خذ يا زمان أماناً من يدي أملي

You have from my affection a supporter who does not fail
طرقتها والليل وحف الجناح
I visited her while the night spread its wings
تبسم في ليل الشباب مشيب
He smiled in the night of youth though he was gray
أعندك أن وجدي واكتئابي
Do you think my love and melancholy
أتيت إلى بابك المرتجى
I came to your door, hopeful
إني غنيت بعز الدين عن نفر
Though I sang praise, to Al Adid all honor due,
رتبة الحكم السنيه
The structure of traditional rule
خطبتني الخطوب بالهم لما
You betrothed me with worries when
سأجمل نفسي عنك فعل مخفف
I will adorn my soul with a gentle act
أيها الناس والخطاب إلى من
O people, my address is to whom
أتاني جوابك عن رقعتي
Your reply to my note came
أيا سفح المقطم كم سفحنا
O slope of Muqattam, how we leaned
أقول والصدق فيما قلت يعضدني
I speak the truth in what I say, and it gives me strength,
إذا أكثر المحموم من هذيانه
When the fevered one rambles in his delirium
من استعان بغير الله لم يعن
Whoever seeks help from other than Allah will not be helped
وسمت بنعماك الرقاب تبرعاً
With your blessings the necks became generously marked
عنان الليالي في يديك مسلم
The reins of the nights are in your hands, O protector,
إجر النسيم إلى السمائم
The breeze blows to the thin clouds
ثغر الزمان بنجم الدين مبتسم
The dimples of time smile with the morning star of religion
يا مسبل الستر لا تكشفه عن رجل
O you who conceal with a veil, do not unveil it from a man
ياليك من بشر تهش وتبسم
O you, the best of men, who smile and rejoice,
نسيب ولكن بالقنا والصوارم
With blades and spears, yet gently reproaching;
ثغر الهدى متبلج بسام
The smile of guidance glittering with joy
سهلت حزونة وجده وغرامه
Her sadness eased, and her love and passion grew
كن لي على شكر ما أوليت من نعم
Be my aid in gratitude for the blessings I've been granted
ولاؤك مفروض على كل مسلم
Your loyalty is incumbent upon every Muslim
خلعت عليك مواسم الأيام
I bestowed upon you the seasons of days,
أمعتسف المهامه والموامي
The new moons and full moons shone
دنا العيد هنيت أمثاله
The feast has come, congratulations to the like of it
أراد علو منزلة وقدر
He desired an exalted position and esteem
كلما رمت سلمه رام حربي
Whenever Salma throws, my warrior heart yearns,
ولو لم يكن يدري بما جهل الورى
Though he knew not what excellence the world was ignorant of,
ألا قل لكتاب الصناعة كلهم
Tell all the masters of craft,
لولا جفون ومقل
Were it not for eyelids tinged with kohl
ابن لي عن نهارك كيف ظلا
Tell me of your day, did it pass in shade
وما كنت أرضى عن علاك بذا الجفا
I was not pleased that you treated me so harshly,
لك أن تقول إذا أردت وتفعلا
You may speak and act as you wish
من أجل هيبة ذا المقام المذهل
For the dignity of this magnificent status
مرحباً مرحباً قدومك بالسع
Welcome, welcome your coming with joy
أفي أهل ذا النادي عليم أسائله
Is there amongst the people of this place a knowledgeable one that I may ask,
أيا أذن الأيام إن قلت فاسمعي
O ear of time, if I say then hear
أثمت يا من هجا السادات والخلفا

