يا من أزالو بالضنا
O you who have removed with disdain
على كل عين من الخلق عين
On every eye of creation there is an eye
العقل في جوهره واحد
The intellect in its essence is one
للحق في كل وجه
Truth has a radiant face
تجلت فانجلى نجمي وبدري
My moon and my sun and my star
ليس وصف الفضل فضلا
Describing merit is no merit
ما أومض البرق بين الطلع والبان
Whenever lightning flashed between the hills and dales
تعالت ذات مولاي
My Master's essence transcends
بدت لعيني بالستور والكلل
She appeared to my eyes behind the veil and the locks
لمغيب قلبي في هواكم مشهد
My heart is enraptured by your love,
سفهاء قومي في المحبة سفهوا
My people were foolish in love, they acted foolishly
وأحوى قد حوى مهج البرايا
And he who yearned has yearned for the wilderness of the desert
أرضى وإن سخط العذول علي من
I would be content though the jealous found fault with me because of
لبانتنا هواك وما لبينى
Our hearts have fallen for you, though we have no intimacy with you
يعن لطالب الدنيا ثلاث
Three things torment the seeker of this world:
من لي بوصل ممنع قطعت يدي
Who granted me union with the beloved who was forbidden to me, whom the swords of my eyelids cut off my hand from reaching?
من سره الإحسان منه وساءه
Whoever is pleased by kindness from him, and dislikes
ما زلت أنكر بعد عرفان الهوى
I still deny, after knowing love
ولولا لجام الطالبيين في فمي
Were it not for the bridle of critics in my mouth
لما دعاني الهوى من ربة الكلل
When passion called me from the land of Khlal
بحث المحق مع العنيد لقوله
Seeking truth with the obstinate because of his words
قلت للغائبين عن مشهدي فيك
I said to those absent from my presence in you
أحلى من الإنجاز وعد مماطل
Sweet is the promise of the dallying lover;
غايت وجدي في هواك
My ultimate desire in your love
زينة الفقر في العفاف وحق العلم
The beauty of poverty is in chastity
قوم بهم شفع الإله رسوله
A people God interceded through them His Messenger
عودوا يعد بكم الزمان الماضي
The past time promises your return
تفرق الغاوون في حبكم
The misguided differ in their love of you
أراني البعض في بعضي
Some see parts of me in others
حتام بالأعراض عن جوره
Hattam turns away from his tyranny
إلى نار سوى نار
To a fire other than your fire
ولو لم يعدني طيف لمياء في القلى
And if the ghost of Layla did not return to me in dreams
لو كانت النفس بالآلات مدركة
If the soul could perceive with instruments
أنزه العين عن علم يصوره
I clear my eyes of knowledge portrayed as destiny
تالله ما آمن بالله من
By Allah, he did not believe in Allah, he who
كل المحاسن جزء حسن محمد
All beauty's graces are Muhammad's traits
صقال سوالف وجه الحبيب
Polishing the tales of my beloved's face
وما ساءني جهل العمي برتبتي
I could not dwell on my ignorance
لو كان بارئنا تعالى
If God did not will
كلما استنفذت قلبي من هوى
Whenever I exhaust my heart of passion
إن لم تقم على غرامي فيكم
If you do not stand witness to my passion
ولو كانت إرادته تعالى
Even if His will, exalted is He,
متى ينشق عن جسدي الضريح
When will the shroud split from my body
لي حديث هو القديم الصحيح
I have for you an ancient truth, clear to the wise
كم مقعد قلت قم فأضحى
How many seats have I said, "Stand up," then they walk at dawn
أدبر ليلي ودنا الصبح
The night has turned its back and dawn drew near
إن الذي عاينته
What mine eyes have seen
يا راقدا في جهله
O sleeper in his ignorance
أي طب لداء دار حماها
What cure is there for the ills of a house whose guardian
تدبر ما أصاب تجدك قوم
Ponder what has befallen you, you will find a people
حجب العمى أهل الهوى عن رشدهم
The blindness of passion hid from the lovers their right course,
إن الذي تيمني قربه
He whose nearness has brought me good fortune
من لم يفارق الكتاب
He who the Book forsakes not
لقد قبض اليأس بسط الرجا
Hope has grasped despair, outstretched is hope,
عليك اتكالي إله الورى
