دمعي وقلبي مطلق وأسير
My tears and heart are free, yet captive,
يا باعثا شعره انتشارا
O you who spread your hair wantonly
أنفقت كنز مدائحي في ثغره
I spent my treasure of praises on his mouth
خذوا قودي من أسير الكلل
Take my firewood from the prisoner of shackles
أهوى قمرا مر بنا مجتازا
I crave a moon that passed by transient
أحب عليا وهو سؤلي وبغيتي
I love Ali, he is my wish and desire
لم أنسه لما أتى مقبلا
I did not forget him when he came to me
أفدي التي برزت كالشمس في الأفق
Roses are red
بلا غيبة للبدر وجهك أجمل
Without absence for the moon your face is more beautiful
رأت شغفي عند ارتشاف رضابها
She saw my passion when sipping her wine
قمر رأيت الكون ضاء ببشره
A moon I saw the universe glow with its good news
أهيف كالبدر يصلي
As radiant as the full moon,
قمر يجلو دجى الغلس
A moon shining through the gloom of nightfall
كأنني واللواحي في محبته
As though I and the meadows in his love
يا قلب صبرا لنار
My heart, have patience for a fire
جلا ثغرا وأطلع لي ثنايا
A mouth unveiled to me its inner folds
رأى رضابا عن تسل
He saw lovers busy with play
بالله يا ذا النفور رق على
By Allah, O estranged one, be kind
لا طل صوب الغوادي ساحتي قطنا
No meadows have I ever grazed in their valleys
ملبسي من هجره ثوب الضنى
My garb from his estrangement is the robe of sorrow
ونحوى له نغم
His melody confounds the mind that would depict it;
تهددني بهجران وبعد
You threaten me with estrangement and distance
لله كفتي أطاع صبابتي
My sufficiency is with Allah, who obeyed my youth
يا من دعوت له غداة دعوته
O you whom I called to when I called him the next morning
وعيون أمرضن جسمي وأض
And eyes that made my body sick and vexed
طالت إليك رسائلي ووسائلي
My messages and means have long reached out to you
لو رمت إبقاء الوداد بحاله
If you wanted to maintain affection as is
كيف يصغي لعاذل أو يميل
How can one who is lovesick listen to a blamer or incline,
يا قمرا رأيته في مأتم
O moon I saw in sorrow's place
ومجتمعين ما اجتمعا لإثم
And though brought together, not for any sin
جدد عهود تواصل وتلاق
Renew the covenants of communion and accord
كتبت ولو أني من الشوق قادر
I wrote, and if I were able from longing
لا تخف ما صنعت بك الأشواق
Do not hide what longing has done to you
قبل المحبوب من قب
Kiss the beloved before
وألثغ زار لكن
And he stuttered, trembled, but
يا ممرض جسمه ويا متلفه
O you who are nursing his body and composing him,
للمنطقيين أشتكي أبدا
I always complain to rationalists
طرف تعرض بعدكم لهجوع
A glance fell upon me after you
قلت وقد أبرزت بنعش
I said, as they carried forth a bier
في الراح سر بالسرور يحصص
In the wind there is a secret joy whispering
ينور الطرف كيسا
The eye lights up a cup
رب طباخ مليح

أوائل حب ما لهن أواخر
Beginnings of love have no endings
منير وجدي به
My heart's secret I hide
رأى المسيحيون منه دمية
The Christians saw in it a doll
لي فود وفؤاد يرتجي
I yearn for the sweet union after separation
أهدى لنا بنفسجا منثوره
He gifted us with scattered violets
له مني المحبة والوداد
My love and affection are his
يا ساكني مهجتي وقلبي
O dwellers of my devastation and heart
وبين الخد والشفتين خال
And between the cheek and lips a mole
علق القلب بسما
My heart is caught by the graceful
من حين جلا العذار في الخد نبات
Since the bloom of down upon the cheek did rise
لما درت أن المحب بغيرها
When she knew that her lover was interested in another
قف بالركائب أو سقها بترتيب
Stand by the remnants, or drive them in order,
صدقتم قده يحكي القضيبا
You spoke true, its leadership tells of glory
فما أنا في الحضور منتهز
In gatherings I seize each moment though
لي من هواك بعيده وقريبه
