How sweet a day of wanton abandon and idleness,
O good day of leisure and idleness
which I shortened with enjoyment and delight,
I shortened it with enjoyment and pleasure

In a garden revealed to our sights
in the growing jewels it had donned.
Adorned with brightly colored flowers

And the rain weeps amid its plants,
The rain weeps through its vegetation
and the lightning laughs at it with a gloater's laugh.
Lightning laughs at it, the laugh of a gloating foe

Grapes hanging in their branches

And the doves' melodies answered one another at midmorning,
The cooing of doves echoes at dawn
cooing among nightingales and ringdoves.
Answered by nightingales and songbirds

فيه الشّمُولُ من العُقُولِ فَجَارَتِ
A day for which I praised Time, and judgment was entrusted
A day I praised time for it
therein to wine by reason—and it ruled unjustly.
And the comprehensiveness of minds excelled
