1. You chose the path of estrangement to address me,
And drew out the train of reproach very long.

2. The proud one mocks the shining stars,
The blossoms still green, and the soft breeze.

3. I named our kisses yours, and did not say,
Had it not been for graying hair, I'd name them mine.

I had adorned the pearls of her speech artfully.

5. She never boasted with eloquent words,
Except that her own were the most eloquent.

6. I let loose the glances of blame in their race,
And they came to wound you, outstripping the lead camels.

7. What ails the nights that stand firmly
And nights of our love have rusted away?

8. You have disappointed me and severed the rope of affection,
And substituted strangers for my love.

9. You have avoided the paths of loyalty,
And taken the ways of estrangement.

10. I have borne from you, along with time
A heavy burden, while living in forced separation.

11. Wait! You did not turn away from me confident
Except in one unable to avail you a wick.

12. Consider yourself - what you have done! For I will not
See any good for you had you known beforehand.

13. God's sanctities of love you made
Careless, making its guidance misguidance.

14. How many gloaters had hoped to see
The anchor of love empty and useless!

15. So come back soon seeking
Forgiveness, though the enemy be averse.

16. Until I can argue for you against every doubter,
And establish proofs of your loyalty.

17. Far be it from one like you! For friendship is a covenant
The ancient pact for which gave guarantee.

18. I hope through you to dispel sadness,
And purge the heat of my heart's sickness,

19. And to return singing in love and regret:
Would that I had not taken you as a friend!