For me, your love has both distant and near
قلت وقد أقبل في حلة
I said, as he came towards me
تدبيج حسنك يا حبيبي قد غدا
Your beauty's spell, my dear, has come to be
لا تنكروا إحراقه في الهوى
Do not deny that he burns with passion,
يا أيها الصدر الذي وجه العلى
O you, whose face reflects the highest virtue,
يا من بقلبي غرام
O you whom my heart adores
حديث غرامي في هواك قديم
My talk of love for you is old
علق الفؤاد بظبية عجانة
My heart is captivated by a lively gazelle
من لي به رق معنى فيه رونقه
Who will care for a meaning whose elegance in it
العاذل قد عنف في الحب ولام
The critic chided love though blameless it remained
فكم جمع الحسن النفيس من العلى
How much the noble beauty gathered glory,
وافى بوجه قد زهى بالطلعة ال
He came with a face made radiant by the fresh complexion
يا حبذا طيفك من قادم
O how I wish for your image drawing near
يا دهر قد سمح الحبيب بقربه
O Time, the beloved has allowed closeness
من يعطف نحو قلب هذا القاسي
Who will incline towards the heart of this harsh one
فرق بيني وبين مصطبري
He separated me from my companion
أفدى عربا حلوا بوادي الجزع
I ransom Arabs who camped in the valley of grief
إن صد وأضحى للجفا يعتمد
If he is harsh and unkind, relying on disdain,
ومؤذن في حبه
I am enamored, I cannot wait
إني لفي كنف مولى جود راحته
In the care of a generous Lord is my refuge,
ما كنت أندب رامة وطويلعا
I would not lament Ramah or Tawilah
شكوت إلى الحبيبة ما ألاقي
I complained to my beloved about the pain I suffer
لو أن من أحبه
If the one I love
بأبي وما ملكت يدي من سمته
By my father and all I own
مذ سيج الورد منه آس
Since the rose was fenced off from him by grief
يا ذا الذي نام عن جفوني
O you who slept while my eyes were awake
قالوا حبيبك فيه
They said - your beloved there's
أسير لحاظ كيف ينجو من الأسر
A captive of glances, how can he escape the captivity
تحرش الطرف بين الجد واللعب
My eyes roamed between seriousness and playfulness
في الراح والزهر قد رأينا
In the breeze and flowers we saw
فديتك كم علي عليك عذل
I ransom you, though you wrong me, you are not just to lovers,
قالوا غدا يندم من لثمه
They said tomorrow he'll regret his kiss
لهفي على شادن في حسن طلعته
My longing for Shadin in his beauty's prime
أحبابنا أين ذاك العهد قد نقضا
Our friends, where is that covenant now broken
كم شمل صبر هجركم فرقه
How much endurance has your estrangement shattered
قلت له لما انثنى وانتشا
I said to him, as he leaned to and fro
الدمع هام والحشا هائم
Tears keep falling, my eyes know no rest
أفي مثل هذا الحسن يعذل مغرم

فضحت جيد الغزال بالجيد
You outshone the gazelle's neck with your neck
بعينيك هذي الفاترات التي تسبي

متى بالقرب يخبرني الرسول
When will the messenger inform me of your nearness
أدام الله أيام الوصال
May God prolong the days of union
بدر عن الوصل في الهوى عدلا
The full moon is equal to union in love
أنا للمجالس والجليس أنيسة
I'm a joy to assemblies and a boon companion,
ترى يا جيرة الشعب
Oh neighbor of the beloved village
تهيم ببدر ثم ترجو له قربا
You yearn for an unattainable moon then hope for its nearness
كفى شرفا أني بحبك أعرف
It's honor enough that through loving you I'm known
يا بأبي معاطف وأعين
O my father! Cloaks and eyes
يا داية في حسنها أرتضي
Oh companion of beauty, I am pleased
فدتك نفوس قد حلا بك حالها
Souls have been sacrificed for you, their state altered by you,
تعد عن الغرام فلست تقوى
You shun passion, but you lack the strength
من كحل المقلة السوداء بالدعج
He who kohl'd the black eyelid with languor
لما رأت عشاقها قد أحدقوا
When her lovers saw her beauty
وحرمة الذاهب من عيشنا
