حي الديار ديار جلق واستزِد
The homelands, homelands of love and yearning
عذراء عبرية قد زانها شرف
A Hebrew virgin graced with honor
إذا شب الصغير وفيه شر
If the youth grows mischievous
تقول البكر مريم في علاها
Miriam the Virgin in her sublime says
إذا أطراك إنسان بمدحٍ
If someone praises you,
يا صاح إسمع مذ سمت
O friend, listen since you heard
ولقد ذكرتك يا وداعة عندما
I remembered you, oh tenderness, when
أيا أغنياء الروح صونوا كنوزَكم
O you who are spiritually wealthy preserve your treasures
هبطت إليك من المحل الأرفع
You descended to me from the highest abode
خليلي مرا بي على ربع ناسك
My friend passed me in the monastery
بيني وبين المبدعين مرامي
Between me and the innovators there are darting glances
ذلت لعزة دينك الأديان
Religions were humiliated for the glory of your religion,
أولى مسيري ذا الأمان
The start of my journey, this safe haven
يا أيها الأب المكرم التقي
O honored and pious father,
أمانا لقلب طال فيه اعتناؤه
Safety to a heart where care for it grew long
بزغت في بروجها الأضواء
The lights dawned in its mansions
أدركت شأوك فاتق الأسواء
You have attained your goal, so beware misfortune,
بشراك بشراك قد أدناكم النائي
Rejoice, rejoice, the distant one has brought you near
عج بالحمى يا راكب الوجناء
Rouse thy steed worn with travel, rider,
مولى سيختار بكرا أن تكون له
A Chosen Master Shall Make of You
سمعت بأذني رنة السهمِ في قلبي
I heard with my ears the melody of the arrow in my heart
وسوف تأتيك بكر ذا معظمة
A mighty dawn will come to you
رويدا رويدا يا حداة الركائبِ
Slowly, slowly, O swift ships,
سر عجيب فيه معنى أعجب
A wondrous secret it holds a wondrous meaning
إن شئت تبلغ مأربا
If you wish to reach a goal
تدعو محبيها بصوت أمانة
She calls her lovers with a voice of sincerity
يا مسكن الله العلي وعرشه
O dweller of God's sublime abode
حليف بلوى شكا جورا فقلت له
An ally complained of injustice, so I said:
أزل يا شقيق الروح مني بقيتي
O soulmate of my soul that remains in me,
أحن إلى الوادي المقدس رغبة
I yearn for the sacred valley with desire
حتام يا راهبا سكران مشتغلا
Roaming drunkard, obsessed
قد مجد الله مريم أمه شرفا
God has glorified Mary, His mother
قف بي خليلي واستمح
Stand with me, my friend, and ask
أماتت مريم الشهوات عنها
Mary killed her passions within her
ما بين جفني والأحبة برزخ
Between my eyelids and my loved ones is a barzakh
ذريني فجدي حيثما كنت مرشدي
Let me be wherever you are, my guide
كف العتاب وكن علي شهيدا
Spare me your reproach, and be my witness
قد صارت اليشبع أرغن ربها
The reed flute is now completely satisfied with its lord
يا حسودا يزيده الخير شرا
O envious one, goodness increases his evil
الله الله أنت السمع والبصر
O Allah, You are the Hearer, the Seer
قفا نبك نفسا طال منها بسورها
Stop weeping, O self, though its fortresses be long,
أيدري الدهر أيم الله أني
Time knows, O God, that I
ذاك الذي يختفي في حضن جارية
The one who disappears in a maiden's embrace
إن الإله قدير في تصرفه
In God's will there's ample scope and space
ألحي قبلا هو القدوس ثم هو
He was once the Most Holy then He is the
يوم انتقال البتول لا شبيه له
The day the Virgin was taken up is unmatched
قلب يوسوس في الصدور ويخنس
A heart whispers deceitfully in the breasts and conceals
أشكو إلى الله من لاح بليت به
I complain to God of a companion I am afflicted with
إلى كم أسوق القلب في حب مريم
To how much do I drive my heart in love of Miriam
رقت البتولة في معارف ربها
The maiden's tenderness in knowing her Lord
إسمع أخي خطاب أم الله ما
Hear, my brother, the speech of the Mother of God
مقام مريم في العياء منفرد
Mary's station in seclusion is peerless
يا غافلا والإثم حل بأرضه
O heedless one, while sin has settled in his land
