أنكرت من أدمعي نثري سواكبها

يامن غدا سببي حتى عرفت به

قل للفقيه مقالا ليس يعدم من

قال لي أحمد وقد أزف البين
Roses are red, violets are blue
بنفسي من أهدى إلي كتابه
With my own self who gifted me his book
إذا اعتز بالمال الرجال فإننا
If men take pride in wealth, then we
كتابك سعد بالمسرات طالع
Your book is blessed with pleasures unfolding
قيل للكركي إذ قام
The one-legged man was asked
وكم فرحة منتوجة من كآبة
How much joy springs from melancholy,
قل للذي ركب الفساد
Tell the one who rode corruption
أخلفت وعدك يا علي وكل من
You broke your promise, O Ali, and anyone
قد مر أمس ولم يعبأ به أحد
Yesterday has passed and no one cared for it
لئن أبدع الدهر ما بيننا
Though time may render us apart
أين قلبي سباه من بدر تم
Where is my heart that was captured
لنا صاحب يصفي العلوم وأهلها
We have a friend who purifies knowledge and its people
وفي همتي عشق السماح وليس لي
My spirit is inclined towards merciful love, though
إن كنت تطلب رتبة الأشراف
If you seek rank and nobility
لنا صديق إن رأى
We have a friend, if he sees
إذا ما ظفرت بود امرىء
If you have won a man's affection
كتبت فلم تجبني عن كتابي
I wrote to you, but no reply came from you
فديتك إن مقتر رازح الحال
I sacrifice myself for you, though I am poor and destitute
لا در نوازل الأحداث
No fate befalls the progression of events
أرى وحدة المرء كربا له
I see a man's solitude as misery for him
قل للفقيه أجل الناس كلهم
Say to the wise man, the most noble of all people,
ألا طرد الكرى عني حبيبا
Alas! Time has driven away from me a beloved one,
قل للذي أبدع في الشعر صف
Say to him who excelled in poetry, describe
بحضرة سلطاننا عصبة
In the presence of our ruler, a gang
احذر صديقك إن تغير إنه
Beware of your friend if he changes
ثاني الحروف من اسم من أنا عبده
The second letter of the name of Him whom I worship
أفهام أهل الفهم إن قستها
The understandings of the wise, if weighed,
يهدى مواعده أمام هباته
He keeps his promise in the face of his gifts
اشهد بأن الله ذو قدرة
Testify that Allah is All-Powerful
أحب من الإخوان كل مهذب
I love every refined brother,
تكدر لي من كنت أرجو صفاءه
The one I hoped would stay clear, became turbid for me,
لو أنني أفنيت عمري كله
If I spent all my life
أولى الذخائر بالسياسة
The prime of treasures is youth
إن كنت تأنس بالحبيب وقربه
If you find solace with the beloved and his company
ألم تر ما أتاه أبو علي
Did you not see what came to Abu Ali
فإني ضرغام يوم الهياج
For I am a wolf on the day of battle
أخ لي زكي النفس والأصل والطبع
A brother of mine, noble of soul, origin, and nature
يا من يلوم على ضني بخلته
O you who blame me for being miserly
لمولاي عندي أياد تجل
My lord has favors too great to count
ولي أخ مستظرف
I have a brother, witty and smart
ماذا عليه لو أباح ريقه
What if he offered his saliva
ياقوم دمعي ودمي
O people, my tears and my blood
قد تمنيت أن أراك فلما
I wished that I would see you, but when
شوقي إليك ربيع القلب ملبسه
My longing for you is like spring adorning the heart,
يا راحلا أمسى يزم ركابه
O you who depart when patience fails him
كتاب مولاي قد أربى على أملي
My Master's book has raised my hopes
من شاء عيشا رخيا يستفيد به
Whoever desires an easy life that benefits
فشرط الفلاحة غرس النبات
The condition of prosperity is planting vegetation
مكب على النحو ينحو به
Bent over grammar, he moves with it,
أرى منك طول الدهر إقبال قابل
I see in you a long life of favor coming towards me
أبوك كريم غير أنك سابق
Your father is generous, yet you surpass
العلم من شأنه لمن خدمه
Knowledge, for he who serves it
صلاح العباد ورشد الأمم
The welfare of worshippers and the guidance of nations
يا ليلة نادمت فيها عصبة
O night I blamed a group
أخ تباعد عني شخصه ودنا
A brother whose person distanced from me, yet his meaning drew near
العدل ميزاني فمن ير غيره
Justice is my scale, so if one sees
وشادن أبصرته مقبلا
I saw him coming towards me
أنا العبد ترفعني نسبتي

A man needs a shelter to hide in
بلاد الله واسعة فضاها
God's land is spacious, so wander through its plains
إذا لم تجد ناصحا مشفقا
If you do not find a caring advisor
شرفك عقد الدر واصل بعضه
Your starry necklace, each part
جمع الله في الأمير أبي نصر
God gathered in Amir Abu Nasr virtues that raise destinies
يا منفق العمر في لغو وفي عبث
O you who spend a lifetime frivolously and vainly,
أعني على كمدي بالحمد
Help me bear this heat with praise
إذا حيوان كان طعمة ضده
If an animal were the prey of its foe
لئن كسفونا بلا علة
Even if their ships prevailed without cause
قد شابهتني في لون وفي قصف
Roses are red, violets are blue
قل للأمير الأريحي الذي
Tell the fragrant prince who
أنا ضيفك المكدود بالأسفار
I am your guest, worn down by travels,
وقالوا رض النفس الحرون وكفها
They said: "Restrain thy restless soul, and curb it;
منحتكم صدق المودة كاملا
I gave you the fullness of sincere affection
لا تغفلن سبب الكلام وحينه
Do not neglect the cause of speech and its occasion
لا غرو أن لم نجد في الدهر مخترفا
No stranger that we have not found in this life a refuge
خصائص من تشاوره ثلاث
The qualities of one you consult are three
ملك يفيض على العفاة سجاله
A king who lavishes his disputes upon the destitute
عرج علي فما في رونقي رنق
Over the hill to me, my color has no charm
قد غض من أملي أني أرى عملي
My hope is dimmed for I behold my toil
