1. A man's greed for life is vanity
And one with high hopes in it is short

2. And a human's life is a borrowed garment
That must be returned by the borrower

3. A man rejoices in delights sometimes
Alas, happiness does not last

4. And he wants clarity from the affection of worldly life
There has always been turmoil in its clarity

5. It has tempted for long, so it betrayed and became mighty
And evil emerged out of its happiness

6. And how often has it deceived those who trusted it
While they were fooled by loving it

7. And how often it came upon the youth
Misfortunes that fate did not foresee

8. The planning of the wise was lost; it did not benefit
The one who commands and manages affairs

9. If only Monday did not smile at me
With its bright face, piercing nights

10. Its sun rose on a gloomy day
Its evil confused the birds in flight

11. And its morning shone from a forehead
That darkened the night above the distressed

12. The glory of the morning shone in the dawn of that day
A dusty, desolate dawn

13. Fate accomplished then what it desired
And time revolved around it

14. An event that calamities witnessed
Seeking refuge from its tyranny

15. The earth trembles when it tells of it
And the sky almost crumbles because of it

16. The earth is enveloped in grief over the calamity of Abu al-Gharat
The stars have disappeared into its abyss

17. The seal of life was broken from you without seeking permission or counsel
You ascended to glory rapidly

18. While the best of us lies under dust
Nothing but His ordained decree befell us

19. Able over us and Powerful
You wasted your life foolishly

20. And you will know the results of wastefulness
The drunk will wake at a time of woe

21. And find the pain of the wine while intoxicated
Tell the turn of fate - in what time

22. Has overcoming it become famously difficult?
And with what incantations have you reached

23. Until the difficult calmed and the defiant yielded?
O savior of mankind, is there a meeting

24. Where anguish and sighing are healed?
O leader of armies, are you aware

25. That the heat of sorrow is upon us, O Prince?
For you left a grave that you filled

26. And an era that you abandoned for the poor
Can the kiss of your soil heal an illness

27. Brought by your loss, the bitter pain?
Eulogies and lineage are useless, and elegy stands

28. Stumbling, for you the stars disappear
If I stay here eulogizing, I am a coward

29. For you know my praise is bold
O father of delegates and guests, bestow favor

30. Upon them without others being commanded
And reward them by veiling your tomb

31. Where the glorious protector settled
Perhaps seeing with their eyes will soothe souls

32. Whose chests are burdened with worries
Being away from you is difficult

33. But thoughts and conscience are with you
You will pass and our new sorrow

34. Will persist after this month, for months and eras
Time should not think you are forgotten

35. Forgetting great calamities is difficult
Patience is good in tribulation, and this

36. Is a tremendous one, with none of us patient
Your absence heated eyes

37. That were cool when you lived
Mourning you made me forget

38. Until faces frowned and hair grew long
Grief for you kept me up at night and slept

39. My eyelids failing in loyalty
Do not think the days you are dead

40. One whose glory is published does not die
You have the pleasure of pilgrims and for the people

41. Who died with you, Munkar and Nakir
The caliphate preserved your covenant faithfully

42. You were rightly suited for it
Your successors did good by us after you

43. So your absence equaled your presence
And God refused to fulfill against it

44. What an envious traitor plotted
They narrowed the pit of scheming but

45. That plotter was strapped by the narrowness
And they plotted against the palaces by fate

46. While the lamp of loyalty in it gives light
Sanctuary and holy month were violated

47. Their covenants and veils torn
Neither fasting deterred them, nor a

48. Pure Imam whose heels are purified
They sullied the covenant of guidance knowingly

49. And with certainty that the Imam would punish
And if the shepherds of the deserts

50. Were held by the bridle, what would the palaces say?
The worshipping Imam grew angry until

51. Mountain rocks almost melted from his wrath
He took vengeance on those who opposed him firmly

52. Never wearying in his vigor
The proof of God was made upright by his victory and guidance

53. And the bitter struggle continued
When one guardian leaves this guardian succeeds him

54. One minister dies and this minister replaces him
An era of righteousness succeeded by

55. An era of justice that does not tyrannize
It proclaimed his remembrance and revived its glory

56. Thus, thus is the resurrection
If his eyes saw your deeds, they would be content

57. And settle calmly in their sockets
All the good you do

58. Is eternally recorded and preserved
Noble honor and lofty glory

59. Where beginning and end are equal
Fate succeeded its woes with bliss

60. How much sorrow produces joy!
We did not complain of the strikes of fate

61. Until it was said: “Your breaker is compelled”
The supreme supporter gave victory to supporters

62. What an excellent Lord, and what an excellent supporter!
A king he long desired - crown

63. and diadem, pulpit and throne
If the hand were empty before him, in awe

64. A reverent hand would long for him
We never doubted, for in speculations is certainty

65. That authority in the world would come to him
The treasure of the imams was not called

66. Except that he is their treasured, hoarded treasure
The ministry never visited his door

67. Except that he had the caravans before it
He never held the position of regent

68. Except that the nights gestured toward him
He did not desire to preside except that there appeared

69. A resplendent kingdom and great kingdom
The reverent hand shone from him with the light of a face

70. At which eyes turn away overwhelmed
He is the sun of guidance and his noble sons

71. Are like stars encircling it
They are the right hand against enemies when they charge

72. While he is the axis around which their steeds rotate
They rode the lofty horses with ascent

73. With no limits to their ascent
The lions that the stubborn resisted

74. And refugees the oceans cried out to
They calmed wild hearts though

75. The furnace of evil and affliction raged
They made the necks yield until

76. Leaving them in awe, humbled
They strengthened the kingdom in the enemies' eyes

77. With men girded by men
Every eye was blinded to their perfection

78. What eye can harm while blind?
They carried their kingdom and protected their allies

79. So they are above it like wrist and wall
A household - if you seek their advice

80. They are the heart and people are the husks
I never equated them though my praise

81. Derives excellence from them
The radiant one who ransoms them leads them

82. Whether their elders or young
The just - the nights' changes swore

83. They do not change in his era
He governed the world's affairs with resolve and determination

84. Needless of advisors' talk
Independent, bearing alone what heavy woes

85. Make even mountains bow down
Willingly and unwillingly, souls accepted him

86. And affairs were settled by his hand
His bravery and generosity conquered benefaction

87. Dew is the brother and ally of his munificence
Examine the history of kings where

88. Tales of generosity about them are recorded
And look at it to learn the superiority of a reign

89. With no peer amongst people of the age
Egypt through his justice and aid

90. Is a good land and gracious Lord
Let no ignorant versifier say

91. The discerning critic with hearing and sight is gone
For Al-Marjī hoped in Abū Shujā`

92. Expert in their metrics, expert
I feared the caller would say

93. "O guest, the water skins are empty"
But he began addressing me kindly

94. "You have a place in it, O dear friend"
Then the hand that when jealous

95. Envied me extended
It ruled heart and tongue - this

96. Hidden in his love, and this grateful
