1. The motto of praise stems from the generosity of nature,
While the fire of blame stems from the kindling of defamation.
١. شعارُ المدح من كرَمِ الطبيعهْ
ونارُ الذم من حطب الوقيعهْ
2. If you hate and blame without religious law,
A brother protected by the helmet of Sharia.
٢. فإن تُبغضْ تَذُمَّ بغير شرعٍ
أخاً يحميه صمصامُ الشريعهْ
3. Then close your ears to slander and blame,
With God's law, He perfected its making.
٣. فَسَدُّ الأُذنِ عن ثلبٍ وذمٍّ
بشرع اللَه أَحكَمُها صنيعه
4. A person's tongue is a lethal weapon,
Prepared with the evils of transgressions like a trust.
٤. لسان المرء عضبٌ قد أُعِدَّت
بمتنيه الرزايا كالوديعه
5. When you unleash it, you unleash evil,
As if death were in its vanguard.
٥. متى جرَّدته جردت شرّاً
كأن الموت في فيه طليعه
6. So the harbinger of evils is a harmful tongue,
You see its harms broadcasted from it.
٦. فعنوان الشرور لسانُ مؤذٍ
ترى آفاتِه عنه مذيعه
7. You see it paralyzed by the era, so it deafens
A gentle soul with the arrow of its hypocrisy.
٧. تراه الدهر موتوراً فيُصمي
بسهم نفاقه نفساً وديعه
8. Its fame teaches every abomination,
Jew, and its sight is appalling.
٨. فشهرتُه تعلِّمُ كلَّ فحشٍ
يهوديٍّ ورؤيتُه مُريعه
9. Its taste and its sharpness are like a flaming fire,
Its tongue quick like lightning.
٩. مذاقتُه وحدَّتُهُ كنارٍ
مؤجَّجةٍ ولهجتُه سريعه
10. So how many processions of love collapsed,
Which it tore without fearing separation.
١٠. فكم من موكبٍ الحبِّ زاهٍ
يمزِّقُه ولا يخشى القطيعه
11. It made the sweet bitter again after change,
And its vileness distorted the beautiful.
١١. أعاد الحلو مرّاً بعد عكسٍ
ورَدَّ الحسنَ سَحْنَتُهُ شنيعه
12. It almost destroyed kings in every art,
And razed impregnable citadels.
١٢. لقد كاد الملوكَ بكل فنٍّ
ودكَّ عواصماً كانت منيعه
13. If evils were created,
I would say it is the tongue and defamation.
١٣. فلو أن الشرور مكوَّناتٌ
لقلت هي اللسان مع الوقيعه
14. My God protect me from the doom of my speech,
For how many souls have fallen dead from it.
١٤. إلهي وقِّني من حتف نطقي
فكم نفسٍ هوت منه صريعه
