1. He appeared like a swaying branch
In the finest of garments
١. بَدا كغصنٍ مائِسِ
في أَفخر الملابسِ
2. A full moon that shone for us
Dispelling the darkness of melancholy
٢. بدرٌ إذا لاحَ لنا
جلّا دُجى الحنادسِ
3. From his cheeks he pours
Wine and from his cups
٣. يدير من رُضابه
شَهداً ومن أَكوابِهِ
4. Comfort that his palm dictated
And fire that the palm of one who grasps lit
٤. راحاً حكت بكفِّه
ناراً بكفِّ قابسِ
5. I ransom him from distress
Of forebears, sleepy and lazy
٥. أَفديه من مهفهف
لَدن القَوام أَهيَفِ
6. As if his beauty
Is the beauty of a sleepy gazelle
٦. كأَنَّما مقلتُهُ
مقلةُ ظبيٍ ناعسِ
7. Imagine him when he appears
The sun his ransom
٧. تخاله إذا بَدا
شمساً له الشَمسُ فِدا
8. And his hair intoxicating
Like the wings of a tranquil night
٨. وَالفرعُ منه فاحِمٌ
كَجُنح لَيلٍ دامسِ
9. His love settled in my innermost being
And from his ardour I came alive
٩. هواهُ حلَّ في الحَشا
ومن حُميّاه اِنتَشى
10. My mind when it reproaches him
In the noblest of gatherings
١٠. عَقلي إذا نادمتُه
في أَشرف المجالسِ
