1. My treatment did not cure the sick one,
But rather increased illness during hardship.
١. داويت ما نفع العليل دوائي
بل زاد سقماً في خلال ضناء
2. And I despaired of the doctor curing his disease,
So my heart was afflicted with the illness of despair.
٢. وأيست من برء الطبيب لدائه
فاعتل قلبي للأياس بداء
3. I hoped for his health from his sickness,
But my hope was the opposite of my wish.
٣. أملت فيه صحة من سقمه
فحصلت في أملي بعكس رجائي
4. And I wished I could be his sacrifice,
But my hope was foiled so I was his sacrifice.
٤. ورجوت أني قد أكون فداءه
عورضت في أملي فكان فدائي
5. And I wished I was buried in his grave,
In his place while he was in my home.
٥. ووددت لو كنت الدفين بقبره
عوضاً له ويكون في دنائي
6. After his departure, I was deprived of the pleasure of sleep,
It avoided my eyes so I lost sleep.
٦. حرمت طيب النوم بعد فراقه
عن ناظري فسلا عن الإغفاء
7. And indeed I refused while in my heart was an ember,
Its flames kindled by my sides.
٧. ولقد أبيت وفي فؤادي جمرة
ولهيبها متوقد بجوائي
8. And my heart was filled with its burning so,
My sighs came with the panting breath.
٨. وذبالة أضحى بقلبي لذعها
زفراته بتنفس الصعداء
9. One who lost a cub, death hastened him,
It did not linger to let him stay.
٩. من فقد شبل عاجلته منية
ما كان فيها مهلة لبقاء
10. Nothing came to him faster than his fate,
And his departure from me into the wilderness.
١٠. ما كان أسرع ما أتاه حمامه
ورحيله عني إلى الصحراء
11. He only lived seven years of his life,
And went to the abode of destruction for the test.
١١. ما عاش إلا سبعة من عمره
ونأى إلى دار البلى لبلاء
12. Then he rode the steed of death seeking,
A mound tied to a barren boulder.
١٢. ثم امتطى ثبج المنايا طالباً
جدثاً يناط بصخرة صماء
13. He took refuge in a coffin and the loneliness of a residence,
And shrouds, deaf, rigid, and bleak.
١٣. يأوي إلى لحد ووحشة منزل
وجنادل صم وصلد وصفاء
14. And he chose his dwelling in the burial ground distracted,
From a life that is no cure for survival.
١٤. واختار سكناه القرافة ذاهلاً
عن عيشة ليست بداء بقاء
15. I, for Ishmael, am not consoled,
But I have lost my patience and solace.
١٥. إني على إسماعيل لا أعطى عزى
بل قد عدمت تجلدي وعزائي
16. His separation and distance have saddened me
And his immense tragedy has distressed me.
١٦. وأوحشني لفراقه وبعاده
وأفجعني بمصيبة غبراء
17. I was hoarding him for every disaster,
And protecting him in good and bad times.
١٧. قد كنت أذخره لكل ملمة
وأقيه في البأساء والضراء
18. But death has snatched him from me,
So it has aimed the bow of death into my heart.
١٨. فاغتالني فيه الحمام ففوقت
قوس المنايا سهمها بحشائي
19. It left my heart riddled with its wounds,
Drenched in my tears and my blood.
١٩. تركت فؤادي مثخناً بجراحه
متضرجاً بمدامعي ودمائي
20. I make the waters flow over my heart hoping
It will cool my burning thirst and craving.
٢٠. أجري المياه على فؤادي طمعة
في أن يبرد غلتي وظمائي
21. But if I cool its fire it rages,
So I am astonished by a fire stoked by water.
٢١. فتهيج لي نار إذا بردتها
فعجبت من نار تهيج بماء
22. Restlessly I stayed up all night wakeful,
As if I was thrown upon hot sands.
٢٢. قلقاً أبيت على فراشي ساهراً
فكأنني ملقى على الرمضاء
23. Yearning I cry for the one who passed by me,
And when I see a boy my affliction rages.
٢٣. متلهفاً أبكي إلى من مر بي
وإذا أرى ولداً يثور بلائي
24. Truly I am astonished by my life after him,
And my pleasure without him in drinking water,
٢٤. إني لأعجب من حياتي بعده
وتلذذي عنه بشرب الماء
25. Or seeing myself smiling and sniffing
The breeze after his departure.
٢٥. أو أن أرى مبتسماً متنسماً
من بعد رحلته نسيم هواء
26. Or that worries of him leave my thoughts
While his image is formed before me.
٢٦. أو أن تغيب همومه عن خاطري
وخياله متمثل بإزائي
27. Had he lived he would have been logical and successful,
And far from the foolishness of youth.
٢٧. لو عاش كان منطقاً وموفقاً
ومنزهاً عن صبوة الأبناء
28. His insight would have guided our minds,
That he would emerge as the best of the best.
٢٨. كانت فراسته تدل عقولنا
أن سوف يخرج أنجب النجباء
29. But not everything sought by the wise,
Is attained through intelligence.
٢٩. لكنه ما كل ما قد رامه
ذو فطنة فيناله بذكاء
30. The lightning bears witness and the thunder,
That it is the mark of every cloud and rain.
٣٠. والبرق يشهد والرواعد أنها
عنوان كل سحابة وطفاء
31. And dawn bears witness that the radiance of its light,
Always indicates the illumination of brilliance.
٣١. والفجر يشهد أن ساطع نوره
أبداً يدل على ضياء ذُكاء
32. The blows of the honed sword have not ceased
To warn you of its edge and flash.
٣٢. ومضارب السيف المهند لم تزل
تنبيك عن حد له ومضاء
33. When they crowded around his deathbed,
I hoped to not remain among the living.
٣٣. أملت ساعة سعيهم بسريره
أن لا أقيم بزمرة الأحياء
34. And I remained depressed, suffering agony,
In a state worse than misfortunes.
٣٤. وبقيت مكتئباً أكابد لوعة
في حالة أسوأ من الأسواء
35. Time was unjust to me in its rulings,
So I was afflicted by it with a life of servitude.
٣٥. جار الزمان علي في أحكامه
فبليت منه بعيشة غلماء
36. My strength and mind were my sight,
So I remained blind without vision.
٣٦. قد كان قوة ناظري بل خاطري
فبقيت صاحب مقلة عمياء
37. For the dead have no loyal father or friend
Who visit him after his death loyally.
٣٧. فالميت ليس له صديق أو أب
صافاه بعد وفاته بوفاء
38. Let not the long life of the living deceive him,
For his fate after it is to perish.
٣٨. لا يغررن الحي طول بقائه
فمصيره من بعده لفناء
39. And one remains long buried in the earth
Until he sees a trace of the remains.
٣٩. ويطول مكث المرء ثاو في الثرى
حتى يرى أثراً من الزيزاء