لا تدينوا لن تدانوا
Judge not, lest ye be judged
إن رقى سلم الفضائل راق
If he climbed the ladder of virtues high
احقد على الشيطان إن كنت راهبا
If you are a monk, hate the devil
من مشرق العين أو من مغرب الدمع
Whether from the radiance of my eyes or from the setting of my tears
لنا الحجر المرموز في الكتب سره
The stone encrypted in books, its secret is ours
لقد ضل من قد حاد عن مورد الكشف
He who has strayed from the spring of revelation has gone astray
سكنت قوافي الهم قلبا ساكنا
The rhymes of sorrow dwelt in a quiet heart
إن أبهى العصور بالإطلاق
The most glorious of eras without a doubt
سر يا عذولي نائيا
Your secret, my distant beloved
كن محسنا تحسم ملامة لائم
Be kind, put blame to rest
لا تشهدن شهادة منقولة
Never bear witness to hearsay,
ثق إنما الأحزان سبك ضيق
Trust that sorrows are but a narrow shackle,
يا غافلا عن نفسه
O heedless of himself
أذكرت مسكا من مديحك صائكا
I remembered a sweet scent of your praise exhaling
دنت العناصر من علائك
The elements descended from your sublimity
قلب يذوب إلى الأطلال والحلل
A heart that melts for the ruins and the meadows
لقد نزل المولى العلي وهو رافل
The Lord Most High descended while exalted
سألتك ربي أن تكمل غايتي
I asked my Lord to fulfill my goal
هذا دم الإبن عن نفسي أقدمه
This is my son's blood that I offer
مفتي الورى بزغت أدلة فضله
Her virtues shine, proofs plain for all to see
يا راهبا قد زاد فينا حكمة
O monk, you have increased in wisdom
أمانة مريم العذراء كانت
The Virgin Mary's integrity prevailed
أتت إلى الهيكل الموسوم من قدم
She came to the temple adorned from of old
أمان وإيمان قويم يدلنا
Faith and true belief reveal to us
أنحلت يا دمع جسمي فارفقن به
My tears have melted my body, so be gentle with it
لجوا حصن البتول ولا تخافوا
Come to the Virgin's fortress, fear naught
أنار الله يومك فاغتنمه
May God light up your day, so take advantage of it
مدح البتول يسرني
Praising the maiden brings me joy
كان السقوط من الصعود
Falling from lofty heights was hard,
حلول حال أفرقنا مجالا
The time of our separation has arrived
ألا يا أيها الخل الوفي
O faithful vinegar
أجد يا راهبا سعيا
I find, O monk, your efforts vain,
سهر صالح ينير العقولا
A good late night vigil illuminates minds
رأيت مريم ملجانا بضيقتِنا
I saw Miriam afflicted in our distress
هنئت يا بيت لحم
O Bethlehem, you are blessed
تبا لمجد باطل
Alas, for an empty glory
عيني لتلك الناحيه
My eyes turn to that region,
جربت كل مهند ذي رونقٍ
I have tried every glossy profession
بموقف مريم العذراء تبكي
With the stance of the Virgin Mary weeping
يحوز كل من الأبرار أجمعهم
Each righteous soul partakes of happiness
إذا كان رب العز أعلاك موضعا
If the Lord of Might has raised you high
فإن تدمن أخي أكلا وشربا
If you persist, my brother, in eating and drinking,
فلا حزم إلا في طروق تجارب
No wisdom but in tested ways,
إن الملائك والأنام جميعهم
The angels and all people,
قدما علوت على الزمان تجملا
My feet once trampled time in their prime
أرى الصبر صبرا عند إثم وإنما
I see patience as patience in sin, yet
هذا سلام والصدور رحاب
This is a greeting, with open hearts,
أذوب إذا رأيت يسوع يوما
I melt when I see Jesus one day
أرى جسمنا يحتاج قوت حياته
I see our body needs the food of its life
ما أزمتي اشتدت لوقر خطيتي
Whenever my troubles grow severe from my sins
محبة المال أشقى ما بليت به
The love of money is the most miserable affliction
ما لي بأوطان أخص صفاتها
I have no special homelands whose traits
حاشاك يا من عشت بكرا في الورى
Far from you, oh he who lived virtuously in this world,
عجيب أنك العذراء حبلى
How strange that you, a virgin, became pregnant
أسلاف سلامكم أم خطاب
Is it a greeting of ancestors, or a speech of censure?
