1. What sin in loving you has he committed,
A passionate lover whose thirst was never quenched,
١. أَيُّ ذَنبٍ في هَواكم أَذنَبه
مغرَمٌ لم يقضِ منكم أَربَه
2. Separation made intense sorrow obligatory,
By your aloofness - I wonder - what did it necessitate?
٢. أَوجبَ البينُ له فَرطَ الأَسى
بجفاكم يا تُرى ما أَوجبَه
3. Your admiration is no novelty to them,
Whoever saw something wondrous admired it,
٣. لَيسَ نُكراً بكُمُ إِعجابُهُ
من رأَى شَيئاً عَجيباً أَعجبَه
4. Do not blame him if he is infatuated with you
And poured passion and expressed his fervor,
٤. لا تَلوموه إِذا هامَ بكم
وَصَبا شَوقاً وأَبدى وَصَبَه
5. How sweet is ecstasy in loving you!
And my torment in you - how sweet it is!
٥. ما أَلَذَّ الوَجدَ في حبِّكُمُ
وَعَذابي فيكُمُ ما أَعذبَه
6. O my descending fear! How did you harm them
If you had united those whom you separated?
٦. يا نزولَ الخَيفِ ما ضَرَّكمُ
لَو وَصَلتم من قَطعتُم سَبَبه
7. Yearning betrayed him so since
Your absence prolonged, he lost composure,
٧. مُستهامٌ خانَه الصَبرُ فمذ
بعُدت أَظعانُكم ما قَربَه
8. Whenever a smile shone, he was stupefied
And if a breeze blew, it elated him
٨. كُلَّما لاحَ بَريقٌ شاقَه
وإذا هبَّ نَسيمٌ أَطرَبَه
9. Since destiny distanced him from your homes
No day has been palatable to him
٩. منذُ أَقصَتهُ النَوى عن داركم
ما أَساغَ الدَهرُ يَوماً مَشرَبَه
10. And if his glance attempted to return
Yearning for you shook him and he was alert
١٠. وإذا رامَ هُجوعاً طَرفه
هزَّه الشَوقُ إليكم فاِنتَبَه
11. The crescent of beauty resembles him
A bright moon - from it - has its likeness
١١. وَبشرقيَّ الحِمى من ضارِجٍ
بَدرُ حُسنٍ منه في البدر شَبَه
12. Passion and sorrow have ignited his entrails
And love has captivated his reason and seized it
١٢. أَضرَم الأَحشاء وَجداً وأَسىً
وَسَبى العَقلَ غَراماً وَسَبَه
13. A dark complexioned man - if night overcomes him
Dawn attacks him and defeats him
١٣. أَسمَرٌ لو غالبَ اللَيلُ به
هاجمَ الصُبح عليه غَلبَه
14. He sees no blame in love and if
The lover blames - he finds it flirtatious
١٤. لا يَرى في الحُبِّ عتباً وإذا
عتبَ الصبُّ دَلالاً أَعتَبَه
15. He mixed coquetry into aloofness
And told of flirtation from it out of anger
١٥. مزجَ الدلَّ بأَعراض الجَفا
وَحَكى الإِدلالُ منه غضبَه
16. So if a lover intends to blame
The matter becomes confusing for him and indistinct
١٦. فإذا رام محبٌّ عتبَهُ
خَفي الأَمرُ عليه واِشتبَه