By the sanctity of one gone from our life
اسم حبيبي وما يعاني
The name of my beloved and what he endures
خذ من حديثي ما يغنيك عن نظري
Take from my words what suffices you from my sight
أدور لتقبيل الثنايا ولم أزل

No, not the softness of affectionate coats
يمينا بطيب شباب الزمان
With the prime of youth and the morn of wishes,
الشيخ قالوا قد غدا سالكا
The old man, they said, began to walk
أنتم لعبدكم أحبه
You are to your servant most beloved
لما سمعت بفضل جودكم
When I heard of your abundant generosity,
بعثت إليك ما يجليك ثغرا
I sent to you what makes your cheek glow
أضرم لمن رام وصلا منك أو خطبا
Kindle a fire for one who sought your love or asked for you
بدا وجهه من فوق أسمر قده
His face appeared from above his dark neck
وذي ثنايا لم تدع عاشقا
With folds that left no lover free from blame
لا أجازي حبيب قلبي بظلمه
I do not punish my beloved though he may do me wrong
وكأن سوسنها سبائك فضة
Her lily is like rods of silver
عذارك من ند يجل عن الند
Your blame from an adversity that rises above adversity,
ظبي له في كل قلب هوى
A gazelle with desire in every heart
قلق يحن إلى الأجيرع قلبه
A restless heart yearns for meadows green
غنينا به عن كل لهو ولذة
He has made us needless of all vain sport and pleasure,
يا ثغره المحمي منه بنابل
O mouth that burns me with its fangs,
قامت حروب الزهر ما
The wars of flowers erupted not
أسرع وسر طالب المعالي
Hasten, you who seek the heights, through every valley
مثل الغزال نظرة ولفتة
Like a gazelle with glance and turn
لب العاني بصده بلبله
The lover's grief confounded him,
كم قلت مغالطا لكي أسأله
How often I deceive myself to ask of him,
ومقرىء طيب الألحان هيج في
A sweet-voiced reciter kindled in my heart
أنا كاس في كيس
I'm a cup in a bag
أمل سعيت أجد في إتمامه
A hope for which I strove to complete
لا تطلبن القوت من معشر
Do not seek sustenance from a people
قولوا لرسامكم
Tell your painter,
لما حكم الزمان بالتفريق
When fate decreed we must part
عفا الله عن قوم عفا الصبر منهم
May Allah forgive a people whose patience ran out from them
ما ذاب سقاما في الهوى لولاكم
No sickness would melt in passion were it not for you
أراك تشم الخل في زمن الوبا
I see you sniffing vinegar in the time of plague,
خيالي أخاف الهجر منه
My imagination, I fear separation from it
قلت للائم في الدم
I said to the one blaming me for shedding tears
يا غصن نقا يميس في الأوراق
O branch, soft whispering in the leaves,
أأطلب يا محمد أن يؤولا
Shall I seek, O Muhammad, that another
كان ما كان وزالا
What was, was, and passed away
يا مالك رق الصب بالله عليك
O guardian, the young man is distressed, for God's sake
بمهجتي سلطان حسن غدا
With my madness I gained a sultan's beauty at dawn
بلا غيبة للبدر وجهك أجمل
Without the moon's absence, your face is the most beautiful
مليح كأن الحسن أصبح حاديا
So fair, as though beauty itself roams
ولقد كتبت إليك لما جد بي
Indeed I wrote to you when my passion grew intense,
المغرم من ذكراكم يقلقه
The lovelorn is restless when remembering you
لم تجرح السكين كف معذبي
The torturer's knife did not wound my palm
لا عذر للصب إن لم يألف التلفا
The youth is not excused if he fails to become accustomed to separation,
قولوا لمن صد ومن حظنا
Tell those who turned away and denied our love -
شكوت إلى ذاك الجمال صبابة
I complained to that beauty of youthfulness
يا من لهم علي وحدي فرض
O you who have a right upon lonely me
لما عتبت فلانا حين وليته كذا
When I chided so-and-so as I turned away
أسكرني باللفظ والمقلة ال
Your words and glance intoxicated me
هل جابر جائر بالوصل لم يجد
Is there a tyrannical unifier who found no consolation in union?
