١. حَلَلْتَ بِأَحْشَاءٍ لَها مِنكَ قَاتِلُ
فَهَلْ أَنْتَ فِيهَا نَازِلٌ أَوْ مُنازِلُ
2. Since your veiling, what's happened to the night I see?
It's as if between us there's a divide, blocking the view.
٢. أَرَى اللَّيْلَ مُذْ حُجِّبْتَ مَا حَالَ لَوْنُهُ
عَلى أَنّهُ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَكَ حَائِلُ
3. Before your beauty entranced me, madness of passion
Had not seized my heart, and made wise counsel its fool.
٣. وَمَا كُنْتُ مَجْنُونَ الهَوَى قَبْلَ أَنْ يُرَى
لِقَلْبي مِنْ صُدْغَيْكَ فِي الأَسْرِ عَاقِلُ
4. Had your glances not dealt me a blow that proved fatal
I'd not have known that your gaze was beginning to cool.
٤. وَلَوْلا سِنَانٌ مِنْ لِحاظِكَ قاتِلٌ
لَما كُنْتُ أَدْرِي أَنّ طَرْفَكَ ذابِلُ
5. Why doesn't lovesickness for you still stir me, when yours
Is a vision of beauty mine eyes are denied to duel?
٥. وَلِمْ لا يَصِحُّ الوَجْدُ فِيكَ ونَاظِري
لِنَسْخَةِ حُسْنٍ مِنْ سَناكَ يُقَابِلُ
6. My way of speaking betrays the desire that fills me,
Though your aloofness from me is my mind's only school.
٦. وَلِي مَنْطِقٌ مِنْ نَحْوِ شَوْقي أَصولُه
بِعِلْمِ المعاني مِنْ خِلافِكَ شَاغِلُ
7. Will it bring me joy, dawn of beauty, if fate
Decrees I gain your cheek's favor, though fortune is cruel?
٧. أَيُسْعِدُني يا طَلْعَةَ البَدْرِ طَالِعٌ
وَمِنْ شَقْوتي حَظٌّ بِخَدَّيكَ نَازِلُ
8. You've grown stingy, refusing to listen - no gain can be got!
Modesty keeps you remote - how can anyone rule?
٨. بَخِلْتَ وَلَمْ تَسْمَعْ فَمَا مِنْكَ نائِلٌ
وَصَانَكَ إِعْراضٌ فَمَا لَكَ نائِلُ
9. Your cheeks' roses - even the greatest poet would fail
To describe them, though long has their beauty been his jewel.
٩. وَلَوْ أَنَّ قِسّاً واصِفٌ مِنْكَ وَجْنةً
لأَعَجَزَهُ نَبْتٌ بِهَا وهْوَ باقِلُ
10. You've withdrawn, yet the perfume of your affection remains,
While my state is estranged though our love is the tool.
١٠. وَلِي مِنْكَ عَرْفٌ مِنْ وِدَادِكَ عاطِرٌ
وَحَاليَ مِنْ عِرْفَانِ وَصْلِكَ عَاطِلُ
11. Whatever you do, lends assistance - just as the fallen
May be raised up again by the hand that caused his downfall.
١١. عَلَى كُلِّ أَمْرٍ مِنْكَ عَوْنٌ فَرُبَّما
يُعينُ الَّذي أَبْلى بِما أَنْتَ فَاعِلُ
12. My eyes are enchanting, guarding my cheek from all gazes,
My glances are languid, though freely my tears rise and spill.
١٢. وَبي ساحِرٌ في اللَّحْظِ لِلخَدِّ حارِسٌ
وذَابِلُ أَعْطافٍ لِدَمْعِي باذِلُ
13. My hair is like night - so why is it short, without length,
When my lot's bitter sorrow? Does this not cause you to feel?
١٣. وَشَعْرٍ كَليْلِي كانَ طُولاً فَما لَهُ
قَصيراً كَحَظِّي هَلْ لِذَاكَ دَلائِلُ
14. Indeed in the darkness its length grew excessive -
But the over-outstretched at the limit turns short, and lies still.
١٤. نَعم قَدْ تَناهى في الظَّلامِ تَطاوُلاً
وَعِنْدَ التَّنَاهِي يَقْصُر المُتطاوِلُ