On you I rely, God of the worlds
صمت اللبيب يزينه
The silence of the wise adorns him
يا ولي الخير لا تبخ
O dispenser of good, do not begrudge
إن لم يعدني في قلاكم عائد
If you do not promise me a return in your hearts
في شرق اسم الحب أهل الهوى
In the east of the name of love, the people of passion
كل يراك كعينه
Each sees you as his eye
بنى العقل هبوا لأمر عجاب
The mind built up, they rallied for a wondrous cause
إليك أنسي بناسي زاد إيحاشي
To you I confide my people's supplies to enliven me,
أثبت ما عاينت من نحوها
I confirm what I have seen of her beauty
عند ولي الخير شر العباد
The evil of God's servants is with the benevolent
فهم الشعر الذي أقرب معناه
My understanding of poetry, whose meaning I convey
بي للورى فليطل العجب
To the ignorant I am a wonder;
متى كان للصب في مذهب الهوى
When did passion ever find
شربت من الحميا ما سقتني
I drank from the wine as much as was poured for me
بسكري صحوي في هوى من أحبه
I wake from my intoxication into the passion of the one I love
داء ثوى بفؤاد شفه سقم
A lingering malady consumed my heart as it afflicted me
تفرق عني العاذلون وأجمعوا
My censurers have left me, all agreeing
ألحزم زين للفتى
Prudence adorns the youth
واحيرتي عنك إذا لم تزد
My bewilderment about you only grows
جهل القياس وفاته القصد
He erred in his metaphor and missed the mark
عبيد اللات فيما جاء عنهم
The polytheists in their misguided ways
ومقام أرباب الغرام وذلة الشاكي
The abode of lovers consumed by passion, and the humility of the plaintive one
ما كابر الحس مثل قوم
No arrogance was greater than a people
ولو لم تبد لي منك
Even if you did not reveal to me
إن التي سمحت لنا بوصالها
She who allowed us to meet her
يا غادرين بمن وفي
O you who deserted the faithful one
عذلوا ولو وجدوا بكم وجدي
They reproached me, even if they found delight in you
أيماري من لا رأى طيف سعدى
Whoever did not see the phantom of happiness
لا يوحشنك في طري
Let not the fewness of its people dismay thee on the path of truth;
قل لمن قال إن باري البرايا
Tell those who claim the Maker of all things
إذا المولى لعبد صار سمعا
When my Master becomes for His servant hearing, sight,
يا ملهمي نفسي الغرام بحبمم
O my inspirer, who inspired my soul with love for you
إذا عصم التمسك من ظلال
When holding fast to the Family of the House saves from shadows
تبدى كالهلال وصار بدرا
He appeared like the crescent and became full moon
سوى حبكم يسلى وغيري له يسلو
None but your love consoles me, though others have solace
لو كان ما زخرفوا وقالوا
If what they embellished and said
أنا والورى باسم الهوى سيان
I and the world for love's name, we are the same
وعن طرب أصفق إذ تغني
I applaud your singing joyfully,
أيسرني أني أسمى طائعا
Does it please me that I am called obedient,
تبصر بنور الحق تلق حقيقة
With truth's light you have gained insight and grasped reality
ضلوا وقد ظنوا الهدى عندهم
They went astray though they thought they were guided
ذكر الفتى آية نسيانه
The youth's mention is a sign of his being forgotten
لو أن روحي يستتم نعيمها
If my soul could complete her bliss
ظهور الحق في العالم
The emergence of truth in the world
عرفت الخلق والأمر
I knew mankind and command
وراي عين أمامي
My vision before me
فنى وجودي في وجود الهوى
My existence has passed away in the existence of passion,
دور الوجود لعيني
The cycles of existence are
قليل بالورى مثلي
Few in the world are like me,
رب حسن من النفوس قريب
Many beauties in souls are near
وآجيرة جاءت بحسن مبدع
She came with inspiring beauty
توهم الجاهل المغرور عن سفه
The ignorant, deluded fool out of folly
قل لمن رام للشريعة تتميما
Say to those who attempt to supplement the Law,
بعدا لقوم جهلهم جهل ذي ال
Away with a people whose ignorance is the ignorance
إذا كان شرع الله في الدين واحدا
If God's law in religion is one
إذا كان الخلا منه محالا
If being devoid of Him is impossible,
