1. I speak the truth in what I say, and it gives me strength,
For I have a habit, whenever I speak, not to embellish.

2. I will praise a youth whose virtues flow,
Like praise flows through the body like the soul.

3. The rhymes sway when I mention him,
As softly as the sword's blade and branch sway.

4. My poetry's words, eager for him,
Glisten and drip beauty for Abul Hasan.

5. If I were to extract their meanings, they would not flow
Except with tales of favors he has granted.

6. I gained his praise and love after testing
That left me no good expectations for my contemporaries.

7. And I favored you over them for three things
I came to love praising you as the eye loves kohl:

8. First, your loyalty to the three men in
A time when every entrusted man betrays.

9. Second, your graceful patience on the day of isolation,
Alone with death—if only the day of isolation had not come.

10. Third, your keeping the covenant after death
Which you took to heart in grief each dawn,

11. As if grief and sorrow were your creed
You meet God with in secret and openly.

12. Your tears never stop, unable to match
What is owed—you fulfilled duty and tradition.

13. So face the future spans with what
Helps you forget the pain of the past.

14. And trail the train of your robe’s excess bounty
You stripped it of surplus that bore no seeds.

15. It kept providing to the resolute and noble
And did not provide to the mean or cowardly.