عدل قطوبك بالبشاشة يعتدل
Adjust your mood with cheerfulness, so their balance is corrected
وإني لأختص بعض الرجال
Though some men I do hold dear
صح بالحاكم ما أو
The ruler has fulfilled what
بنفسي كلامك إني نظر
With my soul your words I saw
عول على رأيه إذا حزبت
In times of hardship seek his counsel
تأن في الشيء إذا رمته
Be deliberate in a thing when you attempt it
قل لذي العز والمحل النبيه
Tell the one of glory and high station, the prophet
مطالب العالم أشتات
Roaming are the world's demands
ما أجهل الإنسان بالدنبا
How ignorant man is of the land
يا محب النجاة أصغ لقولي
O seeker of salvation, listen to my words
قول رسول الله لاتنسه
Homeland's Messenger, let not his words fade
الناس إما جائر شرس
People are either tyrannical and vicious
وإذا النوائب أظلمت أحداثها
When misfortunes darken their events,
للمرء من شهوته آمر
Man has from his passions an insistent commander
واعلم بأنك إن مننت بنعمة
Know that if you bestow a favor
يا من يسرح قوله متعسفا
O you who rambles impulsively
لئن عجزت عن شكر برك قوتي
If my strength falls short of thanking Your kindness
إن الوزير أبي عسري فأوردني
The minister Abu Usrei has led me,
صاحب السلطان لابد له
The sultan's companion must bear
ياذا الذي ألها عاجل لهوه
O you who is distracted from your lessons by your urgent frivolity
قل للأمير أدام ربي عزه
Tell the prince may my Lord make his glory last
يا من غدا دينه قولا بلا عمل
O you whose religion is but words without deeds,
أفد طبعك المكدود بالجد راحة
Hard work may weary your inherent disposition
إذا طالبتك النفس يوما بحجة
If one day desire claims you have an excuse,
هدية العبد على قدره
A servant's gift is to his measure
الناس أكثرهم إذا فتشتهم
Most people, if you examine them,
قلبي مقيم بنيسابور عند أخ
My heart dwells in Nishapur with a brother
عليك بحرمان اللئيم لعله
Deny the lowly their desire, perchance
من شكا قسوة الزمان فإني
Whoever complains of the harshness of time, as for me
حرضوني على وزارة بست
They urged me to take up a minister's post
نذوب ولكننا لانتوب
We melt away but do not repent
يا من أراه للزمان حسنه
O you who shows the beauty of time,
ياشيبتي دومي ولا تترحلي
My greying hair, stay with me, do not depart,
سخف الزمان فإن سخفنا فاعذر
Forgive the foolishness of Time, if we too have been foolish
يا شادنا غاب نجم الحسن لولاه
O you whose beauty's star has set, alas!
وليل كأصداغ الحبيب قطعته
I passed a night like the cheeks of a lover
أرى الضر يقفو الحر في كل مقصد
I see hardship pursuing freedom in every goal,
وإني لمحتاج إلى سيد له
I need a master of vast generosity,
لو ارتاح الزمان إلى عتابي
If time were to rest from blaming me,
قلت إذ مات ناصر الدين والدن
I said when the supporter of religion and the world died
جد بالقليل إذا تعذر غيره
Be content with little, if you can't get more,
خل الطريق تعش في ظل عافية
Make way, live in good health's shade,
بين من يعطي ومن يأخذ
Between the giver and the taker
فتى جمع العلياء علما وعفة
A youth gathered excellence, knowledge, purity,
أعنف أقواما بلومي ولا أرى
I blame the most violent people, yet I see
جعلنا أجنبيين
We were made foreigners
معاشر الناس أصغوا قد نصحت لكم
O people, listen, for I have given you good advice
عذلوني وأنكروا أخلاقي
They blamed me and denied my morals,
لا يخيبن الفتى من أمرد
Let no young man lose heart if met
تمكنت من تقبيل كف لو أنني
If I were able to kiss her hand,
سبحان من خص الفلز بعزة
Glory to Him who endowed iron with strength
نشأت بما عانيت من نوب الده
I was raised bearing the woes of fortune's blows,
ثقوا معشر الناس بي إنني
Trust in me, O people, for I am
توق خلافا إن سمحت بموعد
If you would grant a rendezvous in variance
لي سيد هلباجه
I have a master, his garment
فديتك يا روح المكارم كلها
I ransom you, O soul of all generosity
أشكو إليكم ذلة العزل
I complain to you of the humiliation of isolation
إن سل أقلامه يوما ليعملها
If one day he unleashes his pens
لكم تاج الأبوة راق حسنا
You have the crown of fatherhood, shining beautifully
لي سيد رأيه في كل مظلمة
I have a master whose view in every darkness
وقلب الفتى مستودع في شغافه
The young man's heart is a repository in its casing
أقول وقد زمت ركابك للنوى
I say as your departure is determined
وكنت كذئب السوء لما رأى دما
You were like a vicious wolf when he saw blood
سل الله عقلا نافعا واستعذ به
Ask Allah for a useful mind and seek refuge in Him
أعلل بالمنى نسي لعلي
I make excuses with hope that I may forget
رضيت بمكتوب القضاء على راسي
I have accepted what fate has ordained for my head
صحت السلاح لشدة الحرب
The weapons were sharpened for the intensity of war,
وعندي شي شد قوة أسره
I have a thing whose bonds are very strong
إن كنت تطلب ثروة وغنى
If you seek wealth and riches
أنكب عن عذري وإبراز حجتي
I turn away from my excuse and statement of my case,
بدا المعاني وتهذيبها
He polished the meanings and refined them
ذكر أخاك إذا تناسى واجبا
Remind your brother if he forgets a duty
إذا رأيت الوداع فاصبر
When you see farewell, have patience
ضللت عن المقاصد في معاشي

وهت عزماتك عند المشيب
And your determination withered with age
من ظن أن العلا بالمال يجمعه

يا من عقدت به الرجاء فلم يكن

ظل الوزير مقيل كل سعادة

كلكم قد أخذ الجام
You have all taken cups
وإن عدت لها يوما

قيل لي خفيت قلت كبدر