معنى المعاني اسمه ظاهر
The meaning of meanings is His manifest Name
وهبت اشتهاري في هواك صبابتي
I sacrificed my reputation in your love, my youth,
لا ولا في الهوى يصح لمن لا
No, nor in passion's realm can he succeed
الحال في غيب المشاهد ستره
The state in the unseen of witnesses veils it
ولما رأيت العقل يقضي لربه
When I saw that reason decrees for its Lord
ومهفهف بالفرق منفرد
With their light fluttering alone
أبو طالب كفل المصطفى
Abu Talib was the guardian of Mustafa
تعالت ذات مولاي
My Lord's essence transcends
شمسان خالهما الندامى أربعا
Two suns whose blemish regrets have made fourfold
أي وجد بين الورى مثل وجدي
My heart's passion no other can comprehend
يمينا بما أوليت من خالص الولا
By the right you gave me when you bound me with the ties of faithfulness,
قلت عندي وعندكم عمن
I said, with me and with you, about whom
أيا من حبه حالي
Oh you who's love is my present
رض النفس بالصبر الجميل على الأذى
Be content with patience in the face of hurt
رشا عجبي منه وقد راح قاضيا
How strange he takes no bribes, and still a judge
أراقبه في حالة الخوف والرجا
I watch him in fear and hope
شرفي وعزي أنكم
My honor and glory is that you
ليت حادي مطيهم يوم سار
I wish their guide on the day they departed
يأتي الرسول إلى البعيد من ال
The messenger comes to the one far, far away
نهاية الجهل اجتهاد الفتى
The end of ignorance is a young man's effort
إن الذي أوجدني حسنه
The one who created me, his beauty
لست بذي وجد إذا
I'm not one to despair when
قوامك العادل المفدى
Your upright beauty leans to me
وعذار ثنى عذا
With promises he bent a supple bough
عاب لما غاب عن مشهد قلبي
When he was absent from the sight of my heart
كن مع الحق كيف كان عيانا
Be with the truth no matter how it appears
لأحمد في الذكر وصف عظيم
Ahmad is greatly praised in remembrance
لا حظ بالفوز لصب بكم
No luck in winning for one infatuated with you
أين تهوي قدمي عن ذي الهوى
Where do my feet wander from the one I adore
أشكو إلى الله جهل قوم
I complain to God of the ignorance of a people
ذكر ربي لغيره أنساني
My remembrance of my Lord is made pleasant by others
علق الفؤاد بحب ظبي لاعب
My heart is captivated by the love of a frolicking gazelle
فنيت بوجدي عن وجدي فدام لي
I was annihilated in my love, yet my love endured,
يمثل هوى قلبي يليق التبهرج
My heart's passion suits frivolity,
حروف هوى ثلاث من ثلاث
Three letters of passion, by my father's life
بروحي من أرتني حين زارت
With my soul I saw her when she came visiting
فناؤنا مع ثبوت واهبنا
Our passing is with the permanence of our Giver
بصري أراني النور نارا والضحى
My sight has shown me light to be fire, and dawn
متى للحق حققتا
When will you two fulfill the right
ظننت حسبت خلت زعمت أن قد
I thought, I supposed, I imagined, I claimed that I had
يا من كلفت بحبه إذ كان عن
O you whom I was charged with loving though you were
آمنت بالعجز وبالمعجز
I have faith in powerlessness and in the Miraculous
تجلى الحق بالخلق
The truth was manifested in creation
برق الكرى أهدى لعيني الأبرقا
The lightning of the lands brought light to my eyes,
لولا الهوى ما هوى في النار من أحد
Without passion none would have fallen into fire
ولو أن قومي شاهدوا فيك مشهدي
If only my people could see in you what I see
أنا ملآن بحبي
I am filled with my love
الشوق أكثر من أن
Longing is too great to be
لي في خلوتي بجلوة محبوبي
In my solitude with the beauty of my beloved
شبهت فرق الحبيب حين بدا
I likened the separation of my beloved when it appeared
أزال حكم وجودي إذ تمكن بي
He erased my existence when he took possession of me,
قد أخلف الصبر ميعادي وأنجز بالأسى
Patience has broken its promise to me and fulfilled
لا رحت للآمال منك مبلغا
I did not go to you as a messenger of hopes
قالوا أنخ بحمى ليلى فقلت وهل
They said: Pitch your tents in the meadow of Layla, and I said: Is there any meadow but hers for me to camp in?
