1. You captivated me, O slender and graceful one
When you sang

2. You sang, but sang only for your heart while forgetting me
And you did not care for me

3. And for passion, in my innermost being, you lit a fire
And increased my burning desire

4. You reminded me of the one I love, so I came alive
Like the dead speaking of life

5. Slender, tall, noble forehead
My quarter in it is good

6. In his love many a lion has been hunted
And the hunted yielded

7. And many a love-crazed one folded the carpet for him
He did not let him down

8. But my love for him will last forever
I did not used to hide it

9. By Allah, O rider of the five mounts
If you cross the wild swaths

10. Then stand for a while amid those sand dunes
And say to whoever appears

11. O roamer among the wildlife and gazelles
And fresh river-side thickets

12. You forgot, O my alluring one, about the one who befriended you
And wasted himself over you

13. You ignited the fire of passion in my chest
And you don’t know

14. And your aloofness betrayed my patience
And my estrangement became prolonged

15. And it was sweet for me to be bound by you
And my secret spread

16. And in the thick of night you set up camp
And made my abode your own

17. When will I ever get to see your beautiful self
In proximity to your beautiful dwelling

18. And inhale, my wish, your lovely scent
And taste your sweet waters

19. So say—my soul be your redemption—greetings
My Lord and Master of mine

20. This day the meeting felt good, for you came
So smitten was I by you
