وَكُنْتُand I used to أُحَارِبُbattle رَيْبَvicissitudes الزَّمَاtime (word continues)
نِcompletion of 'time' أَيَّامَduring the days أَعْيُنُهُits eyes نَائِمَهْasleep
And I used to battle the vicissitudes of time,
I used to fight the doubts of fate
in the days when its eyes were asleep.
In days when its eyes were closed in sleep
فَلَمَّاthen when تَيَقَّظَit awoke سَالَمْتُهُI made peace with it
وَمَنْand whoever خَافَfeared سَطْوَتَهُits onslaught سَالَمَهْmade peace with it
Then, when it awoke, I made peace with it;
But when it woke I made my peace
and whoever fears its onslaught makes peace with it.
And whoever feared its tyranny yielded
وَقَدْand indeed كُنْتُI used to أُسْرعُhasten فِيin قَمْرِهِits gambling
فَقَدْso indeed صِرْتُI have become أَقْنَعُcontent بِالْقَائِمَهْwith the original stake
And I used to rush to gamble with it;
Eager I was in its bright moon
so now I am content with the original stake.
Now content just to stay afoot
