1. This is the supplication of a slave worn down by envy
Of the affliction which has overwhelmed him at nightfall

2. Sleep does not visit his anxious eyes
And the eyes of death lie in wait for him

3. Whenever the door knocks, I say it is Death knocking
And the planter of life will reap me however he wills

4. My night of worries is a night without dawn
As if in it I were a blind man who has lost his guide

5. I waver between despair and hope
Its ebb and flow raging within me

6. For your mercy distances his fear
While your benevolence draws near his hope

7. As for hope, I have prepared its ship
To sail to a King whose visitor is never disappointed

8. Al-Kamil ibn Abi al-Fat'h, in whom
The Caliphate found refuge when his father passed

9. Far be it from your perfection to diminish
The full moon is recognized by its increase, not its waning

10. Search and you will find in me a supporter among those
Whose zeal matches yours, for none can match you

11. I have no good excuse for myself
I who have strayed from my purpose am the sinner

12. I distanced myself from you, a mistake and a slip
So forgive - a sin I shall not repeat

13. Misfortunate am I! Is there any gracious feeling
That could bring joy to my grandfather or aid him?

14. I am not hardened to what has afflicted me
So have mercy! Even solid rock will melt from sorrow's heat

15. I am seventy years old, my eyesight fading
On the verge of death, my foundations unstable

16. I am needy - is there any kindness or satisfaction
That would generously aid and requite me?

17. My Master, preserve my soul for perhaps
My devotion and service will please you

18. This weak servant will not cease his striving
Until he prepares your feast of knowledge

19. If you save me from afflictions, my devotion
Will be among the customs of every anguished soul

20. If I fall short in praising and thanking Your blessings
God will thank and praise Himself on my behalf
