طَافَcame visiting خَيَالُphantom الحَبِيْبِthe beloved فِيin الغَلَسِthe predawn darkness
طَافَ خَيَالُ الحَبِيْبِ فِي الغَلَسِ
فَبِتُّso I spent the night مِنْهُfrom it بِأَعْظَمِin the greatest الأُنْسِdelight in companionship
فَبِتُّ مِنْهُ بِأَعْظَمِ الأُنْسِ
The beloved's phantom came visiting in the predawn darkness.
The image of my beloved circled in seclusion
So I passed the night in the utmost delight it brought.
So I spent the night with utmost intimacy
طَيْفُphantom حَبِيْبٍa beloved حَفِظْتُI preserved خُلَّتَهُhis friendship
طَيْفُ حَبِيْبٍ حَفِظْتُ خُلَّتَهُ
وَأَدْرَكَتْهُand overtook him مَلاَلَةٌweariness فَنَسِيso he forgot
وَأَدْرَكَتْهُ مَلاَلَةٌ فَنَسِي
The phantom of a beloved whose friendship I had kept—
The apparition of a beloved I kept his company
Yet weariness overtook him, so he forgot.
Yet boredom overcame him and he forgot
قَصَّرَshortened لَيْلِيmy night بِطِيْبِwith the sweetness of زَوْرَتِهِits visit
قَصَّرَ لَيْلِي بِطِيْبِ زَوْرَتِهِ
وَكَانَand was لَيْلِيmy night أَمَدَّlonger مِنْthan نَفَسِيmy breath
وَكَانَ لَيْلِي أَمَدَّ مِنْ نَفَسِي
It shortened my night with the sweetness of its visit,
My night was shortened by his pleasant visit
And my night had been longer than my breath.
And my night became longer than my soul
