يَاah رُبَّmany a نَهْرٍriver مُدْفَإٍwarm مَلْآنِbrimming
جَمِّabundant in المُدُودِthe swelling waters مُعْمَرِwell-peopled المَغَانِيthe dwelling places
Ah, many a warm, brimming river,
O Lord of a flooding river, abundant
abundant in swelling waters, its haunts well peopled:
Gatherer of outstretched hands, enricher of songs,
الدُّحْرُthe duḥr fish والشُّبُوطُand the shubūṭ fish والبَنَانُand the banān fish
كَالطَّلْعِlike the palm blossoms مَجْنِيَّاًgathered مِنَfrom الجِنَانِthe gardens
the duḥr, shubūṭ, and banān fish
The ridges, the flatlands, and the hillsides
are like palm blossoms gathered from the gardens,
Are like plucked fruits from the gardens,
أَوْor كَقُدُودِlike the forms of أَذْرُعِarms الغَوَانِيthe beautiful women
مَكْسُوَةٍclothed مِنْby صَنْعَةِthe handiwork of الرَّحْمَنِthe All-Merciful
or like the shapely arms of beautiful women,
Or like the forearms of beautiful maidens
clothed by the handiwork of the All-Merciful,
Dressed in the workmanship of the Merciful.
كَأَنَّمَاas though يَنْظُرُit gazes مِنْfrom عِقْيَانِpure gold
أَوْor يَتَطَرَّفْنَthey dye their tips بِأُرْجُوَانِwith crimson
as though looking out from pure gold,
It's as though they look out from behind veils,
or dyeing their tips with crimson.
Or they flutter with purple tassels.
بَاكَرْتُهُI visited it early مَعْwith بَاكِرِthe earliest of الغِرْبَانِthe crows

I visited it early, with the earliest of the crows,
I met them at dawn with the early crows
among noble young men, all peers,
Among noble and peerless youths.
يُعْنَوْنَthey concern themselves بِالدِّيْوَانِwith the chancery وَالمَيْدَانِand the arena

وَلاَand do not يَعِفُّونَthey abstain عَنِfrom القِيَانِthe singing girls
who concern themselves with the chancery and the arena
They are known for their grace and valor,
and do not abstain from singing girls,
And do not refrain from battle,
بِمِثْلِwith something like أَحْدَاقٍeyes بِلاَwithout أَجْفَانِeyelids
كَأَنَّهَاas though it were جِلْدَةُthe skin of أُفْعُوَانِa serpent
with something like eyes without eyelids,
With eyes like those with no eyelids,
as though it were a serpent's skin,
As though they were the skin of snakes
تُزْعِجُit unsettles بِالأَطْمَاعِwith hopes وَالحِرْمَانِand deprivation

stirring unrest with hopes and deprivation,
Troubling with greed and deprivation.
more bountiful to its hungry food-gatherer
The downpours streamed over their pasturelands
مِنَthan الضَّوَارِيthe hunting beasts الغُضُفُdrooping الآذَانِthe ears

than the droop-eared hunting beasts
With roaring clouds and thunder,
and the fierce hawks and eagles.
And the breaker of tyrants and eagles.
