يا عين هذا المصطفى أحمد
O eye, this is Mustafa Ahmad,
قم هاتها كالنار ذات الوقود
Arise, like a fire with fuel
إذا ما امتطيت الفلك مقتحم البحر
If I set sail on a ship, braving the seas
لمن الكتائب في العجاج الأكدر
For whom are the battalions in the turbulent darkness
سلا دارها أن أنبأ الطلل القفر
The ruins told the desert about her abode,
سريرة شوق في الهوى من أذاعها
The secret longing in passion, for whoever divulged it,
هد الحمام لآل عبد مناف
The pigeons cooed for the family of Abd Manaf
يقول تفاحنا الزاهي بنضرته
Our apple tree says in its greenness
تفديك لو قبل المنون فداها
You would ransom him if death embraced him
يقول راجي الصمد
Friendship of the Friends
يا صاح هذا المشهد الأقدس
O owner of this most sacred scene
انظر إلى الفحم فيه الجمر متقد
Roses are red, violets are blue
لله من واله عان بأسرته
He who has a friend to aid his family,
وخود تحاول وصلي وقد
And cheeks trying to reach me though
لقد ذهبت أنفس العاشقين
The lovers' souls have passed away
أما ترى الأيك قد غنت صوادحه
Do you not see the groves singing joyfully
يا رب كم لك من يد عظمت
O Lord, how many a hand you have exalted
من عم طلعتك الغراء بالبلج
Who adorned your radiant dawn with dew,
على باب ابن معصوم أنخنا
We knocked at the door of the son of Ma'sum
أمشرفا قدري بسعد قدومه
Honoring my fate with the bliss of your arrival
بربك إن يممت يا صاحبي نجدا
By your Lord, if you head towards Najd, my friend
سل عن فؤادك حين طاش بك الهوى
Ask your heart when passion has ravaged you,
لا تحسبن فرند صارمه به
Do not think her piercing glance but transient
صح عن جوده حديث العطايا
The gifts speak truly of his generosity
ألية بانعطاف القامة النضرة
With a slender figure and radiant grace
وافتك والزهر في روض الدجى زهر
You came, and the flowers in the garden of night bloomed,
من قاس جدوى راحتيك إذا همت
He who measures the worth of your rest
شق الدجى عن نحره الفجر
The dawn rent open the darkness from its throat,
أليلة الحشر لا بل يوم عاشور
It is not the night of gathering, but the day of Ashura
وحياتكم يا ساكني أم القرى
By your lives, O dwellers of the mother of towns
ليس احمرار لحاظه عن علة
The redness of his cheeks is no defect
سرت موهنا والنجم في أذنها قرط
She walked gently, a ring in her ear,
من لشملي لو فاز منكم بجمع
Who can join my family if one of you wins
أفي كل ربع للمطي بنا وقف
In every quarter the rider stops for us,
بكيت أسى لو رد عنك البكا حتفا
I wept in anguish, had my weeping turned away your fate,
إلى الله مما يلاقي المحب
To God from what a lover faces
حسن ابتدائي بذكري جيرة الحرم

ومزر بضوء الشمس لم تر وجهه
By the sun's radiance his face you've never seen
دع الندامة لا يذهب بك الندم
Let go of regret, regret will not take you
الحمد لله حمدا دائما أبدا

