أَرِقْتُI lay awake أَمْor نِمْتَyou slept لِضَوْءِat the light of بَارِقِa lightning flash
مُؤْتَلِقٍgleaming مِثْلَlike الفُؤَادِthe heart الخَافِقِthrobbing
Did I lie awake, or did you sleep, at the light of a lightning flash,
gleaming like a throbbing heart,
كَأَنَّهُas though it were إِصْبَعُa finger of كَفِّthe hand of السَّارِقِthe thief
يَسُوقُهَاdrives it along الرَّعْدُthe thunder بِغَيْرِwithout سَائِقِa driver
as though it were a finger on a thief's hand?
Thunder drives it along without a driver,
سَوْقَthe driving of الْحُدَاةِthe camel-drivers طُلَّحِexhausted الأَيَانِقِthe she-camels
لَمَّاwhen رَآهَاsaw it زَاهِرُthe bloom of الحَدَائِقِthe gardens
as camel-drivers drive exhausted she-camels.
When the gardens' bloom saw it,
مَدَّstretched out يَدَthe hand of الْمُصَافِحِthe handshaker الْمُعَانِقِthe embracer
وَهَزَّand swayed أَعْطَافَthe sides of مَشُوقٍone filled with longing شَائِقِinspiring longing
it stretched out a hand in greeting and embrace,
and swayed its sides like a yearning, alluring lover.
فَلَمْand did not يَزَلْcease حَتَّىuntil الصَّبَاحِdawn الْفَاتِقِcleaving the darkness
يَبْكِيweeping بِجَفْنَيْwith the two eyelids of مُثْكِلٍone bereaved of a child وَعَاشِقِand a lover
Nor did it cease until the breaking dawn,
weeping with the eyelids of a bereaved parent and a lover.
كَمْhow much خَبَّأَتْit concealed فِيin لَهَبِthe blaze of الْبَوَارِقِthe lightning flashes
لِعَاطِلِfor the unadorned الْوِهَادِthe lowlands وَالشَّوَاهِقِand the lofty peaks
How much it hid within the lightning's blaze
for the unadorned lowlands and lofty peaks:
مِنَof الْعُقُودِthe necklaces وَمِنَand of الْمَخَانِقِthe chokers
فَالأَرْضُso the earth بَعْدَafter الْعُرْيِnakedness كَالْيَلاَمِقِlike robes
necklaces and chokers!
So the earth, once naked, is like robes
مِنَof الأَقَاحِيthe daisies وَمِنَand of الشَّقَائِقِthe anemones
of daisies and anemones.
