1. In every quarter the rider stops for us,
And in every house our tears flow.

2. We ask all who dwell
And follow every trace.

3. My friends, if the homes are in ruins
The love in my heart is never in ruins.

4. Yearning for the house where I spent my youth,
No prevention or turning away kept me from it.

5. Those first loves and passions
Are knots that will not be undone.

6. The moons rise over it, greeting us,
Its breeze blows its perfume over us.

7. Many a silent heart in the groves
Found joy in it while the stars inclined their ears.

8. When she toys with you in her conversation
You are drunk though no wine is poured.

9. The passing breeze makes it sway
Like a flexible branch of acacia.

10. Ask the singing gazelle when she is compared to it
How the prominent collarbones make answer.

11. Slow of glance, remote, as though
Her eyelids were wearied by the passions of lovers.

12. I spent my youth happily heedless there
No hint of separation disturbed our company.

13. Nights without end at a campsite
Where I quaffed its wine and kissed its lips.

14. How many nights the dawn sought its lodging
While the darkness lengthened the dark tresses.

15. May you live! Is affection possible after separation?
Can the boughs frown at us and then bend affectionately?

16. My sorrows are renewed though I struggle on,
Behind and ahead only truth and falsehood.

17. By my life! hopes are not a youth’s trait
Unless confirmed by intuitions or revelations.

18. Not every wish is fulfilled, but one should not
Be downcast or give up hope.

19. The rising fortunes of his hopes
Through the munificence of Nijam’s order began to shine.

20. Noble, whether bestowing from his overflowing palm,
Or aiming arrows from his bow.

21. Ally of the dewy clouds that gave no shelter to money
For gain, nor made comfort his habit.

22. He has a nature like a meadow where the dew plays
And palms of generosity beyond all palms.

23. The young man of glory who rewards exalted ranks
Never deterred by indifference or weakness.

24. He climbed elevated steps which, if not for his late age,
Signs and prophets and books would have advanced him to.

25. He is pleasing in the attack when the prey recoils
Where the wild asses are, under a roof of bows.

26. And his sword rises gloriously in his hand
When the two armies meet and the ranks draw near.

27. Familiar with the heights, he aspires only to the heights,
When his comrades aspire to their familiar friend.

28. He extends his bounds beyond all bounds,
So neither drawn near nor remote.

29. Gently! If men approach his orbit
else these are plain words and deceptive rumors.

30. As if the approaching litters are led
By brides DISPLAYED IN GLORY FOR THEIR PROCESSION.

31. Over them are lowered curtains of silk
But none raise the veil covering them.

32. Never have the heads of his foes ripened
In the meadow of battle but their plucking was at hand.

33. Highest of the lofty, glorious, daring, and brilliant
None other exhausts praise of you.

34. I bear witness that you are peerless in the heights
Though understanding denies or understands this.

35. To you I commit the reins of its affair
And you rouse it after it had almost slumbered.

36. For these people you are a refuge if times are corrupt
And for religion and world you are a cave if they stumble.

37. You attained in the highest the most exalted rank,
Surpassing all mankind, who trail behind you.

38. Your elevated princely line continues forever
Casting fine rain, its draft is clear.

39. The feast of sacrifice comes to you in good fortune,
While for your enemies sacrifice means disgrace and perishing.

40. To you I led the virgin bride of my poetry
Adorned with composition and well-arranged.

41. Blood, and remain, and submit! Command the age, forbidding,
Revering you always, you are supreme.