من هو أنا حتى أسمى أنا
Who am I to be called I
لم ينل ساكن إليك سكونا
No dweller gains tranquility through you,
بدر سبى الناس حتى الشمس قد كلفت
The moon outshone people until the sun was charged
كن كالزناد يقد نارا قحه
Be like a flint, emitting fire, a spark,
من الصهباء بالنشر
With dawn’s first light it scatters
لقلبي عن مطاوعة اللواحي
My heart refuses to obey the censures
كيف يخفى ما فيك عرفك باد
How can your renown be hidden when your nobility is known among people?
تسننت في عشقي له وهو شيعة
I languished in my love for him though he inclined
رفضت سنة أهل الزهد معتمدا
I refused the way of the ascetics as support
إن لم أخالف زاجر العقل
If I do not defy reason's deterrent
المطل والونمعد أذى
Wastefulness in giving alms
سواي لميل الحب عنه يفاسخ
My inclination to love denies departure from it
غيري يغيره عن العهد القلى
Another changes him from the ancient pact
علام والقد منك عادل
Why does rightfulness flee from you?
قالوا اكشف الحال المغطى
They said "Uncover what's concealed,"
إني أرى كليك الجزئي
I see all of you in every part
رويتم أن نبي الهدى
You have narrated that the Prophet of Guidance
لم ينل سائق الركائب رشدا
The ship's captain did not gain wisdom
عرض الحياة لقلما يسعى له
The pleasures of life are rarely sought
الفيلسوف بيعينه أنا والذي
The philosopher with his two eyes am I; he
أأروم طاعة من ملكت وحاله
Shall I obey one whose state is like mine
هم رغبتي فلماذا في قد زهدوا
They are my desire, so why have they grown weary of me?
حمول لأعباء الهوى غير طالع
Bearing the burdens of passion though not inclined,
يا راغبا بغناه عن فقرائنا
O you who wish to enrich yourself at the expense of our poverty
تدرع في لقاء الخطب صبرا
He armored himself with patience for the trials of life
لو كنت مني ما غبت عني
If you were of me, you would not be absent from me
لا غير من لا غيره لي إله
No one but the One who has no other; He is my God
أغبى الورى من لم يجد نفسه
The silliest of mankind is he who finds
تمتع في شبابك بالأماني
Enjoy your youth with dreams
أحبك حبا جاوز الحب بعضه
I love you with a love that has surpassed love itself
ما شهدت الطرف الذي
I have not witnessed the eyes that saw
إن كان فعلي له مرادا
If my deeds have a purpose
هب منطقي سمعك يا وهب
O Wahab, lend me your ear that wonders may dawn upon you
سررت موهنا نحوي فأبدت مسرتي
I advanced humbly towards her, so she showed her pleasure,
يأبي عادل القوام وإن ما
O my just and upright beloved, though the days
بي مبغض لي على محبته
He who professes love for me is my enemy
أخلصت في الحب ويا حبذا
With utmost love and sincerity
أمي الشريعة والمقيم لها أبي
My mother is my creed, and its upholder is my father,
لبيبهم أحمق من باقل
Their wise man is more foolish than Bāqil,
ألا هل إلى داري بوادي طويلع
Shall I return to my home in the long valley of Tuwayli’
يا ولي الفضل بالفضل من العدل أعذني
O protector of virtue, with your virtue and justice, save me
عجبي لرقة وجه كلفي به
My wonder at the softness of my friend's face
أراني فيك ممسوسا
