1. In praising you, brevity in speech is best
And in long verse meters, there is inadequacy

2. You did well in mentioning the meters when you praised with them
And not all excellence is suited for repetition

3. It was not you I praised, but I praised through you
Poetry, which through you is exalted and proud

4. It reached, through you, a high rank
When your glorious worth and value were attained

5. You gave it abodes and gardens and steps
Beyond them - from the unseen - hopes await

6. You are the one round whom Islam knots its girdle
Sublime, whether good or ill befalls

7. The face of glory continues to turn
Yearning for you, and the eye of glory awaits

8. It adorned itself with days it stored for it
For the precious of things is hoarded

9. Time was dull in color, but in your days
It shone, elucidated, with moons and stars

10. The ranks of kingship are your father’s bodies
While you are their subtle spirit, hearing and sight

11. If the fierce lion of conflict is your father
Then you, treasure of the imams, are its fang and claw

12. Or if the palm tree of glory was well-rooted
You are its flourishing leaves and fruit

13. You taught us, since you did not mix into its course
That roots beget the trees that rise

14. When its worth was raised and it grew beyond
The ability of men to deal with - in awe -

15. He cast to you the keys of sublimity, trusting
In the firmness of your rulings and judgments

16. And he relegated the matter - easing his burden -
To an expert in what comes and what remains

17. A youth mature in wisdom, meeting days
Neither too young, nor advanced in years

18. It is as if his manners, from his excellent nature
Were molded - thus his deeds and forms please

19. Through the resolve of Muhyi al-Din, the kingdom rose
Unmixed, through his father, of bitterness for him

20. Crowned - the world shining at his rising
The sun and moon ashamed when he appears and shines

21. If swords stay at the edges of his frontiers
Adversaries must leave his lands and flee

22. He charged with his army at Bilbays and secured it
After dire caution and apprehension afflicted it

23. And it is no grave danger when the lofty aspire
If guile and jeopardy do not make them weak

24. Before, raids made me attack recklessly
Scorning calamity - great and small

25. You were the sun, and I the dawn preceding it
And dawn, in the sky, appears before the sun

26. With the resolve of an-Nasir ibn as-Salih, the enemies
Fled the Abode of Islam, and scattered in defeat

27. Their arrogant raid pursued them from behind
And victory allotted them naught but rout

28. So they fled hard from him, and since they knew
He marched against them, they scattered away

29. And when you excused hanging back from them
And the secret dawn raid was proven by you

30. And your resolve said, when insistence waned
And no trace of them for you remained

31. "If Abu ‘Amr escapes from it, then your
Escape was a destiny that destiny prevented"

32. You returned to the abode of might with a band
Which would destroy mountains and rain

33. And the swords, in their sheaths, grieve
Almost set ablaze by their fervor

34. An army - when its lines are ordered
You see upon its flanks swords budding

35. They lived and were given life through you among them
Clouds of men and gifts raining

36. You pleased the army of Egypt with spoils and still
The people's pleasure at your door was rare

37. So thank the hand whose benefits make them
Thankful for your allegiance, present and absent

38. It embraced them in dew and forbearance, all
Sustenance is plenty and sins pardoned

39. And if days reveal the page of generosity
The benefactor hides in beneficence and veils

40. Rightful glory is far from hasty deeds
Which the rash and vexed decree

41. And his lofty status and power were distanced
From evil and harm being ascribed to them

42. And through him days have descended
Into the open plain - for it, roses and breasts

43. His mercy overflows, his wrath subsides
And the sea, its sparks quenched in its current

44. A king - if his mirror attains his wants
The full moon rejoices and moons crescent for him

45. No sooner do you mount well-bred horses
Than some people think they are thrones

46. Nor bear the good tidings of the master, rejoicing
Except that it makes the recollection joyous in recollection

47. Nor restrain the dashing script on a day of battle
Except that frontiers wish they were battlefields

48. Nor raise your supreme hand above a pen
Except that provision flows from it or poured blood

49. Nor trace compositions on a sheet
Except that above it stars shine

50. Nor speak, and the group’s knots are arrayed
Except that strands of pearls are scattered about

51. I was certain, when glory was relieved of fatigue
That thought would weary describing you

52. So make your acceptance what I gifted in service
The fairest reward - for it hopes await

53. And I have no lack of need for the dew of a king
Though the richest king, needing his bounty

54. But my tongue, though eloquent, falls short
Of fulfilling the merit - nay, it is too weak

55. In thanking you for your first bounty you gave
Which busied me - what then when more is added?

56. If Iaim a eulogy at your eminence attained
I cannot achieve a proportionate endeavor

57. Though I fall short, despite my efforts to reach
You, I make excuses, ashamed of falling short

58. So forgive, pardon, promise, bestow, be kind
Command, pardon - for you are capable over what you will
