١. حسبت الدهر في ولدي
يساعدني ويسعدني

From illnesses and tribulations
٢. أو الأيام تنعشه
من الأسقام والمحن
3. And that death would give him respite
And be gentle with me and have mercy on me
٣. وأن الموت يمهله
ويحنو لي ويرحمني
4. But time betrayed me
And days refused to comfort me
٤. فخان الدهر والأيا
م أبت للأنس يرفقني
5. And my hope in my dream was shattered
In my son and in my time
٥. وخاب رجاي في أملي
وفي ولدي وفي زمني
6. I will cry as much as I can
For my son who used to be intimate with me
٦. سأبكي ما استطعت على
بني كان يألفني
7. And I was with him and I was for him
An example of the soul in the body
٧. وكنت به وكنت له
مثال الروح في البدن
8. So he became a neighbor of eternity
Captive of the grave and shroud
٨. فصار جاور الديما
س رهن اللحد والكفن
9. And my heart was for him
A place other than this dwelling
٩. وقد كان الفؤاد له
محلاً دون ذا السكن
10. And time with its vengeance
Separated us seeking me
١٠. وفرق شملنا زمن
بثأر العيش يطلبني
11. So how much does my time oppose me
And disgrace me and make me childless
١١. فكم دهري يعاندني
ويفضحني ويثكلني
12. Oh my woe, oh my war
Oh my worry, oh my grief
١٢. فيا ويلي ويا حربي
ويا همي ويا حزني
13. It moves on, then leaves me behind
And the fire of longing disturbs me
١٣. ترحل ثم خلفني
ونار الشوق تقلقني
14. Since he left early and parted from me
I have not enjoyed life
١٤. فمنذ غدا وفارقني
فلم ألتذ بالوسن
15. I cannot forget his fingers
And his palms that shook my hand
١٥. فما أنسى أنامله
وكفاه تصافحني
16. And he intended for me with his death
And came close to me to bid me farewell
١٦. ويرنو لي بمقتله
ويدنو لي يودعني
17. And the doves mourned him
Like the singing of the nightingale for the branch
١٧. وقد جد الحمام به
كجد السير بالظعن
18. Whenever I imagine an image of him
That comes to me
١٨. أكاد إذا تخيل لي
خيال منه يطرقني
19. I tilt and do not awake to one
Who talks to me and deters me
١٩. أحن ولا أفيق لمن
يحدثني ويردعني
20. I feel embers scorching my heart
Burning it and delighting my eye
٢٠. أحس لمهجتي شرراً
يكويها ويلذ عني
21. If only my mouth when it smiled
At him, my teeth would leave me
٢١. فليت فمي إذا ضحكت
به سني يفارقني
22. If only when my eyes saw
A child, they would not gaze at me
٢٢. وليت إذا رأت عينا
ي طفلاً لا تساقبني
23. And tears would flow down my cheek
For I did not see him and he did not see me
٢٣. وفي خدي تسيل عمى
فلم أرها ولم ترني
24. And if only when my ear understood
A conversation, it would not accompany me
٢٤. وليت إذا وعت أذني
حديثاً لا يصاحبني
25. And if only death hastened me
And if only time destroyed me
٢٥. وليت الموت عاجلني
وليت الدهر أهلكني
26. And I did not see him in the highlands
Traveling away from the homeland
٢٦. ولم أره على ألأعوا
د مرتحلاً عن الوطن
27. My worries have severed my body
And my molars and melted me
٢٧. فهمي قد برى جسدي
وأضناني وأنحلني
28. To Ishmael my longing transcends
The passage of time
٢٨. إلى إسماعيل أشواقي
تزيد على مدى الزمن
29. And Ishmael preoccupies me
From pleasures occupying me
٢٩. وإسماعيل لي شغل
عن اللذات يشغلني
30. And I will not distract myself from Ishmael
Until death splits me
٣٠. وإسماعيل لا أسلوه
حتى الموت يصدعني
31. I will cry for him and lament him
With abundant anguish
٣١. سأبكيه وأندبه
بنوح زائد الشجن
32. As Al-Qamariya grieved
In Baghdad for the branch
٣٢. كما قمرية ناحت
ببغداد على غصن
33. And after him I will remain forever
Sorrowful throughout the days and time
٣٣. وأبقى بعده أسفاً