I see myself touched
الراح كالنار في زجاج
The wind is like fire in glass -
كتابي مشهود لكل مقرب
My book is witnessed by all who are brought near,
بدر بدر ثغره
The full moon smiled, baring his teeth,
لما انثنى عني الرفاق إلى الحمى
When my friends departed from me towards the ruins,
يا مي مل الهوى إلا معناك
O water of passion none but you quenches our thirst
يكون ماذا لمن يموت
What will be for one who dies
لم تبد لي من بها وجدي وبلوائي
You have not appeared to me except with my passion and my affliction,
لا نلت منكم باللقا آمالي
I gained no hopes from you through our meeting,
نهدت إلى الهند في فتية
I roamed to India with Arab youths
لإقدامي لأقدامي مخاض
My steps have labor pains
مرابع سعدى للعيون مراتع
The desert of Sa'daa is grazing land for the eyes,
صفا جسدي حتى بدا منه قلبه
My body became so clear that my heart could be seen
شربت الراح من راحة
I drank relaxation from the palm of
يا من هم دلوا على
O you who guided my heart
تعالت ذات مولاي
My Master's essence is too lofty
رحلت وقلبي عندكم غير ناظر
I traveled, while my heart stayed with you, not looking
لعلوة دون العاشقين حجاب
The veil between the lovers and her is lofty
أرى مشهدي بي منك عنك خصني
I see my vision in you though from you I'm veiled
العز في ذلي لمن هو مؤمن
Glory in my humiliation for one who believes
أنا بالموت عشت في الأحياء
In life with death I lived among the living,
متى ادعيت وصولا بالغرام ولي
When I profess to have attained the heights of love, believe me
النفس في العقل إذ تصفو لرؤيته
The soul in reason when it is pure for its sight
لو لم يكن ناظره ساحرا
If his gaze was not magical
أويت ربعا لا المقيم بظله
I pitched a tent not for the guest to stay in its shade
ومدار دارة قطب أرباب الوفا
The orbits of the pole and the lords of loyalty
بنقط زاد في الخط
With dots he added to the script
في ظله ظل من عن حده حادا
In its shade those who exceed its bounds live in gloom
مازال يخفيني الغرام بحبكم
Still conceals me passion with your love
إن قلت حل بذا وحا
If you say, solve this enigma
شرعة وجدي ما لها نسخ
My covenant has no annulment
يا بأبي البدر الذي
O my father, the full moon whose love nourished my heart
يا من نراه في المنام صورة
O you whom I see in my dream, an image,
أيا جيرة بلوى الأبرقين
O neighbors with the lightning of two dawns,
سنة الله في الذين هدى التسلي
God's way with those whom He has guided is to give them peace
قد بدت البغضاء منهم لنا
Their hatred for us has become apparent
أنسى بذكرك من ناسيك أوحشني
In remembering you I'm saddened by those who forget you
كوني في كون حبيبي الذي
Be in the universe of my beloved in whom
ألكلب ما دام صحيحا عن الحي
The dog, as long as he is healthy, barks
إذا امتنع الإمكان إلا بموجب
If possibility depends on its cause
ولولا اغتراري بالأماني لم أر اغ
Had I not been beguiled by hopes, I would not have seen
أثمة أرباب الصبابة يمموا
The young lovers have surrendered
قالوا ترى ما به لما رأوا ولهي
They asked, "What ails him that he acts so crazed?"