Do you know a way not yet trodden,
أرى كل جمع بالردى يتفوق
I see every group exceeding in calamity,
تناولت المكارم والمساعي
I have undertaken favors and efforts
سرتم فلم تطب الإقامة بعدكم
You left, and staying was no longer sweet without you
يا مالك الرق ومن حقه
O owner of slaves, to whom
أيها القارئ إذا مت
O reader when I die
عسى منجد الأظعان يوماً يغيرها
May the helper of the oppressed one day change them,
فقالت دليلك قلت أضحت
She said you are my guide, I said you have become
دعوا كل برق شمتم غير بارق
Let every lightning you have envied, flashing
لك الحسب الباقي على عقب الدهر
You have lasting honor throughout time
أمالي من عذولكم عذير
I have no excuse for your abandonment
هي الصدمة الأولى فمن بان صبره
The first shock, so whoever shows patience
ما عن هوى الرشأ العذري أعذار
I have no more excuses for my innocent love,
قبولاً وإن بان عجز الخواطر
Acceptance, though the thoughts seemed inadequate
لا وعيون لحظها ساهر
She has eyes that never sleep
سرت نفحة كالمسك أزهى وأعطر
A breeze blew, fragrant as musk, delightful and sweet,
في مثل مدحك شرح القول مختصر
In praising you, brevity in speech is best
المدح يدري أنكم أكبر
He also said:
يا مطلق العبرات وهي غزار
O unleasher of flowing tears
سجوداً فهذا صاحب الركن والحجر
Bow in prostration, for this is the Keeper of the Cornerstone.
طمع المرء في الحياة غرور
A man's greed for life is vanity
سرى لك عرف في النسيم الذي سرى
A gentle breeze carried to you a familiar scent
الشعر يعلم أن قدرك أكبر
The poetry knows your worth is greater
أبني إن ذقت الردى
Roses are red, violets are blue, I cannot translate, so I'll stay true. Poetry's delightful, languages differ, best leave translating, to not err.
بان العزا وفؤادي ماله جلد
My grief is exposed, and my heart has no endurance
حرقة قلبي فيك لا تخمد
My burning heart for you will not be quenched
صرف النسيب إلى اللوى وزرود
The relation turned away to the beloved and flowers
أما وخدود ألفن الصدودا
Her cheeks refused all but the steeds' clash
لك المجد والفضل الذي ليس يجحد
You deserve all the glory and merit, which no one denies
إذا لم يكن بين القلوب صدود
If there were no estrangements between hearts
يا أحسن الناس وجهاً
O fairest of men in face
أسماء ملك تحتها لك مقعد
Names of a king under which you have a seat
بصعود منزلة وجد صاعد
The ascender found, with ascending a status,
يا خير من نظم المديح لمجده
O best composer of praise poetry for his glory,
بصفات مجدك يشرف التمجيد
Your virtues glorify praise,
أمنت من الغرام على فؤادي
I felt secure from passion in my heart
اليوم عاد إلى المحلة روحها
Today, its soul returned to Al Mahallah
أيخفى صحيح الوجد والسقم لائح
The true agony and pain are concealed,
أرى ابني علي ركب الله فيهما
I see my sons whom God has instilled in them
عبد الرحيم قد احتجت

بني إن سقيت كأس الردى
My son, if you drink the cup of misery

O you who ascend to the highest ranks
أفخر فحسبك ما أوتيت من حسب
I boast, and your lineage suffices you, pride
أدركت أوتارا من الأعداء
I seized the reins from enemies,
نذرت لك العلا ونذرت بري

