍmouse وَخُنْفَسَاءٍand a beetle أُثِيْرَاboth were stirred up
رُبَّ فَأْرٍ وَخُنْفَسَاءٍ أُثِيْرَا
مِنْfrom خِلاَلِamong الشُّقُوقِthe cracks مِنْfrom قَدَمَيْهَاher two feet
مِنْ خِلاَلِ الشُّقُوقِ مِنْ قَدَمَيْهَا
Many a mouse and beetle have been stirred up
Many a tumult and commotion were stirred
From among the cracks in her feet.
Through the crevices between her feet.
إِنَّهَاindeed she مِثْلُlike لَوْنِهَاher color فَإِذَاso whenever مَاan emphatic particle
إِنَّهَا مِثْلُ لَوْنِهَا فَإِذَا مَا
زَمَرَتْshe played the flute خِلْتَyou imagined سَاقَهَاher shin بِيَدَيْهَاin her two hands
زَمَرَتْ خِلْتَ سَاقَهَا بِيَدَيْهَا
She is like her complexion; so whenever
She is just like her color so when
She plays the flute, you imagine her shin is in her hands.
She buzzed, her leg touched her hand.
وَإِذَاand when خَانَbetrayed (perhaps intended: 'the time came') أَنْto تُوَدِّعَshe bids farewell وَارَتْshe hid
وَإِذَا خَانَ أَنْ تُوَدِّعَ وَارَتْ
نَايَهَاher flute فِيin اليَسَارِthe left one مِنْof مِنْخَرَيْهَاher two nostrils
نَايَهَا فِي اليَسَارِ مِنْ مِنْخَرَيْهَا
And when [the time came] for her to take her leave, she hid
And if he is about to bid farewell and turns away
Her flute in her left nostril.
She sways her snout to the left of her nostrils.
وَصَحِيْحٍand a healthy man مُسَلِّمٍoffering greetings صَرَعَتْهُfelled him
وَصَحِيْحٍ مُسَلِّمٍ صَرَعَتْهُ
نَفَحَاتُwafts الصُّنَانِrank body odor مِنْfrom إِبِطَيْهَاher two armpits
نَفَحَاتُ الصُّنَانِ مِنْ إِبِطَيْهَا
And many a healthy man offering greetings was felled
A true, surrendered man she felled
By wafts of rank body odor from her armpits.
With the exhalations of the fangs from her armpits.
