مذبةٌa fly-whisk تهدىis offered as a gift إلىto سيّدٍa lord
مذبةٌ تهدى إلى سيّدٍ
ماnot زالceased عنfrom كلevery وليfriend يَذُبْhe wards off harm
ما زال عن كل ولي يَذُبْ
A fly-whisk offered to a lord
A doe leads to a lord
Who has always defended every friend.
Who still loathes every guardian
طريفَةٌa charming novelty لمnot يخْلُbe devoid منof مثلِهاits like
طريفَةٌ لم يخْلُ من مثلِها
مجلسُa gathering ذيone possessing ظرْفٍrefinement ولاnor ذيone possessing أَرَبْdiscernment
مجلسُ ذي ظرْفٍ ولا ذي أَرَبْ
A charming novelty, whose like has never been lacking
A graceful one unmatched
In the gathering of anyone with refinement or discernment.
In the assembly of the refined and the coarse
ناصيةُthe forelock الأدهمthe black horse فيin عُودِهاits shaft
ناصيةُ الأدهم في عُودِها
لمnot تكit was منfrom عُرْفٍa mane ولاnor منfrom ذَنَبْa tail
لم تك من عُرْفٍ ولا من ذَنَبْ
A black horse’s forelock is set in its shaft;
The forehead of the black antelope in her necklace
It came neither from a mane nor from a tail.
Was neither common nor vulgar
وذاكand that فالٌa good omen إنif تأملتَهُyou consider it
وذاك فالٌ إن تأملتَهُ
لماfor what تُرجّىis hoped for منof نواصيforelocks (figuratively, summits) الرتَبْranks
لما تُرجّى من نواصي الرتَبْ
And that is a good omen, if you consider it,
That stallion, if you observe him
For the hoped-for forelocks of rank.
Is not what you expect from the napes of mounts
لطيفةٌa dainty thing تجمعُهاholds it together حليةٌan ornament
لطيفةٌ تجمعُها حليةٌ
مُذْهَبَةٌgilded فيon قائمٍa handle منتخَبْchoice
مُذْهَبَةٌ في قائمٍ منتخَبْ
A dainty thing, held together by an ornament,
A delicate one whose ornament
Gilded, on a choice handle.
Is gilded on a choice standing
كأنهاas though it were فيon ظهرthe back مجدولةٍa slender woman
كأنها في ظهر مجدولةٍ
ذؤابةٌa tress أنبوبُهاits tube منof ذَهَبْgold
ذؤابةٌ أنبوبُها من ذَهَبْ
As though it were, upon a slender woman’s back,
As if it were on the back of a streamlined
A tress whose casing is of gold.
Gazelle whose tube is of gold
قليلةُsmall المقدارvalue لكنهاbut it
قليلةُ المقدار لكنها
أكثرُgreater منهاthan it أنهاthat it is منfrom مُحِبْone who loves
أكثرُ منها أنها من مُحِبْ
Small in value, yet
Little in quantity but more
Its greater worth is that it comes from one who loves you.
Because it is from a lover
