1. O you who sees my affliction
To you I complain of torment
١. أيا من قد رأى نصبي
إليك أشكو من الوصب
2. By a people with whom I was afflicted
Like the affliction of the body with scabies
٢. بقومٍ قد بليت بهم
كبلوى الجسم بالجرب
3. Their wise ones deceive me
So I flee while they chase me
٣. فأعقلهم يخادعني
فأهرب وهو في طلبي
4. And their leader pretends with me
So what can one expect of the guilt
٤. ورأسهمُ ينافقني
فماذا الظن بالذنب
5. I thought their mirage was water
So they destroyed me with yearning
٥. حسبت سرابهم ماءً
فأهلكني من اللَغب
6. For something I did not give them
So do not ask about the reason
٦. لأمرٍ ما أتيتُهمُ
فلا تسأل عن السبب
7. I thought they were of noble origin
I found them to be of evil intention
٧. ظننتهمُ ذوي نسبٍ
وجدتهمُ ذوي نصب
8. So I refused though I was content with what
I was afflicted with of fatigue
٨. فأبتُ وقد رضيتُ بما
بُليتُ به من التعب
9. I was happy and could not believe what
I was saved from of ruin
٩. فرحت ولا أصدق ما
نجوت به من العطب
