عِنْدِيI have مُعَتَّقَةٌaged wine تَوَدُّكَloves you صَافِيَهْclear
وَنَدِيْمُكَand your drinking companion الدَّمِثُaffable الرَّقِيْقُgentle الحَاشِيَهْthe disposition
I have a clear, aged wine that loves you,
I have a fair one who fondly waits for you,
And your affable drinking companion, gentle in manner.
Your boon companion, gentle, slim and true.
فَإِذَاthen when طَرِبْتَyou yearn إِلَىfor السَّمَاعِmusic تَرَنَّمَتْshe sings
بِيْضَاءُa fair-skinned woman ذَاهِبَةٌgoing off بِعَقْلِكَwith your wits دَاهِيَهْa cunning woman
Then, when you yearn for music, she sings—
When you're inclined to music's swell, she'll sing
A cunning, fair-skinned woman who steals your wits.
A beauty rendering your mind its fee.
تَصِلُjoins الغِنَاءَthe singing يَمِيْنَهَاher right hand بِشَمَالِهَاwith her left hand
كَمُثَلَّثٍlike a triangle أَضْلاَعُهُits sides مُتَسَاوِيَهْequal
Her right hand joins her singing to her left,
Her singing binds the right hand to the left
Like a triangle whose sides are equal.
As angles of triangle, all equal length.
وَتُجِيْبُهَاand answers her سَوْدَاءُa dark-skinned woman تُعْمِلُplays نَايَهَاher flute
فَتُرِيْكَso she shows you كَافُوراُcamphor يُقَاوِمُrivals غَالِيَهْghāliyah (dark perfume)
And a dark-skinned woman answers her, playing her flute,
The black one echoes, blowing on her flute,
Showing you camphor vying with ghāliyah perfume.
Shows you a camphor matching musk's expense.
فَاحْضَرْso come فَقَدْfor already حَضَرَhas arrived السُّرُورُjoy وَلاَand do not تَدَعْlet
يَوْمَاًa day يَفُوتُكَpass you by فَهِيَfor it is دُنْيَاa world فَانِيَهْpassing away
So come, for joy has arrived, and do not let
Attend, for joy is present. Do not let
A day pass you by, for this is a fleeting world.
Days slip away; this life will soon fade hence.