سكنت وما سكنت لذاك عجزا
I settled, but not because I was helpless,
قد ساد إبرهيم في إيمانه
Ibrahim excelled in his faith
أفنظم در ما أره نفيسا
Shall I compose a pearl necklace I see delightful,
كأن دموع النفس في نحرها سلك
As if the tears of the soul were threaded in its throat
ما أحسن الروض في الروابي
How beautiful is the garden in the meadows
دعي يا نفسي لهوا فيك طالح
My soul, leave your vain desires,
أنام وقلبي للبلا متهجد
I sleep while my heart is awake to anguish
خليلي أما هذه فديارهم
My friend, though this be their abode
ذهب الناكث عنا
The slanderer has gone from us
أرى الدهر لا يبقي قديما ومحدثا
I see time spares neither old nor new
ظننت لحبكم حب وفي
I thought your love was faithful and true
أقول لمغرور أتاني مبرهنا
I say to one conceited who came to me arguing
قد أومضت حكمة الإنجيل عن رسل
The wisdom of the Gospel has flashed from the Apostles,
يسر العالم العلوي
The upper world rejoices
مستودع البكر مريم حامل عجبا
Mary's womb, a wonder repository,
أوائل السهد أقصى لذة الوسن
The beginnings of bliss are like the highest pleasure
قد حاز يوحنا الجنين كماله
John the Baptist gained perfection
رعى الله ديرا كنت فيه مسلما
May God watch over the monastery where once I lived as a devout Muslim
سعدت نفوس بالإله الأعظم
The souls rejoiced in the Greatest God
يا روح سيدة الخلائق كلهم
O spirit of the Lady of all creatures
يا من حملت إله العاملين ومن
O you who carried the God of the worlds and from
طغى دهرنا بالشبه مذ ضل أهله
Our age is overwhelmed with falsehood since its people went astray
يا ليتكم
Oh, if only you would
يا هاجي الورد قد أسرفت مفتريا
O slanderer of the rose, you have exceeded, falsely accusing,
ألا جانب المهذار ساء كلامه
Alas, the idle talker's side is evil,
تبرأت العذراء من كل وصمة
The pure virgin is free from every stain
لأعجب شيء ما تجل عزائمه
How strange are the resolves of one whose body is purified,
يا هيكل القدس روح القدس حل به
O sanctuary of holiness, home of the Holy Spirit
هجر الزمان وليس لي من ساتر
Time has abandoned me with no one to shelter me
صعدت إلى العلياء يا خير كاعب
You ascended into the highest, O best worshipper,
نفس لها مع كل ريح مذهب
A soul that flies off with every passing breeze
أيا من يسوس الجسم خوف انهدامه
O you who fear the collapse of the body
كأنما صورة الدنيا بعالمها
The image of this world with all its beings
أراك غني الفضل تنتهر البوسا
I see you reproaching the nightingale
من يكرم الآب يكرم إبنه وكذا
Whoever honors the father honors the son as well
وأحباب لنا جاروا فجاروا
And friends we had, went astray, astray
فإن خضع العقل الوضي لحواسنا
If the humble mind submits to our senses
لم يخلق الله القدير أبر من
The Almighty did not create one more righteous than
من رام حفظ طهارة
Whoever desires to preserve purity
سل أنت ذاتك إن تود حقيقة
Ask yourself truly if you wish
عجبت لمولود وليس له أب
I am amazed by one born without a father
قد ضل من قد حاد عن كشف الزلل
He who strayed from revealing flaws has strayed
وشاحك فخر في الأنام جليل
Your veil is pride among people, glorious,
سبيل الراهب الراجي برب
The way of the monk hoping in the Lord
لو كان للأفلاك نطق أو فم
If the heavens could speak or have a mouth
إلى الله أشكو شر نفس أثيمة
I complain to Allah of an evil, sinful soul
نفس غدت قد عصاك أسهلها
A soul that has become disobedient,
إذا تديرت ديرا تحت رهبنة
If you join a monastery under some pretense
قل للحبيب الذي عزت محبته
Tell the beloved whose love was dear to me,
توق يا راهبا خبثا تضاعفه
Refrain, O wicked monk, from doubling
إذا المرء لم تدنس من الإثم نفسه
If a man's soul is not stained by sin
يا من لها في الإحتشام منازل
O she who has lofty mansions of modesty
يا ذائبا من وجده
O you who found the wolf
إن العواقب أربع إن جئتها
The consequences are four, if you recall them,
حاشاكم من وصمة تزري بكم
You are far from any blemish that would dishonor you
بمرجلين صادفنا فعالا
With two shovels we met a man of action
إلام إلام ظلما يا حسود
Why, why the wrongdoing, O envious one?
