Lofty, sturdy, firmly founded base

١. يا طودَ مَجدٍ في المَكارِم راسِ
سامي العماد موطَّد الآساسِ

2. No wonder the thoroughbred stumbles and falls
When feet slip on dew and mail coats

٢. لا غرو إِن سقط الجوادُ لعثرةٍ
عثرت لَها قدمُ النَدى والباسِ

3. For you have burdened him with the heaviest of noble duties
And he has wilted after long enduring them

٣. فَلَقَد حملتَ عليه أَثقالَ العُلى
فَغَدا ذَلولاً بعد طولِ شِماسِ

4. Until you gave him his head, and let slip his reins
Racing ahead of all others toward the ultimate goals

٤. حتّى إِذا أَلقيتَ فضلَ عِنانِه
سَبقاً إِلى الغايات قَبلَ الناسِ

5. Unable to bear what you made so weighty
He fell just as a firmly planted tall tree falls

٥. لَم يَستَطِع حَملاً لما أَوقَرتَه
فَهوى كَما يَهوي العَظيمُ الراسي

6. Never could a racing steed bear and run
With the mountain of highest rank on his back

٦. هَيهات أَن يَسطيعَ يحملُ راكِضاً
جبلَ العُلى فرسٌ من الأَفراسِ

7. So let the envious churl go wanting what he has
And find but despair in his hopes

٧. فَليذهَب النَغلُ الحَسودُ لما به
وَليحظَ مِمّا رامَه بالياسِ

8. And relax in comfort, breathing sweet breaths
Peacefully spending long nights

٨. واِسلم على مرِّ اللَيالي راتعاً
في طيبِ عيشٍ طيِّب الأَنفاسِ
