مَنْwho لِذَاكَfor that الطَّبَرْزَذِthe rock sugar الْمَسْحُوقِpowdered
مَنْ لِذَاكَ الطَّبَرْزَذِ الْمَسْحُوقِ
وَلِذَاكَand for that اللَّوْزِthe almonds الطَّرِيfresh الْمَدْقُوقِpounded
وَلِذَاكَ اللَّوْزِ الطَّرِي الْمَدْقُوقِ
Who is there for that powdered rock sugar,
Who can match that crushed tabarzad
and for those fresh, pounded almonds?
And that peeled soft almond
وَدَقِيْقُand flour السِّمْيِذِsemolina يُعْجَنُis kneaded بِالْمَاwith water (part of 'rosewater')
وَدَقِيْقُ السِّمْيِذِ يُعْجَنُ بِالْمَا
وَرْدِrose (completes 'rosewater') عُلِّىwas topped بِمِسْكِهِwith its musk المَسْحُوقِpowdered
وَرْدِ عُلِّى بِمِسْكِهِ المَسْحُوقِ
And semolina flour is kneaded with
When semolina dough is kneaded with water
rosewater and topped with its powdered musk.
And scent of musk is kneaded into perfume
ضُمَّwere combined أَجْزَاؤُهُits parts وَأُلِّفَand was fashioned أَجْسَاforms (first part)
ضُمَّ أَجْزَاؤُهُ وَأُلِّفَ أَجْسَا
ماًcompletion of 'forms' حَوَتْcontained كُلَّevery مَطْعَمٍdelicacy مَوْمُوقِbeloved
ماً حَوَتْ كُلَّ مَطْعَمٍ مَوْمُوقِ
Its ingredients were combined and fashioned into
Its ingredients are combined and unified
forms containing every beloved delicacy.
Into a substance that contains every delicacy
ثُمَّthen صَفُّوهُthey arranged it in rows كَالأَهِلَّةِlike crescent moons لاَحَتْappeared
ثُمَّ صَفُّوهُ كَالأَهِلَّةِ لاَحَتْ
لِمَوَاقِيْتِهَاat their appointed times حِيَالَfacing الشُّرُوقِthe sunrise
لِمَوَاقِيْتِهَا حِيَالَ الشُّرُوقِ
Then they arranged it like crescent moons appearing
Then strain it like a fine cloth that faces
at their appointed times, facing the sunrise.
The horizons at daybreak
مَاnot رَأَيْنَاwe have seen كَخُشْكِنَانِكَكَlike your khushkinanak المَوْthe described (first part)
مَا رَأَيْنَا كَخُشْكِنَانِكَكَ المَوْ
صُوفِcompletion of 'described' رَعْيَاًin observance لِحَقِّهِfor its due فِيamong الحُقُوقِrights
صُوفِ رَعْيَاً لِحَقِّهِ فِي الحُقُوقِ
We have seen nothing like your khushkinanak,
We have not seen clove trees like your well-groomed
as described, giving it its due among all rightful claims.
Ones, pasturing on their rightful land
أَيُّwhat قَلْبٍheart إِلَيْهِtoward it غَيْرُnot مَشُوقٍyearning
أَيُّ قَلْبٍ إِلَيْهِ غَيْرُ مَشُوقٍ
أَيُّwhat طَرْفٍeye إِلَيْهِtoward it غَيْرُnot عَلُوقِattached
أَيُّ طَرْفٍ إِلَيْهِ غَيْرُ عَلُوقِ
What heart does not yearn for it?
What heart is not infatuated with it
What eye is not captivated by it?
What glance is not tempted by it
غِبْتَyou were absent عَنِّيfrom me فَغَابَso it was absent عَنِّيfrom me نَصِيْبِيmy share
غِبْتَ عَنِّي فَغَابَ عَنِّي نَصِيْبِي
أَنْتَyou عِنْدِيin my view بِذَاكَfor that غَيْرُnot خَلِيْقِsuited
أَنْتَ عِنْدِي بِذَاكَ غَيْرُ خَلِيْقِ
You were absent from me, so my share was absent too.
You went away from me, so my fortune went away
In my view, that does not befit you.
With that gone, you are no longer suited for me
لِيْسَthere is not لِيfor me مِنْهُof it غَيْرَexcept أَنِّيthat I إِذَاwhen مَاemphasis after 'when'
لِيْسَ لِي مِنْهُ غَيْرَ أَنِّي إِذَا مَا
عَنَّcame to mind لِيto me ذِكْرُهُthe thought of it أَغَصُّI choke بِرِيْقِيon my saliva
عَنَّ لِي ذِكْرُهُ أَغَصُّ بِرِيْقِي
I have nothing of it, except that whenever
I have nothing of it left except that whenever
the thought of it comes to me, I choke on my saliva.
Its memory refreshes, I choke on my saliva