علوت جميع الخلق يا خير كاعب
You transcend all creation, O best of worshippers,
محبة فضة في الناس كانت
Silver love amongst the people was
قد ضل من لم يرض في إيمانه
He who is not satisfied with his faith
صار الإله بحبه متأنسا
God became intimate through His love
أهل الفنى يتمسكون حقيقة
The people of luxury cling truly
قلبي بمدحك يربأ
My heart heals with praise of you
رب الورى في عرشه
The Lord of all creation on His throne sublime,
يا قلب طِر من وكنة الأحشاء
O my heart, soar from the depths of my being
أحاول في عمري من الدهر راحة
I try in my life some respite to gain
قم بنا يا أخا المودة صبحا
Rise with me, O brother of affection, in the morning,
عقلي يحدثه لسان نائح
My mind is addressed by a lamenting tongue
ما كل من يهوى الصلاح موفق
Not everyone who desires righteousness will succeed
يا من تجلى علينا
O you who have shown us
ولي حظ من الدنيا شقي
My share of this life is miserable,
هنيت بابن قد أتاك مباركا
You are blessed with a son who comes to you auspiciously,
لله يوم في الرياض قطعته
God has a day in the meadows I spent
ربي بنى كالوحيد القرن مسكنه
My Lord built his dwelling like the lonely unicorn
إذا ما رأينا آدما وفعاله
When we saw Adam and his deeds
خف أيها الإنسان ذو الإيمان
Tread lightly, O man of faith,
لا تطع طبعك ذا في
Do not obey your nature in
سهل عليك قبول طارق شهوة
It is easy for you to accept an ardent suitor
حواسك يا بتولة مرتضيه
Your senses, o chaste maiden, are devoted
مذ حل روح الله قلبك ساكنا
Since the Spirit of God dwelt in your heart,
ليس للرهبان عيد
The monks have no holiday
كللت بالمجد بكر قد غدت
A maiden crowned with glory rose
الذكر يحدث أشباحا مخيلة
Remembrance conjures fanciful phantasms
يا مريم البكر منك الغوث أطلبه
O chaste Mary, I seek help from you
قل ويك بيلاطوس الباغي بفعلته
Say to the unjust Pilate for his deed
يا لها فرحة بها العقل يسمو
Oh, what joy fills the mind and makes it soar
هاك سمعان وارم بالإنقباض
You have come Simon in contracted retreat
قالت لنا أم الإله وفضلها
The Mother of God said to us, her grace
رأيت منافقا يحمي خبيثا
I saw a hypocrite protecting a wicked man,
جاء المشيب وقد لاحت بيارقه
Old age has come and raised its flags,
إلام تصر إثما يا حقود
Why do you persist in sin, O spiteful one
أيا أم المخلص لن تزالي
O Mother of the Savior, you will remain
حزت الرئاسة في الآفاق قاطبة
You have attained supreme leadership everywhere,
الله شمس يرى في الكون منبجسا
God is a sun seen shining throughout the universe
سقياك سقياك ربعا ظل مبتهجا
I quenched your thirst with a cup, you remained joyful
تذكر الموت موت فاستعد له
Remember death, prepare for it
يهون علينا مس نارٍ ذكية
The sting of a piercing fire is slight for us,
إن الذي ترك الثراء الأفخرا
He who abandoned wealth, however grand,
أدعو بمريم في ضري فتنقذني
I call upon Maryam in my anguish, so she saves me
لك الله من علم إلى الحق رافع
To you, God has raised knowledge to the truth
من لي بقلب أستميحه
Who can lend me a heart to which I profess
نزه فؤادك عن حب الجمال به
Purify your heart from loving beauty through him
سر الإله بيوسف أن يكون له
God was pleased for Joseph to have