I was told I hid, I said like a full moon
إذا لم يزد علم الفتى قلبه هدى
If a young man's knowledge does not increase his heart with guidance
لنا شيخ بفقحته يواسي
We have a sheikh with chipping teeth, consoling us,
قولا لمولاي في أوقات خلوته
Tell my beloved during his solitude
لئن تنقلت من دار إلى دار
Though I move from home to home
يا ناقها من مرض مسه
O camel, suffering from illness
أخ لي بطيء الير عني وفاؤه
My slow-paced brother has shown me loyalty
سقى الله امرأ إن كف دارت
May God water a man if the cycles
النار آخر دينار نطقت به
Fire is the last dinar you have spoken of
يا من يؤمل أن يفوز بصاحب
O you who hopes to find a friend
إذا ما ذل إنسان بدار
If a man becomes lowly in a land
سلام على قوم مضوا لسبيلهم
Peace upon a people who went on their path,
عجبا لواحد دهره من كاتب
A marvel it is, a writer of his time
وقائلة إن المعالي مناهب
And she said, “High ideals are delusions,”
أما الكريم أبو سعد وهمته
The noble Abu Sa'id and his aspirations
كتبت إليه أستهديه وصلا
I wrote to him seeking reunion
دعني فإن غريم العقل لازمني
Let me be, for madness has stuck with me
من دعاه إخوانه فتباطا
Whoever his brothers called but he was slow to respond
قم هاتها عذراء تصبغ
Arise, give me, virgin, who adorns
رأيت الناس من يحسن إليهم
I saw people, those who do good to them
تجلد واصطبر إن ناب دهر
Endure and be patient if time brings
إن كنت تطلب رتبة الأحرار
If you seek the rank of the noble and free
ما أنس ظمآن بعذب بارد
No thirsty man enjoys cool sweet water
يا من جفا إذ رأى في ظاهري خللا
O you who turned away when you saw a defect in me
سف السويق ونفخ البوق ما اجتمعا
the boiling of porridge and the blowing of the bugle have not come together
إذا مدح الأقوام قرما بسؤدد
When people praise an unworthy man
لا تظنن بي وبرك حي
Do not ever think that my gratitude
أكتاب بست كم تناحركم على
O writers, why do you squabble over
يامن يسامي العلا عفوا بلا تعب
O you who aspires to the heights effortlessly without toil
إن كنت أختار السلو فلا ترح
If I choose the path of peace do not quench
وإذا أعوز الصواب وأضحى
And when truth fails and their words
شافه كفي رشأ
My palm was sprinkled
يامبتلى بضناه يرجو رحمة
Oh afflicted one hoping for mercy
ماذا يقول الشيخ في الكرنب
What does the old man say about turnip?
بنفسي كتاب أراني عيانا
With my own self a book that shows me plainly
يا من تكبر حين ساعده
O you who grew proud when fortune smiled on you
يا قمرا في الفؤاد حلا
O moon in my heart revealed
الشافعي أجل الناس منزلة
The Shafi'i is the greatest of men in status,
من أين للرشأ الغرير الأحور
Whence to the dew its tenderness of cheek
أي عذر أن صام عنه ثنائي
What excuse for one who fasts from it a couple
ويوم جلا عنا ظلام همومنا
A day dispelled from us the darkness of our sorrows,
يا ناعما بسرور عيش زائل
O you who live softly in fleeting joy,
الناس كالنبت فمن شاكر
People are like plants, some grateful
ما استقامت قناة رأيي إلا
My mind was not set straight
من مبلغ الأشرار عني أنني
Who will inform the evildoers that as long as I have sight and a pulsing vein, I think little of them because I oppose them and opposites naturally hate each other. And when they see me approaching, let them know that I turn my face away from friendship with them.
لئن كدر الدهر الخؤون مشاربي
Though time has troubled my days
وأقسم لا يكلمني لحيني
I fear not the passing years
عليك إذا انجاب الدجى بكباب
When dusk falls heavy upon you
إذا تحدثت في قوم لتؤنسهم
When you speak to a people to entertain them
العلم أنفس علقس أنت داخره
Knowledge is the noblest pursuit, you who seek knowledge
لا ترج شيئا خالصا نفعه
Do not expect anything to be purely beneficial,
شرف الوغد بوغد مثله
The glory of tomorrow in a tomorrow like it
ومعشوق يتيه بوجه عاج
With a beloved, wandering a rigid face
ياأيها الباحث عن منهجي
O you who seek my methodology
ربة اللوم أقصري فض فوك
O blamer, shorten your excess blame
بأبي غزال نام عن وصبي به
By the life of a deer that slept on aromatic plants
محبتي لك طبع
My love for you is natural
يا عائب الحبر والأقلام ما قدحت
O you who fault the ink and pens, nothing
تصبر إذا ما ناب كره فربما
Be patient when hardship befalls you, for perhaps
شأنك يا دمع وانحدارك
Your fate, oh tear, and your descent
دعوني وأمري واختياري فإنني
Leave me be with my affair and my choice, for I
وزنا الكأس فارغة وملأى
We weighed the empty goblet and filled it,
الله يعلم أني بعد فرقتكم
God knows that after we parted
أنت قدما أتحت لي من رجائي
You came to me with feet of my hopes
يا راغبا في الحمد والشكر
O you who desire praise and gratitude
لا تعجبن لدهر ظل في صبب
Do not wonder at Time, though it stays long in youth,
وحياة من أصفي حياني له
The life of the one whose life I have purified for him
وقالوا العزل للوزراء حيض
They said that dismissing ministers is menstruation
لوكان هذا الأمر عن سائس
If this matter were up to a wise leader
قل للذي غره عز وساعده
Say to him whom pride and power beguiled,
وزارة الحضرة الكبيرة
The ministry of highness is great
يا من أراه يمتري بمودتي
O you whom I see striding with my affection
لنا مغن صوته
We have a singer whose voice
قام وفي الكف منه كأس
He rose, and in his hand a cup
نحن في النزهة والمتعة
We are out for pleasure and joy
مبدع في شمائل المجد فضلا
Creator of the traits of glory and virtue
