1. Let go of regret, regret will not take you
You are not the first to stumble

2. It is fate and judgments in action
And the Omnipotent is wise in His judgments

3. Bow down, nothing lasts forever
Alas, no blessings or curses remain

4. Yesterday you lived in glory and luxury
Where there was joy, comfort and bounty

5. And today you live in the abode of humiliation
Empty-handed, no might or honor

6. As if your sword, its light never shone
And rain from your clouds never poured

7. What could have helped against destiny
If not for fate and what the pen has ordained

8. O morning that has dawned, revealing all endings
After you, customs are but lines drawn

9. I mingled in the plains of a people without morals
To them, light and darkness are the same

10. Among them, foxes lord over lions
The hawk is hunted by crows and vultures

11. The scabbard is preferred over the proud sword
And servants lord over their masters

12. If they don't acknowledge my superiority, no wonder
One deaf cannot delight in song

13. Or they denied my lofty status, but assuredly
Arabs and non-Arabs have attested to what they denied

14. What is my status among them?
Pearls lose no value buried in dust

15. Don't be surprised by my worries though my body thrives
For their fire rages in my heart

16. Every person's worries match their aspirations
Concerns and ambitions never part

17. My hands never controlled the necks of the arrogant
Nor have my feet ever strode to the heights

18. If I don't cleave the deep seas mounted
On raging waves, untamed and unbridled

19. Implements I have set aflame
And horses whose muzzles I have adorned

20. I roamed every desolate expanse
With no landmarks or signs

21. And attained nothing I hoped for
Only fanciful dreams and wishes

22. Oh what calamities have befallen
Until kinship was lost among them

23. I never trusted miserliness or a brother
Except that the evils of both plagued me

24. And every relative I drew near
Complained of my severing of ties

25. This son of my mother I cared for
I never suspected evil of him

26. I honored him out of deference
And the pious revere kinship

27. He ended up disgracing me among foes
And rushed to plunder what I left behind

28. By Allah, enemies never did what you have done
Never looted what was left behind

29. Why didn't you forbid him or guard
What women and sanctuaries adorned

30. You enabled the plunder of chaste women
With no wall or servants to protect them

31. Where is chivalry if modesty didn't forbid him
Or fear of violating what was left vulnerable

32. He destroyed my brotherhood, no shame
Does not this man know shame?

33. It was as if he nursed a grudge
And when I was absent, sought revenge

34. This was not my reward for honoring
The rights of brotherhood, but people have traits

35. Say peace to kinship now lost
Alas, communities have forsaken its rights