إذا قدرت على العلياء بالغلب
If you can overcome the lofty ones by force
داويت ما نفع العليل دوائي
My treatment did not cure the sick one,
دم أبا فاتك حليف بقاء
Blood of Abu Fatak, eternal ally,
تسائلني عن قصتي متجاهلاً
You ask me about my story, feigning ignorance,
يا غائباً عنا قد اش
O you who are absent from us
قل للمشارف عني
Tell those nearby about me
لحى الله مدحاً لا يرجى ثوابه
I praise God's beard without hope of reward
ن نشطت فقل لها لا تربعي
When she stirred, tell her do not sit
لئن قل صبر فالمصاب عظيم
Though you say have patience, the affliction is severe,
لو اطلعت على سري وإضماري
If you knew my inner thoughts and feelings
إن كان عطفك للإعجاب يختال
If your kindness is prone to admiration
سفر الزمان بواشح من بشره
The era traveled with radiant smiles on its face,
لم يبق لابن دخان عند خالقه
Ibn Dukhan's son has no wish left with his Creator
يا سائلي عن فروض الجود أو سننه
O you who ask about the obligations of generosity or its ways
فدى لبني رزيك قوم رفعتهم
I redeem my people whom I raised
أفدي معذب مهجتي أفديه
I sacrifice my tormented soul, I sacrifice it
سأبكي على ابني مدتي وحياتي
I will cry for my son for my lifetime
أبا شمس الخلافة وهو نعت
O Father of the Caliphate, and this description
الدمع يهمل والفؤاد عليل
The tears are neglected, and the heart is sick
أخلفت ميعادك يا أفعل
You broke your promise, O Afal
تقبل الله صوماً أنت واصله
May Allah accept your fasting, as you reach its end
قل لابن دخان إذا جئته
Say to the son of smoke, when you come to him
هي سلوة حلت عقود وفائها
She is a consolation that untied the knots of his loyalty
أنادي من الإخوان غير مجيب
I call out to companions who do not respond,
وقائلة مالي أرى الجو مظلماً
She said, "Why do I see the sky so gloomy
يا من أدل يبسط العذر من جارا
O you who graciously offers excuses to a neighbor
حرت ماذا أقول فيما دهاني
I am perplexed what to say of what has saddened me,
بقاؤك يا فارس المسلمينا
Your staying, O knight of the Muslims
يا منعماً بنداه يعدم العدم
O He who is graced with His blessings, dispelling nonexistence
يا سيداً ساحة أبوابه
O master of the field whose gates
ونهج سعت إليك فيه طرائف
A path I took towards you, lined with subtle charms,
أناجيك والهم الدخيل مقيم
I implore you while worries persistently linger,
مل وقد ملت إلى وداده
The passion left me, to my beloved drawn,
فؤاد بجمر الشوق والوجد يحرق
My heart is burning with longing and passion
في مثل ذا الموقف المشهود تحتلب
In moments like these, words flow freely
عادت عليك أهلة الأعياد
The festival seasons have returned to you,
سقم الحاظ الحسان الخرد
The illness of sight, the beauty of the young maid,
ولي حرمة الضيف الغريب وحرمة
I have the sanctity of the stranger guest and sanctity
إذا كان الولاء عليك يلوي
If loyalty to you twists
هب النبط لم تعرف طريقاً إلى العلى
The Nabateans did not know the path to excellence,
يا ملكاً ساحة أبوابه
O King whose gates
هم الزمان بها فمنذ كفلتها
Time has tested her, so since I took care of her
رجونا قطع هجرك بالوصال
We hoped your estrangement would end with reunion
أنهي إليك من خفي حالي
I confide to you my hidden state
لم أرد الجواب في الظهر إلا
I did not want an answer at noon except
خفة الروح واجتناب الثقاله
Lightness of spirit and avoidance of heaviness
كتبي إليك على مقدار ما اتفقا
My writings to you accord with what befalls
بات يرعى السها بطرف مؤرق
He grazes the dawn with a restless gaze,
قل للمشارف عني
Tell those who associate with me
رأيت أبا القنص ضاقت به
I saw the hunter whose means of livelihood
خليلي هل تحت السماء بنية
My friend, is there under the sky a structure
أنسيم عرفك أم شميم عرار
Is it the scent of your breeze, or the fragrance of meadows,
يا سيداً في أوصافه
O master with praiseworthy traits
لك يبق نوع تقتضيه كرامة
You still have a kind that is required by generosity
يا عاضد الدين من المهد
O supporter of the faith from the cradle,
يا ليلة السبت كم غادرت في كبدي
O Saturday night, how much you left in my heart
يا جامع الشمل المبدد
O uniter of the scattered group
إليك أبا إسحاق عنت حويجة
To you, O Abu Ishaq, I complain of Huwija
هي البدر من سنة البدر أملح
She is the full moon, brighter than the full moon
إلى كم أحوك الشعر في الذم والمدح
To how many have I spun poetry in censure and praise
سعيك للجمعة محسوب
Your efforts on Fridays are counted,
قصدتك من أرض الحطيم قصائد
I sought you from the land of ruin with poems
يا كاشف الضر إذا ناداه أيوب
O Reliever of harm when Job called upon You,
أيحسب صرف الدهر أني عائبه
Does the vicissitudes of fate think I blame it
قد أتتني تلك اليد البيضاء
That white hand reached out to me
أرى حنك الوزارة صار سيفاً
I see the wisdom of authority has become a sword
فاعلم وأنت بما أريد مقاله
Know that what I want to say
ترى عند نجم الدين علم بما عندي
Does Najm al-Din know that I have abundant praise
هم الأحبة إن جاروا وإن عدلوا
Whether they are fair or unfair, they are my beloved
عطية إن ذقت طعم الحمام
If I taste the flavor of pigeons
خادم ذيل المجلس العادلي
Servant at the end of the just council
خاطر فإن الحظ للمخاطر
Take risks, for fortune favors the bold
يا موقداً نار القرى للساري
O fireplace, ignite the village’s fire
حاشاك من هذا الخطاب خطاباً
Spare me from this speech, oh the best
الله أعلى وأعلم
God is most High and All-Knowing
ليت النسيم إذا حملت عاتقه
If only the breeze, when bearing upon its shoulder
غير بعيد وغير ممتنع
Not far nor unattainable
النصر من قرناء عزمك فاعزم
Victory comes from your resolute determination, so be resolute
ألا قل لعز الدين لا زال جده
Alas say to the mighty Ala ad-Din
فديت من لم ينقع بره
I sacrifice myself for one whose eyes
شكا ألم التوديع وهو أليم
He lamented the pain of parting, though it was agonizing,
هل تبلغن لبختيار
Does Bakhtiyar reach
أقسمت لا كشفت لمصر غمة
I swear I will not reveal Egypt's troubles,
نبهتني حمامة بسحير
A dove awakened me at dawn
أصبت في خير أعضائي وأعضادي
I have been blessed in the best of my organs and limbs
رمى بنا الثغر كما ترمى الثغر
The absence threw us as absences throw
قلب كفاه من الصبابة أنه
My heart has had enough of youth, for it
يا أكرم الحاضر والبادي
O most generous of those present and absent,
يا صاح لست من الغرام بصاح
O friend, I am not one to complain of love’s anguish,
لبيك تلبية الحجيج إلى الصفا
I respond to the call of the pilgrims to Safa
أبا حسن كدرت ماء صفائي
Abu Hasan you have troubled my serenity
ما كنت آلف منزلي إلا به
I was not accustomed to my home except with him,
فقت الملوك مهابة وجلالاً
The kings have lost their awe and glory,
أما المكين المرتضى فعله
The chosen machinist, his deed
راخ لها في حلق البرين
She wanders lost in the desert's throat
إن قصر الشكر فهب عذرا
If my gratitude falls short, forgive me,