تحمل أخاك على ما به
Bear with your brother as he is
من شفيعي إلى البريع البديع
Who will intercede for me with the Bountiful Creator
لا تحرمن كريما ما استطعت ولا
Do not deprive a generous man when you can give
قل لأبي النضر الذي ليس في
Tell Abu al-Nadhr, who there is not amongst people
خلف بن أحمد الأخلاف
The heirs of Ahmad raised high their glorious banners,
صدف الحبيب بوصله
The beloved's intimacy arrived,
أنكحوني أسماعكم إنني أم
Marry me your ears, I am truly a mother,
عفاء على هذا الزمان فإنه
Pardon this time, for it is
أيها البدر الذي يجلو الدجا
O moon that lights up the darkness
تقسم قلبي في هواه فعندهه
My heart is torn in its love for him
له آمر بالرشد في يقظاته
He has a guide to virtue when awake
سألت أبا عليكم نوالا
I asked your father Ali for affection
قل لمن شره يهرول سعيا
Say to him whose evil runs swiftly seeking,
جعلت هديتي لكم سواكا
I have made my gift to be only you
علينا له فاعلم حقوق قضى بها
Rights decreed on us we owe to him, as we
رعى الله دولة كافي الكفاة
May God protect the state of the fully competent,
نصحتك منك نصول الشباب
I advise you, youthful vigor ebbs away
الأرض إلا في ذراك فلا فإن
The earth, except through your particles, will not
لا يغرنك أنني لين اللم
Do not be deceived that I am soft of speech,
عجبت لوغد قد جذبت بضبعه
I'm amazed at a fawn I've tamed with my gaze
مالك من مالك إلا الذي
You own nothing of what you own
والعلم إن كلف الإنسان خدمته
Knowledge, if man devotes himself to serving it
يا من غدا حسنا لوجه زمانه
O you whose beauty adorns the face of time,
بسيف الدولة اتسقت أمور
Through the sword of the state matters are set right
بأبي معانيك الوسيمة إنها
By your meanings' father, so graceful,
كلام الأمير الندب في ثني نظمه
The words of the prince lament in the curve of his poem
شربت على سلامة أفتكين
I drank to the well-being of one I miss
أنا للسيد الشريف غلام
I am the servant of the noble master
لله دهقان أنست بقربه
For God, I became fond of the farmer
تعال إلى الصواني مترعات
Come to the vessels full of wine
إذا انقاد الكلام فقده عفوا
If words comply, then gently let them go
رأيتك تكويني بيمسم ذلة
I saw you shaping my being with a touch of gentleness
وإن عدت لها يوما
If to her I return someday
غلامك يمن أصلح الله شأنه
Your slave is fortunate, may God improve his condition
يخطب ودي وليس كفوا
He woos my love yet cannot match
سام على نسل سام بالجمال له
Descendant of Sam, beautiful in his lineage,
اسم الذي أنا طائعا أفديه
In the name of Him whom I obey though afraid
إذا لم يفتني عقل ودين
If I am not deprived of reason, faith,
ولما رأيت الناس إلا أقلهم

نصحتك جامل الإخوان طرا
I advised you, O beautiful one of companions,
ألم تر المرء طول حياته
Doesn't man spend his lifetime
لا تفزعن من كل شيء مفزع
Do not be frightened by everything frightening
الدهر يلعب بالفتى
Time toys with man
وإذا غنيت فلا تكن بطرا
When you are wealthy, don't be conceited,
بأبي وأمي من شمائله
By my father and mother, he whose attributes
رأيت الناس قد حالوا
I saw the people who have changed
في الناس من تجنيسه تنجيس
Some people's wordplay is profane
ألا أبلغ السلطان عني نصيحة
Should I not convey sincere advice to the Sultan
ما قضى الله كائن لا محاله
What Allah decrees will inevitably come to pass
ولو كنت أنثر ما تستحق
If I were to scatter what you deserve
لقد هنت من طول المقام ومن يقم
I have grown weary from my long stay, and he who stays
يا معشر الكتاب لاتتعرضوا
O community of writers, do not aspire
فكم دقت وشقت واسترقت
How the curiosities of life have knocked and split open
وباشرت أمري واعتنيت بحاجتي
You took care of my affair and tended to my need,
فكم من كواكب تجلو البهيم
How many stars shine bright
من كل معنى يكاد الميت يفهمه
From every meaning nearly dead can grasp
لا تنكرن إهداءنا لك منطقا
Do not deny our dedication of logic to you,
من جعل الصبر في مقاصده
Whoever makes patience his purpose
أنت امرؤ لا ترعوي تائبا
You are a man who does not tend to the repentant
أقول لمن يعلمه المعالي
I say to one who teaches him virtues,
كحية سوداء مجت على
Like a black snake that crept across
ذرني أسر في البلاد مبتغيا
Let me wander through the lands seeking
عين الزمان أصابتنا فلا نظرت
The eye of time has stricken us, it barely glances our way,
إذا حوى فاضل ذو همة نشبا
When an honorable man of high resolve grows up
عدوك إما معلن أو مكاتم
Your enemy is either overt or covert
يا جامع المال كيما يستفيد غنى
O gatherer of wealth, so that you may benefit from riches
يا من غدا طالبا بين الأنام أخا
O you who have become a seeker among people, a brother
نحن إذا غاب أبو قاسم
When Abul Qasim is gone
لا تيأسن فكم ظلام دامس
Do not despair, for how much oppressive darkness
تولاها وليس له عدو
He took care of it, yet he has no enemy,
إذا ما أتاح الله لي قرب منصف
If God grants me a fair-minded friend,
والعيش حلو ولكن لا بقاء له
Life is sweet, but it does not last
وإذا اصطنعت يدا فراع ثلاثة
When you craft a hand, heed three things:
البين بين أشجاني وأشجاني
Separation made evident my sorrows and my sorrows
أغث أيها الشيخ الوزير فإنني
O Sheikh the Minister, come to my aid, for
وسائل الناس شتى عند سادتهم
The people's means are diverse with their masters
أمسى أبو حسن كسلان وهو فتى
Last night, Abu Hasan turned lazy, though he is a young man.
