1. A dove awakened me at dawn
With her singing on the branches

2. She cried out to me as my tears
Flowed red on my cheek like coral

3. She increased my sorrows with her wailing
And grief for my griefs afflicted me

4. I said "Why this singing?" She said "My companion
Doubts me because of frivolous talk"

5. I said "If you have lost a companion
Then I have lost a dazzling gazelle"

6. The charm of her glancing eyes in her cheeks
A rose among narcissi of Nu'man

7. Perfect in chastity, faith, pride
And beauty shining over meadows

8. Her origin is good and her branch blessed
Leafy, verdant are her boughs

9. And I have lost enjoyment and passion
Moans of flames and fire

10. When nights confided in me about her
And shot me from their bending bow

11. After her the abodes became
A haunt of wolves and ravens

12. After my covenant with her, intimate friend
Death deceived her with enmity

13. The days betrayed us after gathering
Scattering our company from homelands

14. So the young cry with grieving hearts
And elders moan with groans

15. Some of us fate has taken
And others will follow

16. And death urges us on with spears
Oh my heart, for what the Guide of Death confided

17. And they carried her bier to her grave
Lowering her into dust against my will

18. Then she was held captive in shrouds
They hid her person so my sanity departed

19. And my splendor, love, and heavens
And I wished I could ransom her remains

20. With the blackness of my eyelids
I left her in disappointment and despair

21. With a blaze rushing like snakes
My intimacy with her was of old

22. I would prevail over eras with it
She left me alone enduring my sorrows

23. Wailing songs and melodies
And spending my life in false hopes

24. What my tongue cannot express
Peace be upon you whenever a bird sings

25. In a tree branch at dawn
May God grant you eternal bliss

26. With the youths in lasting paradise
Dwelling in gardens with the Prophet