أيا سحب نيسان روي الكروم
O April clouds, water the vineyards,
أصابت نواظره مهجتي

يا بالغا من بلاغة العرب
O you who attained the eloquence of the Arabs
أمعلن النوح في أغصانه شجنا
The branches lament with sorrowful wailing,
ولئن قضيت لنا بشرب مدامة
Even if you grant us a drink of pleasure,
من أودع الراح والأقاح فمك
You who stored tenderness and passion in me
ما على حاديهم لو كان عاجا
No blame upon their inspiration though it seemed impossible,
وغادة من بنات الهند قد برزت
A maiden of India appeared,
مرنح القد من ثنى لك عطفيك
The slender branch sways for you, bending its arms
يا كحيل الجفون
O kohl of the eyelids
ألا والنسيم سحر
Oh gentle breeze of dawn
ولو أنني أسعى لنفسي وجدتني
Had I sought my own good I would have been
لله مهجة واله لم يثنها
For God is an untouched jewel
قف بالكثيب
Stand by the sand dune
لا تقل البدر لاح في الغسق
Do not say the full moon has set in the dark
بنفسي هيفاء المعاطف ناهد
With my soul is the graceful Hayfa
يا برق العوالي
O lightning of the heights
ذاك الحجاز وهذه كثبانه
That is Al-Hejaz and its sand dunes
أما ترى الصبح قد لاحت بشائره
Do you not see the dawn has shown its tokens,
ذهبت فنون مسرتي فتنوعت
My pleasures have gone away, so varied
وافى إليك بكأس الراح يرتاح
The wine comes smiling to you as a lamp
ربرب الحرم
The lord of the sanctuary
تفديك أنفسنا من الأسواء
Your lives ransom us from evils
ولقد طرقت الحي من سعد
I have wandered the abodes of Sa’d
وافى خيالك بعد طول نفار
Your imagination came to me after a long estrangement
للريح في وجنات الورد تخميش
The wind rustles the rose gardens
أشجيتني وا مطوق أشجيت
You captivated me, O slender and graceful one
بكيت لبرق لاح بالثغر باسمه
I wept for a lightning that flashed with his name on my lips
آه يا حبل النوى ما أطولك
Oh cord of affinity, how lengthy you are!
يا قهوة قشرية
O coffee, light brown
أما والهوى حلفا ولست بحانث
Though I swore to love, I'm no oath-breaker
لولا ازديارك في الكرى وهنا
Had you not spurned affection in this abode
طاب نشر الصبا ووقت الصباح
The morning breeze spreads its fragrance,
لك الخير إن جزت اللوى والمطاليا
Goodness be unto you if you visit the dwellings and ruins,
أيا ماجدا قد أتقن اللفظ والمعنى
O Majid who mastered diction and meaning
ولقد حللت من المنازل واديا
I have abandoned homes and traveled a valley,
من قاس جدوى يديك يوما
The one who compared the benefit of your hands one day
وعلى سلبها الوقار فكم أه
Though robbed of dignity, how much she sighed
أفي كل يوم للأماني تكذيب
In each day there is denial of hopes,
الصبح والليل وشمس الضحى
Morning and night and the morning sun's light
ألا إنما الياقوت أحسن جوهر
Oh ruby red, the finest gem of all
لمن العيس لها في البيد نفح
For whom is the beauty whose fragrance wafts in the desert?
قم هاتها حمراء قبل المزاج
Rise, bring me this red wine before I lose my cheer,
لله ما أحلى وصال الملاح
How sweet is the union with the beloved!
أربة الخدر ذات الريط والخمر
O maid of slender waist with wine and draughts of joy,
بالفتح والنصر هذا السير والسفر
With conquest and victory this journey and travel,
أما الصبوح فإنه فرض

خليلي هل عهدي بمكة راجع
My beloved, will I return to Mecca?
لله در معاشر آلفتهم
For God's sake, I cherished companions I befriended,
يا كوكبا لم تحوه الأفلاك
O star untouched by the orbits!
كوكب الصبح قد بدا يحكيك
The morning star has appeared, telling you
سقى تلك الأباطح والرمالا
It watered those plateaus and sands
تذكر بالحمى رشأ أغنا
He reminisced about a pasture where a lover once sang,
إلهي أنت ذو فضل
My God, you are of overflowing favor and grace
والله لو رمت في غرامي
By God, if I pursued my love
فارقت مكة والأقدار تقحمني
I left Mecca as fate compelled me,
بك في ملة الغرام اقتديت
In the doctrine of love, I followed your example
القمر في العقرب
The moon in Scorpio
أدرت تلك الدمى أي دما
That tear shed, what blood did it spill
وروضة قابلنا بشرها
In a garden we met its joyous tidings
يا بروق الحيا
O lights of life
يا أيها المولى الذي
O Lord who sacrificed
جاء البشير مبشرا
The messenger came with good news
يهلك المال بالعطاء ويحيا
Wealth is diminished by giving it away, while
إذا ضلت قلوب عن هداها
When hearts go astray from their guidance
يا حسنها جارية أقبلت
O her beauty, she came in the night
لا تحسبن فرند صارمه به
Do not assume her frowning face made fair
تاريخ ختمي لأنوار الربيع أتى
My fate is sealed as spring’s lights fade away
خليلي خطب الحب أيسره صعب
My beloved, love's discourse is easy at first
ليقعد الدهر بي ما شاء وليقم
Let time sit with me as long as it wants and let it stand up
صاح إن جزت بذي الأثل فحي
O friend, if you pass by the beloved's abode, give greetings
بدا كغصن مائس
He appeared like a swaying branch
أما والشفاه اللعس والأعين النعس
With lips of weariness and eyes of sleepiness,
بدا والليل معتكر
The night has dawned, gloomy,
هجر الحبائب جانبي
The loved ones have deserted my side,
أسعفت ذات الرضاب السلسبيل
The one with braided hair has granted relief
لله روض بات نرجسه به
God has a garden, whose narcissus was slept upon by Him
سرت نفحة من حيهم بسلام
A gentle breeze blew from their abode in peace,
ولما التقينا بالغوير عشية
When we met at Al-Ghuwayr one evening,
هم نقضوا عهد الوداد وأقبلوا
They broke the covenant of affection and came
أئن من الشوق الذي في جوانحي
Is this the longing in my heart
تذكر والذكرى تهيج أخا الوجد
He remembers and remembrance kindles longing, O brother of passion
قد طلع البدر في كواكبه
The full moon rose among the stars
سلام على رب الفضائل والعلى
Peace upon the Lord of virtues and loftiness,
ومن ركب العجوز فلا يبالي
He who rides the old woman cares not
يا هماما له المعالي قصور
O you whose glory towers rise
سقى صوب الغمام عريش كرم
The clouds poured down upon a vineyard’s bower
علام احتراسك لا أعلم
Why are you so cautious, I do not know,
ورحلتي المشتهاة تزري
My longed-for journey comes to pass
يا عاذلي في الأماني
O you who blame me for my dreams
لقد آن أن تثني أبي زمامها
It is time for you to restrain your censure
وشاعر قريضه