أبا قاسم كم ظالم متعجرف
O Abu Qasim, how many unjust and arrogant oppressors
قدم لنفسك خيرا
Present good for yourself
من كان يبغي علو الذكر والشرفا
Whoever yearns for glory and renown
يا فقيد المثل لا فينا ولكن
O one of matchless virtues, not in us,
ظفر بن عبد الله أكرم
Zafar son of Abdullah is more generous
إذا اتخذت أخا فاسبر خلائقه فإن
If you take a brother, then observe his character, for
تق الله والزم هدى دينه
Obey God and adhere to the guidance of His religion
كتب الأمير كتائب في المعركه
The prince's writings were regiments in battle
رأيت حياة المرء مثل مماته
I saw a man's life like his death
إذا أنا لم أمدد إلى بركم يدي
If I do not extend my hand to your righteousness
لله في خلقه قضايا
God's decrees in His creation
يا صاعدا في جو طير شامخ
O you who ascend in towering skies
قلت للقلب من دهاك أجبني
I said to my heart, who has made you fall in love, tell me
بأبي أخوة ترحلت عنهم
By my father, brothers with whom I journeyed
كم مذنب قد ضافني
How many sinners have wronged me,
يا حسن لذة أيام لنا سلفت
O the bliss of days gone by for us,
ولما سقاني صرف الهموم
When worries poured their bitterness over me,
عليك بمطبوخ النبيذ فإنه
Partake of fermented wine, for it
عجبت من أمر فطيع قد حدث
I marveled at the matter of obedient Fatiq, newly occurring
أقول لمن لاح المشيب بفوده
I say to him whose temple grey hairs streak:
يا من يخاطب قومه ليقودهم
O you who address your people to lead them
والماء ليس عجيبا أن أعذبه
It is no wonder that the sweetest water
أشفق على الدرهم والعين
Have mercy on the coin and the eye;
عذرتك يا إنسان إن كنت مغرما
I excuse you, O man, if you are infatuated
وإذا سموت إلى المعالي فاخترط
When you aspire to glory, be resolute,
الفقه فقه أبي حنيفة وحده
The creed is the creed of Abu Hanifa alone
أيا قاطعا للوصل بيني وبينه
O you who severed the bond between me and him
أرى بصري يعيا ويبطؤ فعله
My sight grows weary and weak in its action
كأن فاها إذا ما الراح قبلها
Her mouth is like carnelian whenever the breeze kisses it
بنو فريغون قوم في وجوههم
The sons of Freigoun are a people with
ألا قل لتاج الملك سيدنا نضر
O say to the crown of the kingdom, our master Naḍr,
يا من تبجح بالدنيا وزخرفها
O you who boast of this world and its splendor
ولا غرو أن يمنى أديب بجاهل
It's no surprise if a scholar is well-regarded by the ignorant,
أرى المال يفنيه ويبلي جديده
I see wealth destroying and wearing out its novelty
ألقى الرجاء بعينيه ويمنعه
He cast hope with his eyes, yet it was denied him,
إني أرى صاحب السلطان في ظلم
I see the friend of the sultan in darkness
إذا أحببت أن تحظى بسحر
If you wish to be blessed with magic
يا مخلف الميعاد كم تجفوني
O you who break promises, how much do you spurn me
وغزال كل من شبهه
Each one who likened a gazelle to
قل للذي سد الثغور لأنها
Tell the one who closed the gaps, for in them
فديتك يا محمد من كريم
I ransom you, O Muhammad, from a generous one
لا تحسبني إذا أوليتني نعما
Do not think if you grant me kindness
أيا من يرى بين الأنام أهم ما
Oh who is seen among people as most
صديق لنا شكره غائب
A friend whose thanks are absent
كل صعود إلى هبوط
Every rise leads to a fall
خذوا بدمي هذا الغلام فإنه
Take this boy for my blood price, for he
أكثر الناس إذا جربت
When most people are led astray
إن المودة حدها
The limit of affection
المرء بالهمة والتجمل
A man is known by his aspirations, not by
إذا خدم السلطان قوم ليسرفوا
If a people serve a ruler to excess
أقرب الناس بالكرام بعيد
The kindest people are far from kindness
أخو الإنسان من واساه فيما
The brother of mankind is he who consoles him
رب ليل أغمد الأنوار إلا نور
Many a night when lights are extinguished
سبحان من سخر الأقوام كلهم
Glorious is He who made all people serve each other
يا قلب لا تستشعر الأحزانا
O heart, do not feel sad
معاناتك الأشغال من غير طائل
Your suffering with futile toil
فديتك قد وعدت فقل صريحا
I ransomed you, you promised, so speak candidly
وشادن وجهه نهار
His radiant face shines like daybreak,
أفدي الذي كل جزء من محاسنه
I ransom with my soul the one whose every part
أبرزت وجها كلاذا
She showed her face, why so?
