ضَحِكَتْshe laughed مِنْat شَيْبَةٍa gray hair ضَحِكَتْlaughed
فِيin سَوَادِthe blackness of اللَّمَّةِthe shoulder-length hair الرَّجِلَهْwavy
She laughed at a gray hair that laughed
She laughed at a strand of gray
amid the blackness of my wavy locks.
In the blackness of my curly hair
ثُمَّthen قَالَتْshe said وَهْيَwhile she هَازِلَةٌjesting
جَاءَcame هَذَاthis الشَّيْبُgrayness بِالعَجَلَهْin haste
Then she said, while jesting,
Then jokingly she said:
"This grayness came in haste."
“This gray has come too soon!”
قُلْتُI said مِنءfrom حُبِّيْكِmy love for you لاَnot كِبَرٍold age
شَابَturned gray رَأْسِيmy head فَانْثَنَتْthen she turned away خَجِلَهْabashed
I said, "From my love for you, not old age,
I said: “It’s not from old age,
my head turned gray"; then she turned away, abashed.
But from love for you that turned my hair gray.”
وَثَنَتْand she lowered جَفْنَاًan eyelid عَلَىover كَحَلٍkohl
هِيَshe مِنْهُwith it الدَّهْرُforever مُكْتَحِلَهْwearing kohl
And she lowered an eyelid over kohl
She lowered her eyelid lined with kohl.
with which her eyes are forever lined.
Time itself adorned it with kohl.
أَكْثَرَتْshe increased مِنْهُat it تَعَجُّبَهَاher wonder
وَهْيَthough she تَجْنِيْهِshe causes it وَتَعْجَبُand she marvels لَهْat it
She marveled greatly at it,
In wonder she picked it out
though she causes it and wonders at it.
And marveled amusingly
كَيْفَhow لاَnot يَبْلَىwears away شَبَابُthe youth of فَتًىa young man
تَقْطَعِيْنَyou sever الحَبْلَthe cord إِنْif وَصَلَهْhe joins it
How could a young man's youth not wear away
How could the youth of a young man not wear out
when you sever the cord whenever he joins it?
If you keep cutting the rope when it’s joined?
مُفْرَدٌleft alone بِالْبَثِّwith sorrow مُصْطَبِرٌpatiently enduring
كُلُّall مَاthat حَمَّلْتِهِyou made him bear حَمَلَهْhe bore it
Alone with his sorrow, patiently enduring,
Alone, with separation I’m patient
all you made him bear, he bore.
Bearing all the burdens she loaded on me.
وَهْيَand she مِثْلُlike البَدْرِthe full moon تَحْمِلُهُbears it
قَامَةٌa figure كَالغُصْنِlike a bough مُعْتَدِلَهْwell-proportioned
And she is like the full moon, borne
She’s like the full moon carrying it.
by a well-proportioned figure like a bough.
Her stature is like a supple branch.
وَلَهَاand she has لَحْظٌa glance تَظُنُyou suppose لَهُbecause of it
أَنَّهَاthat she مِنْfrom قَهْوَةٍwine ثَمِلَهْintoxicated
And she has a glance that makes you think
Her glances, you’d think
that she is drunk on wine.
Were from a brimming cup of coffee.
أَقْصَدَتْshe struck fatally قَلْبِيmy heart بِهِwith it فَمَضَىthen sped
سَهْمُهُits arrow فِيْهِthrough it وَقَدْand had already قَتَلَهْkilled it
She struck my heart dead with it; then sped
She aimed them into my heart so
its arrow through it, having slain it.
Her arrow pierced it and killed me.
قَدْindeed تَجَشَّمْتُI undertook the hardship السُّؤَالَpleading فَمَاbut not
نَفَعَتْنِيbenefited me عِنْدَهَاwith her المَسَلَهْthe plea
I have braved the hardship of pleading, but
I undertook to question her, but gained
my plea availed me nothing with her.
No benefit from her.
وَشَكَوْتُand I complained of الوَجْدَlove's anguish وَهْيَwhile she بِمَاto what
أَشْتَكِيْهِI complain of it غَيْرُnot مُحْتَفِلَهْconcerned
And I complained of love's anguish; yet she, to what
I complained of love’s torment while she—
I complain of, pays no heed.
My plaints did not concern her.
عَاذِلِيmy reproacher دَعْleave عَنْكَaway from you عَذْلَreproaching فَتًىa young man
لَجَّpersisted stubbornly فِيin عِصْيَانِdefying مَنْwhoever عَذَلَهْreproached him
My reproacher, leave off reproaching a young man
Chider, stop blaming a young man
who stubbornly defies whoever reproaches him.
Who slipped into disobeying the one who blamed him.
أَنَاI مَشْغُولُpreoccupied الفُؤَادِthe heart بِهَاwith her
وَهْيَwhile she بِالْهِجْرَانِwith shunning مُشْتَغِلَهْoccupied
My heart is preoccupied with her,
My heart is preoccupied with her
while she is preoccupied with shunning me.
While she is preoccupied with avoiding me.
