1. O slope of Muqattam, how we leaned
On your course, shedding gentle tears

2. I stood on your gravelly riverbed
On my cheeks, embers of lowered lids

3. The lofty towers of my citadels collapsed on you
The tall branches of my trees withered into you

4. And how many loved ones I have in Al Qarafah
A dear one held hostage at Shutoon prison

5. Or his right hand is chained, and I hoped
And wished he would rest his right hand on me

6. He was buried, increased my passion that I
Thanked him for his hidden patience

7. I forgave him in spite of us being
When I left him, I left my faith

8. So my son, my heart, be sure
That your father has been vanquished by certainty

9. Comfort yourself from me, and how can I comfort
When I thirst for the sweet spring?

10. If life humbles itself before you
Then my ruin in you has humbled me

11. As if you, O Muhammad, did not defend
My chest from the adversities of time

12. And did not face calamities after baring me
So your roar would drive them from my lair

13. Nor did you confirm my suspicions that my secret
Is with you, the trust of the trusted

14. I was granted you a year after becoming aware
Yet your years did not distance from mine

15. So whenever eyes glanced upon us
My brother, in every eye or companion

16. And I used to see tenderness as weak resolve
So your separation consoled me with yearning

17. When I lost my side from you with sorrow
Whose embers stirred from hiding

18. When I lost breaths from you, it became a fire
That trails the hidden tears