إذا نقل الراوون قولا ولم يكن
If the narrator conveys a saying, yet he is not
فديتك ليس ما أوليت بكرا
I have redeemed you, not for what you first bestowed
فديتك ما قصرت فيما وشيته
I devoted myself, I did not fall short in what you assigned
جنى لحظ عيني من محاسن وجهه
My gaze reaped the beauty of his face
أيها الخاطبون شكرا كريما
O you who give speeches, many thanks
يا ناظر العين قل هل ناظرىعيني
O watcher of the eye, say, does an eye of mine
يا غالب الناس بعدوانه
O conqueror of people through oppression
لما توليت الأمور وأظلمت
When I took charge of affairs and it darkened
كتبت فلم يجبني عن كتابي
I wrote to him, but no reply came back
تجنب مجالس أهل الفساد
Avoid the gatherings of the corrupt people
أفدي الغزال الذي في النحو كلمني
I would sacrifice for the gazelle whose speech in grammar addressed me,
تعاطى الفتى ما ليس يعنيه تاركا
The youth indulged in what did not concern him
يا من أعاد رميم الملك منشورا
O you who returned the tattered kingdom reassembled
يقولون ذكر المرء يبقى بنسله
They say a man's memory remains through his offspring
كل قليلا تعش طولا وتسلم
Eat little, you will live long and be safe
إذا خذل المرء من نفسه
When a man is forsaken by himself
أرأيت ما قد قال لي بدر الدجى
Have you heard what the full moon said to me
سقى الله حرا رعى عهدنا
God watered the free and grazed our covenant
قل للذي غرته عزة ملكه
Tell him whom the pride of his kingdom has deceived,
وشادن أبصرته مقبلا
When I saw him approaching,
إذا ما اصطنعت امرأ فليكن
If you win a noble woman let her be
لما أتاني كتاب منك مبتسم
When your letter came to me, smiling
فديتك عز الصديق الصدوق
I give my life for you, friend
أبو حسن عليل ذو خداع
Abu Hasan is sickly, full of guile
أرقت حتى حسبت عيني
I stayed awake until I thought
لا تلمني على اضطراب تراه
Blame me not for the unrest you see
تصفحت أيام الزمان بفكرة
I browsed the days of time with a thought
تكلم وسدد ما استطعت فإنما
Speak and aim as best as you can, for
كم قد أغار قوي حبل فغادره
How a strong rope was envied when abandoned,
أبا أحمد شعري قتيل مواعد
O Abu Ahmed, my poetry mourns the slain,
ومن عجب أتيتك شافعا
And how strange that I’ve come pleading
شكوت إليه الحب كيما يقل من
I complained to him of love, so that he might quench
لا انس إلا في مجالس تلتقي
I find joy in gatherings where
إذا قيض الله أمرا دنت
When Allah decrees a matter,
وخر لضما أوليت شكري ساجدا
I offer my thanks, bowing down on my knees,
ومن الدليل على انتكاس أمورنا
Among the evidence that our affairs are declining
يا ليت شعري ماذا عدا وبدا
Oh, if only I knew what changed and passed away,
وما الدهر إلا ما مضى فهو فائت
Time's but what's past, once gone, for aye afar,
ولما خاب حسن الظن فيكم
When beauty's hope in you was lost
إن أسيافنا العضاب الدوامي
Our sharp and everlasting swords
قامت تريد الرواح وهنا
She rose up wanting to depart weakly
كتابك سيدي جلي همومي
Your book, my lord, dispelled my worries,
إذا خدمت الملوك فالبس
If you serve kings, then wear
لقاء أكثر من يلقاك أوزار
Meeting more of those who meet you are burdens,
أغثني وأحسن واكشف الضر عن أخ
Help me, be kind, and remove harm from a brother
ونحن أناس لا نذل لجانف
We are a people who bow to no oppressor,
وإن هممت بأمر
If you attempt something
قد جمع الله أربعا لي
God has granted me four blessings
أنست بأيام الشباب وظلها
I enjoyed the days of youth and their shade
إذا قرأت كتاب الله فاتبع
When you read the book of God then follow
إذا شئت أن تصطاد حب أخي لب
If you wish to ensnare a dear one's love
هل منعم في الناس أو مفضل
Is there a generous or superior man
إلى حتفي سعى قدمي
My feet hastened to my doom,
إلى الله أشكو اتصال الخطوب
To God I complain of the persistence of sorrows,
عزلت سمعي وشمي والمذاق معا
I've closed off hearing, smell, taste all together
لا تعتبن على الزمان وصرفه
Blame not the turns of Fate, while yet thy edge
البين بين أشجاني وأشجاني
Separation made clear my passions and my passions
توق معاداة الرجال فإنها
Avoid the enmity of men, for verily it
سرورك بالدنيا غرور فلا تكن
Your joy with this world is an illusion, so do not
يا سيد الأمراء يا من جوده
O prince of princes, O you whose generosity
إذا خمدت أنوار نفسك فاعتمد
If the lights of your soul are extinguished
عندي فديتك سادة أحرار
I have loyal free men who yearn for you,
وليس له ذكر إذا لم يكن نسل
They say a man's memory lives on in his progeny
وللخود مني ساعة ثم بيننا
My cheeks had an hour with you, then between us
ذو الفضل في دنياه محسود
The virtuous in this life are envied
ألا لا تتخذ إلا كريما
Do not take as a friend anyone but the noble,
أولى عدو بان يطالبه
The most worthy enemy for the wise man to challenge
إن فاتنا الورد زمانا فقد
If we missed the roses at one time
وقائل كيف بها جزتما
A critic asked how I could bear with her
بنفسي أخ نفسه أمة
With my soul a brother his soul a nation
إذا شئت أن تلقى حسودك راغما
If you wish to defeat your envious enemies,
قلت له ماذا السواد الذي
I said to him, "What is that blackness
لنا حاكم فيه انخناث وإنه
We have a ruler who is effeminate, and he
فهمت كتابك يا سيدي
I understood your book, my master
أخ كان لي وهو الحليف المساعد
A brother who was my ally and helper
لا تعظمن عليك مدحة خادم
Do not take it amiss if a servant praise fall short of your merits;
أسأت إلى نفسي وطامنت من قدري
I did wrong unto myself and was at ease with my fate
اعرف زمانك واقبل ما يجود به
Know your time and accept what it offers generously
إذا اقتسمت أقاليم المعالي
When the realms of glory are apportioned
ألذ من رشف رضاب الحور
Sweeter than sipping from fountains of the fair,
كأنما النيلوفر الغض إذ
As if the tender blue water lilies
مررت بأمردين فقلت زورا
I passed by two demons and said good morning
صديق لنا ليس في قوله
A friend of ours, in his words and deeds, if you examine them closely, you will find no crookedness.
