والعلم إن كلف الإنسان خدمته

1. Knowledge, if man devotes himself to serving it
Will make the free people of the world its servants

١. والعلِمُ إنْ كِلفَ الإنسانُ خِدمَتَهُ
فسوف يجعَلُ أحرارَ الورى خَدمَهْ

2. And he who built his worth on glory and inherited it
From his ancestors, not his in-laws, has demolished it

٢. ومَنْ بنى قدرَهُ بالمَجدِ وَرَّثهُ
أسلافُهُ لا بعُلياهُ فقدْ هَدَمَهْ

3. He who recklessly collided with fate overestimating his strength
Judge him as one whom fate has collided with

٣. مَنْ صادَمَ الدَّهَر مُغتَرَاً بقُوَّتِهِ
فاحكُمْ علَيهِ بأنَّ الدَّهرَ قد صَدَمَهْ

4. And he who socializes with wicked peers
Will regret their fellowship brought him shorter

٤. ومَنْ يُبِحْ قُرَناءَ السُّوءِ عِشرَتَهُ
يكُنْ قُصاراهُ مِن إيناسِهِمْ نَدَمَهْ

5. How many an existence, if you examine its image
You find its absence nobler than its yield

٥. كَم من وَجودٍ إذا استَوْضَحْتَ صورَتَهُ
رأيْتَ أشرفَ مِن مَحصولِهِ عَدَمَهْ

6. And everyone with nobility, if not for his virtues
Of merits, would equal his head and his foot

٦. وُكلُّ ذي شَرَفٍ لولا خَصائصُهُ
مِنَ الفضائلِ ساوى رأسُهُ قَدَمَهْ

7. And how often the learned kisses the cheek of a lad
Whose orbit of days has served him

٧. وكَمْ يُقَبِّلُ ذو التَّحصيلِ خَدَّ فتىً
مِنَ مداراتُهُ أيامَّهُ خَدَمَهْ

8. Fear most the one whose ignorance you think
Is a dam, when he is a rat who has demolished it

٨. أولى الُّغورِ بأنْ تُخشى مَعَرَّتُهُ
ئغرٌ يظنّ بعضٌ أنَّهُ رَدَمَهْ

9. Yes, and the sweetest taste you relish
Is a face that has savored life and let it intoxicate him

٩. نَعمْ وأحلى مذاقٍ تَستلِذُّ بهِ
وَجهٌ تشرَّبَ طَعْمَ العَيشِ وائتَدَمَهْ