أشذا نعمان أهدته النعامى
Ashad Na'aman I have gifted ostriches
إليك فقلبي لا تقر بلابله
To you my heart has no rest though nightingales warble
يا حبذا الفيل الذي شاهدته
O how wonderful was that elephant I saw
ما بين قلبي وبرق المنحنى نسب
The kinship between my heart and the zigzagging lightning,
خطرت في شمائل ونعوت
She appeared in attributes and qualities
وأهيف قد قد القلوب بقده
And Ah, his height hath stirred the hearts, both far and near,
اسقياني على اقتراح العذارى
Give me to drink at the virgins' suggestion,
قامت تدير سلافاً من مراشفها
She arose, turning away her pillow,
لو أبانت حجابها أسماء
If Asma' unveiled her veil,
ما كنت أحسب أن الشمل منتظم
I did not think that fate was so orderly
يا ملكا عم نداه الورى
O king whose call encompasses the land
لمعت ليلا فقالوا لهب
It shone at night, so they said it was a flame
يا دار مية باللوى فالأجرع
O homeland of Meyya abundant with twisting valleys,
أيا بانيا عليا القصور مؤملا
O builder of lofty palaces hoping
لا تحسب الراح أورثت يده
Do not assume the breeze made his hand
أشارت من لها في الحسن شاره
She gestured with that beauty granting her distinction,
قلت له والدمع في وجنتي
I said to him, while tears flowed down my cheeks
وافتك تنهج للخطاب سبيلا
You chose the path of estrangement to address me,
أي ذنب في هواكم أذنبه
What sin in loving you has he committed,
نزلنا من برار بكل واد
We descended from the wilderness into every valley
أمير المؤمنين فدتك نفسي

حلت بقلبي وثوت

إن المكارم والفضائل والندى

تجن واعتب تجد مني بذاك رضا

عسى ما عسى من عود شملي يكتسي

جلا الكؤوس فجلى ظلمة السدف

إن لم تفز يوما بقرب مزاره

The pleasure of meeting you has arrived unannounced
أما وابتسام الروض عن شنب الزهر

قم هاتها في جنح ليل دامس

By the Lord of the ankles whose heart is his heart
يا ربيب الندى وترب المعالي

ذكر الخيف والحمى وحجونه

وليلة عانقت في جنحها
In the night's embrace, I held
لنا كل يوم رنة وعويل
Every day we have wailing and lament
بدر الدياجي احتجب
The full moon of my longing was veiled
يا غزالا يخفي سناه الغزاله
O gazelle hiding his youth with gazelle charm
أتركتني دنفا ورحت معافى
You left me weak and went away restored,
هو طود علم لا يبارى رفعة
He is a mountain of knowledge that cannot be challenged in loftiness
سقى صوب الحيا أرض الحجاز
The clouds watered the land of Hejaz
أما لليل المستهام إشراق
Does this endless night of lovers have a dawn?
وقالوا به صفراء يرجى زوالها
They said she is yellow, hoped it will soon pass
لا طرقتك الخطوب والعلل
Neither hardships nor illnesses have afflicted you,
هاتا أعيدا لي حديثي القديم
Bring back to me my old tales,
سل الديار عن أهيل نجد
Ask the abodes about the people of Nejd,
يا طود مجد في المكارم راس
O you towering pillar of glory and generosity
أحباي لي في كل يوم وليلة
My loves, in every day and night
جنب الغزال الأغيد

عجبا لمن من الحبيب عليه

سفرت أميمة ليلة النفر
ماست فأزرت بالغصون الميس
دعت ريحانة الأدباء لبي
يا بريق الحيا ويا عذب البان
من ذا الذي شرع المحبة
معصيتي أعظم من طاعتي
ومورد الوجنات أغيد خاله
تراءت سليمى وهي كالبدر أو أسنى
لما جنى الطرف ورد وجنته
برئت من حولي ومن قوتي
ما عاد عاشوراء إلا همت
رويدك حاديالعيس أين تريد
أمعاد هل يفضي إليك معادي
الله لي من واعد وعده

حزنت لموتك طيبة

طاف بدر الدجى بشمس الكؤوس
قل للمليحة في القباء الأطلس
لمن ساريات بين وهن وتغليس
سلام على بدر له السعد مطلع
بنفسي من قد حاز لون الدجى فرعا
أشمس سناها في الدجنة بازغ
قم هاتها وحسام الفجر منذلق
مزجت كأسها بخمر وريق
بين العذيب وبين برقة ضاحك
ألا هل درت من أقصدت أسهم الهلك
يا دار مية بالجرعاء حياك
هذا الحجاز وذاك ضاله
