أَخِيmy brother بَلْrather رَئِيْسِيmy chief بَلْrather أَمِيْرِيmy prince وَسَيِّدِيand my master
وَمَنْand the one who لَمْnot يَزَلْcease لِلْفَضْلِfor generosity وَالبِرِّand kindness مَأْمُولاَlooked to with hope
My brother—nay, my chief—nay, my prince and master,
And you who have always been looked to for generosity and kindness,
أَغِثْنَاcome to our aid فَإِنَّاfor we قَدْindeed ظَمِئْنَاhave grown thirsty وَرَوِّنَاand quench our thirst
مِنَfrom الرَّائِقِthe clear wine المَطْبُوخِboiled وَلْيَكُand let it be مَعْسُولاَsweetened with honey
Come to our aid, for we have grown thirsty, and quench our thirst
With clear, boiled wine, and let it be sweetened with honey.
فَنَحْنُfor we بِحَالٍin a state لَوْif تَرَانَاyou saw us لَخِلْتَنَاyou would think us
لِئَامَاًbase men وَإِنْalthough كُنَّاwe are كِرَامَاًnoble بَهَالِيْلاَmagnanimous men
For we are in such a state that, if you saw us, you would think us
Base men, though we are noble, magnanimous men.
سِتَارَتُنَاour curtain مَهْجُورَةٌneglected وَكُؤُوسُنَاand our cups
تُعَلَّلُare comforted بِالنَّزْرِwith the scant amount الصُّبَابَةِthe remnant تَعْلِيْلاَas mere consolation
Our curtain is neglected, and our cups
Are merely comforted with a scant remnant.
تَرَىyou see مَاءَهَاtheir water أَضْعَافَmany times دَرٍّthe yield of رَحِيْقِهَاtheir nectar
فَتَحْسَبُهَاso you take them for فَوْقَabove الأَكُفِّthe palms قَنَادِيْلاَlamps
You see their water many times the amount of their nectar,
So you take them for lamps above the palms.
وَحَدَّثَنَاand he talked to us السَّقِيthe cupbearer لِيَبْقَىso that it would last شَرَابُهُhis drink
وَقَدْand already قِيْلَit has been said فِيabout السَّاقيthe cupbearer المُحَدِّثِthe talkative مَاwhat قِيْلاَhas been said
And the cupbearer talked to us to make his drink last,
Though people have said what they have said about the talkative cupbearer.
