واحَرَبَاalas, my anguish!
وَحَدَقٍand eyes مَرَائِضٍlanguid, as if ailing صِحَاحِhealthy
Oh, my anguish from lovely faces,
With faces like shining moons
And languid eyes, yet healthy,
And lively, sparkling eyes
وَمِنْand from ثُقُورٍmouths تُشْبِهُresemble الأَقَاحِيthe daisies
مَمْلُوءَةٍfilled مِنْwith بَرْدٍcoolness وَرَاحِand wine
And from mouths resembling daisies,
And breasts like ripening fruits
Filled with coolness and wine!
Full of coolness and delight
هُنَّthey (feminine) اللَّواتيthose who (feminine) أَفْسَدَتْruined صَلاَحيmy virtue
وَأَبْرَحَتْنيand tormented me أَيَّمَاextreme إِبْرَاحِtorment
They are the ones who ruined my virtue,
They are the ones who ruined my virtue
And tormented me beyond measure,
And led me far, far astray
وَتَرَكَتْand left لَيْلَىmy night بِلاwithout صَبَاحِdawn
And left my night without a dawn.
Leaving Layla without dawn’s light