وبصير بمعاني الشعر
With deep insight into poetry’s meanings
خذ العفو وأمر بعرف كما
Take the pardon and command with kindness as
يا من يشاور في الأمور تهمه
O you who consults with trusted advisors
مبدع في شمائل المجد حتما
An excellent poet in virtues of glory assuredly
مضى المزني الذي لم يزل
The generous man who never ceased
لقد راعني بدر السما بصدوده
The full moon disturbed me with its brightness
ألا ليت شعري كيف أصبح طائري
Alas, how I wish I knew how my bird
إن إخواننا الألى سبقونا
Our beloved friends preceded us
محمد بن حامد إذا ارتجل
Muhammad bin Hamid when he improvised
إذا توسلت إلى حاجة
If you plead for a need,
يا من يرى خدمة السلطان عدته
O you who see serving the sultan as your asset
قالوا رضيت بدون حقك والغنى
They said you were content without your rights or wealth
أخ لي أما خلقه فمطهم
I have a brother, though his manner is fierce
خل الأنام وما قالوا ومالمزوا
Disregard what people say and find fault with,
وغزالة غازلتها
I flirted with a gazelle
أجرني من دهر أساء جواره
Save me from a time whose neighborhood was cruel,
أتاني اليوم من كافي الكفاة
Today I received from the most competent writer
يا من يضيع عمره
O you who squanders his life
أيا جامع المال من حله
O collector of money, lawful and unlawful,
قل للذي حرم بذل الندى
Say to the one who forbade the giving of generosity
هل أنت شار لنفسي من رسيس جوى
Are you my soul's remedy from the torments of love
قصدتك أركب البيد القفار
I sought you out, riding my camel through the barren desert,
يوم له فضل على الأيام
A day that excels over days
قل للذي لايزال يجني
Say to he who still reaps
بلاغة كاتب السلطان فاعلم
The eloquence of the sultan's scribe, know it well,
رميتك عن حكم القضاء بنظرة
I cast you out by a glance, I rebel
إذا غدا ملك باللهو مشتغلا
If a king is busy with frivolity,
قلت لما غدوت صدرا وأضحى
I said, when you rose high and throngs of people
أبو روح أدام الله عزه
Abu Rawh whom may God preserve his glory
إذا وليت فاعمر ما تليه
If you are appointed ruler, then instill justice
أحمد ربي على ضياء
Ahmad is my Lord, from whom I drew light
ولما رأيت الدهر فوق نبله
When I saw Time raise his arrows
دعني فلن أخلق ديباجتي
Let me be, for I shall not make my brocade
سل الله الغني تسأل جوادا
Ask God the Rich, do not ask any man
فديتك كم غيظ كظمت وكم ترى
I ransom you, how much anger I swallowed, and how much
أبا العباس لا تحسب بأني
Abu al-Abbas, do not think that I
شيخ لنا يقطعنا عرضه
An elder who would deny us his company
إذا ضاق أمر فارج ربك إنه
When hardship comes your way, turn to your Lord, for He
ترحلت عنك لفرط الشقاء
I departed from you out of excessive misfortune
نصحتك لا تصحب سوى كل فاضل
I advised you, do not befriend any but the noble,
إذا استشرت امرأ فاسبر له أبدا
If you consult a man, be patient with him forever
تكثرت بالأموال جهلا وإنما
You amassed wealth in ignorance, though
فديت الذي أنا عبد له
I ransom with my soul, my being, my toil and my destiny
كالشمس نورا ولكن ماله لهب
Like the sun in its light, though it has no flame
قل للوزير الذي أضحت خلائقه
Tell the minister, whose qualities
لا يسوءنك إن براني
Do not let it hurt you if one day
خمسين عاما كنت أملتها
For fifty years I had wished for them,
نحن والله في زمان سفيه
By God, we live in foolish times
بئس شعار الرجل الشعاره
How wretched is the motto of a man whose poverty shames him,
وللمرء أضداد يرومون قسره
A man has foes who seek to do him ill,
عظمت طيبك لما نلت منزلة
You magnify your generosity when you attain high rank,
وذات دل إذا لاحظت صورتها
When you see the image of a tender one,
أتاني كتاب منك يقصر دونه
A letter came to me from you, beneath which
دع الدمن القفار لمن بكاها
Leave the barren valleys to those who weep for them,
أبلغ مقالي كل عاف مجتدي
Convey my words to every wise and studious one,
أما حان أن يشتفي المستهام
Has not the time come for the enraptured
أهبت بأشعاري إلى السيد الندب
I offered my poems to the lord of lament
لئن كذبت ظنوني في مقامي
If my suspicions at my station proved false
أبا سليمانكم أوليت من حسن
Oh Abu Sulaiman, how much goodness you have granted me,
أحرك بالتذكير قوما لعلله
I stir a people with remembrance, perhaps
ما كنت أحسب أن عمرا يذنب
مواعيده في الوصل أحلام نائم
أرى هذي المقادير
للناس فيما يطلبون وسائل
عاجلت ثوب علاك بالتوسيخ
إذا ما جاد بالأموال ثنى
إن أكن مذنبا فعفو إلهي
وزارة بست وزرها قاصم الظهر
لي جار فيه حيره
أخ لي جربته مرة
أتيتك أشكو ريب دهري فانتصر
أرى المرء يرجو أن يطول بقاؤه