يا من بفؤادي نار وجدي غادر
Oh my desire, your beauty left my heart on fire
سلوي عن هواكم لا يجوز
Ask me not to change my love, for some loves fully capture the heart
يا غصن نقا عليه طائر
O branch with a singing bird upon it
كلفت بحب مستوفي
I was charged with loving one who is unattainable
عابوا من المحبوب حمرة شعره
They rebuked the beloved for the redness of his hair,
لما حدا بالأيمنين يسار
When the right-hand tribe advanced leftwards,
بحقك لا تهجر فهجرك قاتل
By Your right abandon me not, for Your abandonment is death
أما ولآل من شتيت ابتسامه
For the tears shed from his scattered smile,
متى يعطف الجاني وتقضى وعوده
When will the offender show mercy, and fulfill his promises?
دب نمل العذار في الخد يبغي
The ants of passion crawl on my cheek
كساه ثوب الجمال حسن
Beauty has clothed him in a robe of charm
يا ناتفا شعرات عا
O one who weaves strands of passion
شدا حالي ليطربهم
He feigned joy to please them
أحلى من الشهد من هويت وكم
Sweeter than honey is the one I love
عذابي من ثناياك العذاب
My torment from your folds of torment
يا ذا الذي صد عن محب
O you who has estranged a lover
حباك الجمال وأوفى النصيبا
Beauty has gifted you, fulfilling your share
هجرت فتى أدنى الأنام محبة
You abandoned one who loved you more than all people
أيجمل سلواني إذا هجر الحب

O Seal of the noble messengers, through whom
يا راقدا لم يدر عمر الدجى
O you who sleep unaware of the night's length
لا خلت من سناكم الأحياء
The living were not devoid of your company,
ليت شعري من قد أحل الخياما
I wish I knew who pitched the tents
قد كان ما علم اللاحي وما جهلا
What the critic knew or was ignorant of has come to pass,
أراك الحمى لما شدته السواجع
When yearning gripped him, the fevered lover bent
حموا بكعوب السمر بيض الكواعب
They protected the fair-skinned maidens with reddish heels,
جرحت فؤاد المستهام فداوه
You've wounded the heart of an ardent lover, so heal it,
حتى متى أنا صابر يا هاجر
How long must I be patient, oh departing one
كم يشمت بي في حبك العذال
How much the censurers gloat over my love for you,
قد قلت لما مر بي معرضا
When he passed by me turning away
لا غرو إن هز عطفي نحوك الطرب
No wonder if passion inclines me towards you,
ملامك لا ربط لديه ولا حل
Your blame, it has no connection, no solution
الصب بحبه عليه وله
The lover pours his love on him, for him
ألين فيقسو ثم أرضى فيحقد
He is gentle, then becomes harsh, satisfied, then resentful
لعل أراك الحي ليلا أراكه
Perhaps I will see you alive at night and see you
سلام مشوق مغرم القلب صبه
Greetings of longing from a love-struck heart
ومستتر من سنا وجهه
With a face made youthful by the veil pulled over it
يا من هجر المحب من غير سبب
O you who abandoned your lover for no reason
قام يسعى ليلا بكأس الحميا
He arose to walk at night with a cup of wine,
لا تعتقدوا عذاره الفتان
Believe not that his alluring excuse
وافى وأرواح العذيب نواسم
He came, and the spirits of Udhayb were smiling,
كنا حروفا عاليات لم نقل
We were lofty letters unuttered
لنا صاحب لا يرعوي لفضيلة
We have a friend who cares not for virtue
كيف يلحى على هواك الكئيب
How can I forget your sorrowful love?