نجوت يا مريم العذراء من نفق
O Mary, the Virgin, you have emerged from the tunnel of desires
الله ألله حق صادق أبدا
God, God is ever true
حبيب لنا بين الرموز يناقش
A beloved of ours debates amidst symbols
قليبي من لويلات الفكير
My heart is a bird imprisoned in thoughts
إحذر لسانك إن جلست منادما
Guard your tongue if you sit with friends
يا هيكلا قد زانه بين الورى
O temple adorned among mankind
ما بال شمسِ ضحانا في منازلها
Why does the bright sun at noon in her dwelling-place
أيا من قد رأى نصبي
O you who sees my affliction
قام الإله وكل ميت رابض
God arose and every dead one settled
من ذا رأى الدهر طفلا فوق منبره
Who has seen Time as a child standing atop his pulpit
من ذا ابن رعد وهو ليس بصاعقه
Who is this son of thunder yet no lightning bolt is he,
يا عين سحي بالدموع رذاذا
O eye, spill tears like a drizzle
شعار المدح من كرم الطبيعه
The motto of praise stems from the generosity of nature,
قد خصص الله مريم عند قدرته
God endowed Mary with a grace from His might
بدمشق أبصرت النموم محيرا
In Damascus I saw the stars perplexed,
يا من سموت إلى العلياء صاعدة
O you who ascended to the heights as the spirit and body of the son ascended
يا من رضيت الذل عني عاريا
O You who were pleased with disgrace for me bare,
عد الدهر حتى انقض كوكبه الدري
Count time until its planet completes its orbit,
لما قبلت البشاره وارتضيت بها
When you received the good tidings and accepted them,
تمازج في قلبي الصبابة والشجو
Youthfulness and passion intermingled in my heart,
قف نبك نفسا عجبها بمماتها
Stop lamenting a soul amazed at its death
عهدي برومية الكبرى وقد أخذت
My covenant with death, the sublimest,
طهارة نفس لا تفيد وتنفع
Purity of soul is of no use or benefit
إن الطبيعة يا أخي لم تعطنا
Nature, my brother, gave us not
تنكب العالم الغرار محترزا
Turn away from the deceitful world with care
إن البتولة مريما قد كللت
Mary the virgin was crowned
ألا إحذر ملاقاة الرزايا
Beware encountering misfortunes,
اليوم تخفق دون أرباب الهدى
Today without the guides of righteousness
اليوم يخفق كل نجم مرجف
Today every fluttering star trembles
يا أم مولود أتى لخلاصنا
O mother of a child who came for our salvation
أمذكري زمن الصبا
My reminder of youth's time,
إني ودينك يا من جاد بالبعث
O you who gave life through the Resurrection,
وارحمتاه لميت في دينه
Have mercy on one dead in his religion
إن كان يوحنا الحبيب المجتبى
If John the beloved chosen one
دع اليهود فلا ينفك خبثهم
Leave the Jews be, their malice does not relent
كأن ألفاظ نمام ينم بنا
As if the words of Namam sprout within us,
إذا رماك الدهر في بلدة
If fate has thrown you in a town
إليك أضرع في مدحٍ خصصتِ به
To you I plead in praise I dedicated
بالعقل قد يحوي الفتى الإحياء
With reason a youth may contain revival
حب الإله وحب العالم اختلفا
Love of God and love of the world are opposed
بعدي عن العالم الغرار ألزمني
Keep me away from the deceitful world
كلفت نفسي جهادا فاستفدت به
I tasked myself with intense effort, through which
الله قد خلق الإنسان مرتسما
God created man in His image
رعى الله بستانا تجلت رياضه
God tended a garden where his meadows shone