وإذا ضمت الكفاية قوما
حتام أقتل تهديدا وترهيبا
لا تحسبني مشهدا ومغيبا
وأخلق خلق الله بالذل تائه
إذا دهى خطب فآراؤه
إذا ما انجلى الرأي فاحكم به
إن لم تكن نيتي مصورة
إن الذي آثرته بمودتي
الحر في التحقيق معتق ذاته
ودعت حبي وفي يدي يده
يامن يؤمل في دنياه عافية
ومهفهف غنج الشمائل أزعجت
إذا أنت لم تحسن إلى غير شاكر
ياغزالا أراه ندا وضدا
بنيسابور سادات كرام
دع دموعي يسلن سيلا بدار
عليك بالعدل إن وليت مملكة
أما في الناس مرتاد لحمد
أبا الفتح إن ناصحت نفسك لم تبع
من وجهه يطلع نجم المشتري
قالوا مشيبك قد تبسم ضاحكا
وما فقر قفر طال بالرى عهده
ما أنصفت بغداد حين توحشت
لا تحقر المرء إن رأيت به
إذا ما هممت بكشف الظلم
رغيفك في الأمن يا سيدي
تقنع بالكفاية فهي أولي
فأتى وفاؤك وهو أنس ناضر
من عذيري من عذول في قمر
طرا علي وقد نام الورى طاري
يا أكثر الناس إحسانا إلى الناس
أقول وروعي للفراق مروع
لا تعتبن ولا تخدعك بارقة
تنازع الناس في الصوفي واختلفوا
قلت له لما قضى نحبه
سكوتي ليس ينقص منك فضلا
ويمطر في سحاب الخد خلا
وكل غنى يتيه به غني
يا سيدا يروي الصدري رأيه
سر الفتى دمه فلينظرن له
أراني الله وجهك كل يوم
إذا نسي الناس إخوانهم
صددتم بلا جرم فجور صدودكم
إذا أبصرت في لفظي فتورا
أوصِلاني إلى المنى أوصِلاني
رفقا بصب له في طرفه طرف
بأبي من أدار من عينيه
قل لمن أوتي الجمال
قد قلت لما أن سمعت بقترة
مدحتك للضرورة لا لأني
لقاؤك يدني منى المرتجي
زفت إليك لنا عرائس أربع
عودي وماء شبيبتي في عودي
معان كالعيون ملئن سحرا
ليس الكواكب في الظلماء أحسن من
وشادن معتدل قده
أخ لي لفظة در
إذا لم يكن إغضاء عين على قذى
فلما دفنا جسمه في ترابه
كأن الغصون وقد أثقلت
لنا صديق خير أحواله
أرى جلنارا قلوب الورى
ولم أر مثل الشكر جنة غارس
كأنني فرس الشطرنجليس له
فديت أبا نصر المرتجى
بأبي من شفى فؤادا عليلا
أضاء ليل في أضاليلي
ومهفهف يسعى بكأس مدامة
قالت وقد راودتها عن قبلة
وشادن قلت له
إذا أقسم الأبطال يوما بسيفهم
تأخرت عن قوم ولا غرو أنني
يقولون كم تشقى بدرس تديمه
إن لي في الهوى لسانا كتوما
إذا استقبحت أمرا فاجتنيه
إذا أرتجت أبواب قوم أراذل
فصرت أضيع من لحم على وضم
رضيت بعيش كفاف حلال
تعرض للكتابة يدعيها
أخ يتشكى سوء حالك عنده
أهل هذا الزمان عند العان
كنت في نعمة وظل رخاء
إذا كنت متخذا صاحبا
إذا جدد الرحمن عندك نعمة
قلت لطرف الطبع لما جرى
إن الذي مر بنا مسرعا
فلا تعتبني إذا ما مزحت
لا تعصين شمس العلا قابوسا
ولا تغترر بي إذا ما طربت
وقالوا فعظم قدره ومحله
كنت فيما مضى أفدي بنانا
قل للذي يرجة ثبات مودتي
يا قومإني جائع
من كان في الحشر له شافع
رب يوم للعيش فيه رفاغ
رأي الإمام أبي حنيفة
لا تيأسن لعسرة فوراءها
لو قال للسيل وهو منحدر
يامن يشافهه النصيح بنصحه
عفاف الفتى خير أوصافه
لا تنكرن إذا أهديت نحوك من
قل للذي خص بالحسنى أبا حسن
أقول وخير القول مالا يشوبه
بان وذكراه ما تفارقني
والله لو أنهم أتوني
هبك ابتليت بفقر
قولا لمنى قلبي إسماعيلا
توكل على الله في كل
مدحتهم دهرا فلم أر منهم
أقل نوال منك يجبر إقلالي
فأولى النصول بأن تتقى
إن تجد في رضابه سلسبيلا
ياليت شِعري هل أرى حضرة
إذا ما جاد بالأموال ثنى
إن أسيافنا الغضاب الدوامي
وإني لنظام القوافي بفطنتي
أبا نصر نصرت على الأعادي
أرى الناس قد سنوا عيادة كل من
قل لمن رام سموا وعلامه
يقولون مالك لاتقتني
يل من يؤمل أن يعيش مسلما
يا خادم الجسم كم تشقى بخدمته
أبصرت رشدي فلا أشكو أذى المحن
بقية العمر ما عندي لها ثمن
صون الفتى عقله ودينه
نصيبك من سفيه أو فقيه
زيادة المرء في دنياه نقصان
مررت بأمردين فقلت زورا
ضج من نتن ريقك المكان
أوان أنت في هذا الأوان
أقلل زيارة من يحبك
لئن سممني الله
وثقت برببي وفوضت أمري
لما رأوني فريدا حلس زاوية
مثال المال إذ يربو ويزكو
العمر ما عمرت في
الناس أشكال فمن يك راشدا
توق من الليالي واجتنبها
بكت إذ رأتني من حلى المال عاريا
أنست بأيام الشباب وظلها
أنست بأيام الشباب وظلها
لا تجزعن لدار أقفرت وخلت
أراح الله من زمان
كل يرتقى إليه بوهم
إن عبد العزيز شيخ
بأبي نظمك الذي جل قدرا
يأيها الذاهب في مكره
أبوك حوى العليا وأنت مبرز
إذا ما سقى الله البلاد وأهلها
جرى رسم الأحبة إن ناوا
ترجو بقاء دائما سرمدا
علي بها لاكنار الخليل
ولا تعول على شخص له عمم
بدا مستدق الجانبين كأنما
إذا ازدرى ساقط كريما
علامة شكر المرء إعلان حمده
يا قوم أرعوني أسماعكم
أبا القاسم استعبدت ودي
دعاني إلى بيته سيد
يمن علي بلا طائل
كم نظمنا عقود لهو وأنس
ما همتي غير أن أحظى بواحدة
كان ينابيع الثرى ثدي مرضع
لله نيسابور من حله
قل للوزير الكريم قولا
زرع المحبة في الضمائر كلها
مضى الصاحب الكافي ولم يبق بعده
أضحى الفقيه فقيه بست كودنا
إنا أناس سابقون إلى العلى
قل للأمير أدام ربي عزه
قد أولع الناس بالتلاق
لا تجفون أخا إذا أبصرته
رأوا بزتي فقضوا أنني
إني على ما بي من قوة
إذا الليم مط حاجببيه
إذا لم يكن للمرء نفس كريمة
يا من له في كل شيء رغبة
رأيتك لا تهوى سوى المجد والعلى
إذا أحببت أن تبقى
بنيت القصور رجاء الخلود
يا للرجال لأمر جل مفظعه
إن كنت ترغب في السعادة