مذ رأته الشمس في الحمل
Since the sun saw him in Aries,
يا ذا القمر المنير في الآفاق
O you with the radiant moon-face in the firmament
بتثني قوامك الممشوق
With your swaying figure so slender
هذا الذي أنا قد سمحت لحبه
This one whom I have allowed his love
فغدا كل محب في الهوى
So each lover in passion became
حي غزالا سل من أجفانه
A greeting to the gazelle whose eyelids
وظبي قد سبى عقلي ولبي
A gazelle has captivated my mind and heart
ماست فقيل هي القضيب الأميد
She walked with pride, they said "She is the noble steed"
مولاي كيف انثنى عنك الرسول ولم
My Master, how did the Messenger turn away from you when
أرى نار وجدي أطفأتني ولا تطفى
I see the fire of passion extinguished me, yet it is not extinguished,
العاذل في هواك قد زاد وقال
The lover in passionate love for you has transgressed and said
ولما التقينا للوداع وللجوى
When we met to bid farewell and passion's fire,
وصالك أنهى مطلبي ومرادي
Your union fulfilled my wish and desire
وحق هذي الأعين الساحره
By the truth of these enchanting eyes,
هويت من ريقته قرقف
I fell for one whose saliva is bitter
فيا شعره هل فيك ليلي ينقضي
O night of mine, will you ever end?
ته كيف شئت فللحبيب تدلل
Complain of me however you wish, for to the beloved I make excuses
فيا قاضي القضاة متى يوفي
O Judge of judges, when will tongues, however eloquent,
خافت من الرقباء يوم وداعي
She was afraid of the spies when I bid her farewell,
عريب كان لي معهم عهود
An Arab I was, and bonds with them I shared
كان بعينين فلما طغى
With two eyes he once could see
تبسم زهر اللوز عن در مبسم
The almond blossom smiled, revealing a string of pearls,
لو كنت فينا ولها مغرما
If you were among us, madly in love,
أنعم إلي سريعا
Grant me quickly,
عجبا وطرفك للدماء محلل
Strange that your eyes delight in blood
حتام حظي لديك حرمان
My fate with you is deprivation,
ما شئت من عبء الغرام وحمله
Whatever burden of passion and its load you want,
مولاي إنا في جوارك خمسة
My Master, we are five in your neighborhood
بمن أباحك قتلي
By whose permission have you allowed my murder
دمع تناثر عقده
Tears scattered, their necklace undone,
غدا نافرا يدني الهوى وهو شاحط
Tomorrow he departs, bringing love near while he is downcast,
قال الحبيب معاتبا لي في الهوى
My beloved reproached me in love's name,
خذوا خبرا عن نظم دمعي ونثره
Hear the tale of the rhythm of my tears and prose,
ما ناح حمام الأيك في الأغصان
The dove does not moan in the branches,
واطول شوقاه إلى غائب
His longing for an absent one
أتراه لما جار في أخلاقه
Did he know, when he was unfaithful in his ways,
خليلي هل من حلمل لي تحية
My beloved, is there any messenger for me,
بساط يملأ الأبصار نورا
A carpet that fills eyes with light
يا أهل نجد على هوائي
Oh dwellers of Najd, on my passion
يا فاضح البدر حسنا

صدودك هل له أمد قريب

لا أسهر الله طرفا نام عن سهري
I stay up while my Lord is resting,
غنيت بالمحبوب عما يشتهى
I sang of the beloved, ignoring all else desired
رأى الحسن في العشاق ممتثل الأمر
He saw beauty in lovers enacting his command