يضيء في الشرق نجم كله عجب
A star shines in the east, wondrous sight
خذ خمرة الكذب من هذي وسخرية
Take the chalice of lies from her hand in mockery
أجيدي المدح ناظمتي أجيدي
My hands skilled in praise, my composer
إن الملائك بالطهارة والتقى
The angels shine with purity and devotion
سلوا عني نغول بني الزناء
Ask about me the lewd people's children
عفت نفسي أمانيها
My soul has restrained its desires
رأينا من عهودِكم
We have seen in your covenants
خلعت هياكلها بجرعاء الحمى
She shed her mantle in fever's reckless bout,
أما وأبيك أرماني زماني
My soul that was tempted for so long
تجددي تجددي
Renew yourself, renew yourself
أمكرديج زد فضلا
My longing increased, so please
فديتك قد أسكنت شخصا محيزا
I sacrifice myself for you, you have inhabited a biased person
إن الذي تخشاه أول وهلة
The very thing you dread at first,
يا إلهي النفوس قد غالهنه
Oh my God, their souls have been afflicted
شدتي أعظم شده
My hardship is the greatest hardship
إن تحبسوني وحقكم لن تحبسوا
وما قصرت من حاضن ستر بيتها

طهارة مريم العذراء كانت
أشواق حب الله ما أخمدت
أيلام بشر بالهوى وهو الفتى
سموت يا بتولة في العذارى
نصحتك نصحا قل من شأنه النصح
ها مريم مولودة بعجيبة
دهاني من كلفت به صغيرا
قالت إليك فقلت طرفي أرمد
تنبه دهري من عهود معاهدي
أخ ثقفته في كل فن
لله دهر سار بي متقلبا
أسعد بمن أضحى ذميما مهملا
أفأي عين لا ترف وتدمع
جلا مذ تجلى أعينا فيك تدمع
لا يهمل اللَه إنسانا بتجربة
إذا كانت الأبرار في ذات ربهم
دهرنا قد تزندقا
تأمل مريما والشوق فيها
أحب الله مريم في البرايا
قدك البعاد فهل إليك سبيل
أمسى الغبي من الصلاح عقيما
يا برج داود لا تنفك محدقة
كل شيء تراه عينك نقصا

طوبى لمن قد تاب بعد خطائهِ

شمس تسير مشارقا ومغاربا
يا صاح ما هذي الربا
السيف والحيف في حرب وفي حربِ
هو الدهر إن تأمنه يخدعك صاحبه
أرى الشيطان يرمينا بحرب
هذا التواضع إن أردت مواهبا
شكوت وقلبي من سهام كبائري
عبادة مريم في الأرض كانت
أراد ربك إرسال ابنه فأتى
سموت الأنبيا يا بكر علما
قد ارتفعتِ أيا أُم الإله ضحى
يا فضل للفضل معنى أنت شارحه
علوت قدرا فصرت أما
يسوع أقبل من عرش السماء فقد
يا لحى الله علة التنكيد
تب إنما الأعمار برق خلب
بئس الزمان المرتدي بشرار
وليلة إخالها بلا سحر
إن من صار راهبا
يأتي أخيرا بإجلال وتكرمة
نار تثير على الضلوع وطيسا
قلب يقلبه النوى
رأيت الله حل بكل قلب
ما لي أرى الأعمى يحيص عن الهدى
ها هيكل اسرائيل أشرف منزل
إلهي كن لي حيث عدلك حاكم
يا قلب مريم بابن الله منطبعا
يا ذاكر الموت في قلب يحس به
تكللت يا سلطانة الأرض والسما
ناديت مريم عند كل مصيبة
ما أحسن العقل يجلو فضل سيده
يا صاح هل أبصرت عيناك من أحد
أعانق من فوق الصليب مخلصي
علاك الفضل في طي الجمال
يا راهبا يبغي السلوك على وجل
أخفت بمنظري كلا فأجرى
نرى الأبرار قد سادوا جميعا
بها أسرار إبن الله تمت
اقطع بحزمك غصن الضر مبتكرا

مراتب أهل الفضل خمس تجمعت
ورد الله الرحيم
أقوت عهودهم فأين ذمامي
فقد تقسوا طباع ذوي اللآمه
إن تسل عن روميا قل
طوباك يا جسد العذراء إن له
لا عيب في الورد يذكو عرفه سحرا
عيني تلت ما سطرته يميني
كفاك يا راهبا إن كنت تتوانى
لله قلب تقلبه عوامله
يا نسيما نراه يروي الغليلا
أيا ضابطي شرعِ الكنيسة عنوة
مريم مدينة مولاها معظمة
حقا لقد صعد المسيح موجها
يا أيها الروح المعزي عزني
أيا وامقي ألبكر مريم لا تنوا
لو تفرز الخير من شر ومن شعث
الحزن يظلم أنفسا فيضلها