لو أمكنتني في مدحي لك الشهب
If I were able in my praise of you to liken you to stars,
بهرت مناقب مجدك الأوهاما

Tell the fortunate son of the exalted one,
قل للمنية شوى
Tell death that its arrow went astray
يا أعور العين قل لي
O one-eyed of the eye, tell me,
تهن بأعياد غدا بك فخرها
Its days rejoice tomorrow in your pride,
إذا ما لقيت الأكرم الندب فاعتذر
When you meet the Generous, apologize
قل لمن يرتجي طنين الرباب
Tell those who await the melody of the rebec
قلت وما قصدي رياء بما
I speak not out of vanity for what

Tell the honored man of titles
يا مالكاً صرف الزمان عبده
O owner of time who makes a servant of it
أصنيعة الطهر الإمام
O Imam of purity and virtue
أصبح عبد الحضرة العالية
The slave of the High Presence has become
إن السعادة قد أظل زمانها
شأن الغرام أجل أن يلحاني
ولاؤك دين في الرقاب ودين
لبس البهاء بسعيك الإسلام
العلم مذ كان محتاج إلى العلم
الناس في بلوى وفي بلبال
أزور القرافة لا عن هوى
قدك مثل الغصن في اعتداله
شغل الزمان بما تقول وتفعل
لكل مقام في علاك مقال
إن حارت الأفكار كيف تقول
لا تحسبن أني هجو
إن قلت قد خرست خلاخل ساقها

ولي تحت دار الملك يومان لم تلح
صفو الحياة وإن طال المدى كدر
أفي كل يوم أنت باعث همة
يا دار عليك سعد المشتري
صفا كدر الشريعة واستقرا
إن كنت أزمعت على المسير

هنئت مفتتح الصيام السافر
أراجعة لي عيشة الزمن النضر
لك المعجزات الخمس لم يفتخر بها
ألا أيها الناسي قديم مودة
قل لأبي النجم الذي منه
دانت لأمرك طاعة الأقدار
وفى لك حد الجد والسيف غادر
يا ظبية الرمل التي
يا من تظل له الكواكب حسدا
نطقت عنك ألسن الأغماد
ألا إن حد السيف لم يبق خاطراً
يا رب هيئ لنا من أمرنا رشداً
أسفي على زمن الإمام العاضد
والخادم المملوك ينهي إلى
شوقي إليك على التبا
يا محباً من النجوم الزبانا
أترى يكون الخلاص لي قريب
قدومك أفرح قلب الهدى
لما رأيت عراص القصر خالية
يا رب إني أرى مصراً قد انتبهت
يا من بليغ المعاني من عبارته
أأرجو بقاء أم صفاء حياة
قفا فلعل الفيض من عبراته
إذا لم يسألك الزمان فحارب
تغدو مهابته حجاباً دونه
ما كل سجع بمعدود من الخطب
أعرب إذا ما الخطب لم يعرب
أوجبت في ذمة الأشعار والخطب
لو كان ينفع أن تجود بمائها
جاوز بمجدك أنجم الجوزاء
