1. My eyes turn to that region,
Their glances come in succession,

2. They shed hot tears
In continuous succession from their lids,

3. Thus they remain in yearning
Weeping with a slumbering eye,

4. Yearning for the abode of loved ones
With whom they were once satisfied,

5. And say, from the burning anguish
And the blazing fire within,

6. That the hand of reunion is disobedient,
Or rather, it is the one being defiant,

7. Oh, if only it had been the judge over me,
I lament a time now passed,

8. With brothers in the wilderness,
In that valley where there is no perfect joy,

9. It was as if a paradise for me,
With clusters of fruit close at hand,

10. Souls within it were faithful,
Angels were its protectors,

11. Its branches swayed gently for me,
As if greeting me,

12. The wind conveyed between us,
News like a whispering talebearer,

13. Within it streams flowed,
Not poured by maidens,

14. Its meadows like flowers,
Some angry and some content,

15. If the leaves lamented, the eyes of the clouds appeared weeping,
O valley in which noble virtues thrived,

16. It harbored some pure souls,
Moved by their hymns at dawn,

17. With rhyming verses like chanting singers,
The melody of their prayers delighted it,

18. With the beautiful voice of the singer,
I was among them, my affairs peaceful,

19. But now I miss them, alas, my river turned into a torrent,
Oh what devastation when I left it,

20. Save for the corner of the sanctuary,
I was cast out violently,

21. Breaking the thrower's right arm,
I stood in their ruins,

22. With the hand of purpose turned against me,
Like a pauper asking

23. At the door of the unresponder,
I weep like Joseph when he was

24. Imprisoned by the adulteress,
Oh the anguish of my heart that laments

25. When thrown into the abyss!
I never thought before it

26. That the hidden fears would appear,
The eyes are never satisfied

27. By the talebearers among people,
In being apart from Joseph was what

28. Had happened - so disregard the marginalia!
Woe to a fate whose goods

40. O Owner of sublime wisdom!
Elijah once held them back

41. When the land was dark,
In your loftiness, be exemplary

Name the sky its parallel

43. In a towering loftiness,
You asked me for a need

44. Forgetting all others,
I was in it as if I were

45. Disgrace in a naked garment,
Or as if I were discarded in it

46. Seen in the corner,
Called out for a dirham

47. In Tripoli and the corner,
So I was sold away from my brothers

48. In the vast empty seas,
As if Joseph was sublime

49. In the lands of Egypt,
Far apart though sold alike

50. Like the sale of the maidens,
I'm captive to the margins

51. While he's the prince in power,
Between me and you is a bond

52. In God that remains,
Cease blaming me and just be

53. Not against me nor for me,
It suffices me what has befallen me

54. Of distant forced estrangement,
From the injustice I suffered

The waves toss me about

Until I reached my hermitage

58. Where disasters remain,

59. However it is, that's how it is,
I pray but there is none

60. Who answers my prayers
Except She in whose loftiness

61. All virtues are contained,
Blessed are you, O pure one,

62. Exalted and towering,
You have dazzled the world with a purity

63. From which even angels turn away,
If you were divided among the world

64. They would see God openly,
Fragmented and burnt

65. By a prolonged tribulation,
I am weak before it

66. So be my protection,
If Paul once overcame it

67. How can health come to me?
Succor me, a transgressor, sinner,

68. Unlike pure souls,
For the self appears to you

69. Healthy in its tyranny,
But by your grace find comfort

70. Souls content with you,
From you comes greeting to me

71. And from me, my salutations.