كتب الجمال بخده نسخا
Beauty wrote with his cheek manuscript copies
غادرني بغدره
He betrayed me with his treachery
قلت وقد أقبل يسعى بها
I said, as he came rushing towards me,
عودي إلى حسن التأتي
Return to your beauty's splendor
ودي لكم سادتي بالبعد ما نقصا
My love for you, my masters, has not waned with distance,
أسرفت في اللوم ولم تقتصر
You were excessive in blaming, and did not limit yourself,
قولوا لزجاجكم ذا الذي
Tell your glassblower, he whose tinted
تمشى بصحن الجامع اليوم شادن
In the mosque's courtyard walked Shadan today
في غزلي من لحظ ذاك الغزال
In my love for that gazelle's glance,
لي من جمالك شاهد وكفيل
For me your beauty's witness and guarantor
يا رب قد علقته
O Lord, I hung it
لحاظ الظبا تحكى الظبي في المضارب
The gazelles recount in the dwellings
للعاشقين بأحكام الغرام رضا
The lovers acquiesce to love's decrees,
يا من إذا وعد الوصال لمغرم
O you who when promising to unite with a lover
أمسى الفؤاد على تلهب جمره
My heart kindled into flame for the one
يا حبذا نهر القصير ومغربا
O how I love the short river and its sunset,
صبا وهزته أيدي شوقه طربا
The morning breeze shook him, stirred by yearning,
ما للحشيشة فضل عند آكلها
The grass has no merit to the one who eats it
من للخلاف وللوفاق مسائلا
For discord and accord, you have issues
من سحر طرفك يا علي
From the magic of your glance, O Ali
قد مال سمعي إلى عذاله فيكا
My hearing has inclined towards those who blame you
لو لم تكن ابنة العنقود في فمه
If the daughter of the grape cluster were not in his mouth,
ومهفهف كالغصن في الميل
Swaying like a bough in the night
يا من أمر الغرام والقلب له
O you whose love and heart are all to me,
بان الخيال وإن أبان نزيلا
The imagination appeared, though it stayed briefly as a guest
ناوليني الكأس في الصبح
Hand me the cup in the morning
وخمري الخدود يريد بعدي
My rosy-cheeked beloved wishes me gone
وأهيف فاق الورد حسنا بوجنة
He excelled the roses in beauty with his cheek
نعم هي الدار من يناديها
Yes, it is the abode, whoever calls it,
يا من ببعاده لقلبي قرضا
O you whose distance has rent my heart with sorrow
إن تبدوا أو تثنوا
Whether you show affection or turn away
أحبابنا إن باح فيكم بالهوى
Our friends, if love awakens in you
من لي به كالبدر في إسفاره
Who is like the full moon in its rising
لم يبق في قلب عاشق رمقا
No life remained in any lover's heart
أأحبابنا إني وإن رمت سلوة
My loved ones, though I have sought solace
أشد الهوى العذري عندي ألذه
The most intense love for me is chaste love
قل لي بعيشك هل على هذا الجفا
Tell me, will hearts or minds endure this estrangement?
حييت يا ربع الحمى بزرود
I salute you, O abode of dignity, with a wreath
يا راقد الطرف ما للطرف إغفاء
O you who sleeps with eyelids closed, why does the eye slumber?
دعاه ورقم الليل بالبرق مذهب
The night in its dark robes called to him as the lightning flashed,
عشقت معاطف قده المياس
She fell in love with his strong, proud neck
يا طائرا ناح إذ طاح الحمام به
O bird, when the doves fell upon him
لعبت بالشطرنج مع شادن