كم صرعت من أسد العرين
How many lions of the lair have I slain
إلى الرحمن نسبة كل عبد
Every servant relates to the All-Merciful
وبدر دجى شعر متى برقت به
When the moons of his cheek flash their brilliance
لولا سنى ربة الخدر بدا
Had it not been for the beauty of the veil's mistress appearing,
يا من بصر في إليه القصد بدلني
O you who aimed his sight toward me as the goal, you replaced
طليق دموع لا يفك له أسر
Tears flow freely, for his shackles grant no respite,
وعيدي من مخلوف
My promise to you will always endure
أبعد نجد أرتضي الغور وعن
Beyond Najd do I yearn for the valleys, though
كل حرف من الكتاب كتاب
Each letter of the Book is a definitive book
غيري لمثق عهد حبك ينكث
Another breaks his covenant of love with you
متى شمت برقا للصوارم لامعا
When will I sense the lightning flash of sharpened swords?
يا ذاهبا عني وما
O you who are leaving me, though
قالوا أشر رمزا معنى الهوى
They asked me to give a symbol for love's meaning
غزلي مديحي من وجودي جوده
My weaving, my praise, from my existence his generosity flows
بنطق سمعي جرى لساني
My tongue flowed with my hearing,
لي خمرة راس بها الراس
I have a wine jug, through which heads become intoxicated
ليس زهد الفتى بتحريم حل
The youth's asceticism is not in prohibiting
أأكشف حالا ستره في النهى شرط
Shall I now reveal what is concealed though forbidden?
ومليحة كالشمس رأد الضحى
Like the radiant sun at dawn’s first light,
تجردت نفسي عن نفسي
My soul stripped itself of self
زعموا أن كل من أعمل الرأي
They claimed all who employ reason
حاجج لمن قال أنا أنت بالسب
Argue with whoever claims "I am you" insolently
بداية وجدي في هواكم نهاية
My love for you is the beginning and the end
ما الحكم في الناس إلا
The judgments of people
أنا في فقدي وجودي
I am lost in finding myself
الحق في الخلق خلق
The truth is truth in creation
قالوا تحدث بالصحيح من ال
ومغرب الشمس ومشرق القمر
أقبل صبحي وسفر
الاسم للوصف غدا باطنا
شاغل القلب هوى عذب اللمي
أطعت أمر الهوى فيكم بمعصيتي
اسم الحبيب متاع
لوجدي جنس نوعه فصل عدتي
سعي الفتى لسوى كف
استعلموا الرأي فيما لا مجال له
متى ما صفا للحق قلب بداله
به الميزان منصوب
نسخت هوى موسى وعيسى بأحمد
أفكارهم بالحظوظ قد شغلت
صفاء الذات منها إذا تجلت
لبيت لما دعتني ربة الحجب
وجه تثليث النصارى
لم يحرم ما كان حلا على
أهلا بداعي إلهي
قلبي بأخلاقه وخلقته
أحسن زهد المرء في رغبه
غناك عن الشيء نفس الغنى
إذا كانت حياة المرء نوما
إن التي باختفائها ظهرت
يبلي هوى الصور الحسان بلاها
وساحر زال عقلي
متى منا محب مدعينا
وجدي بك فقداني
لا أوحش الله منك مغنانا
سرى طيفها وهنا فلله ما أهنا
وجود وجدي فيكم لم يزل
يا حسنا ظاهره
أما وإحسانك القديم وما
قلت للندمان لما غادرت
أدين لليلى بالوفا غير جاهل
فضلت بوجودي فيكم كل واجد
من كابر البرهان في بحثه
إن ترد الجاهل فهو الذي
يعلم اليقين وعين اليقين
أراقبه وهو الرقيب بخاطري
أراقبه خوفا وأرجو مع الحيا
أمر مهول فيه خطب جسيم
دار سلمى سقاك دمعي الهامي
بعلم معنى المعاني
لما مررت بتربة مرت بها
وجود بغير ثراء عدم
حديث غرامي في هواك قديم
حرام دمي لمن أهواه حل
هم المنى والأمل
فراغي بك مشغول
قالوا الجماعة قلت آل محمد
نظري في الصفاء أشهدني غي
لغيري برقك الخلب
إن لم يزدني العلم في حبكم
فرض المحبة ود شيعة حبكم
له الدهر آن والزمان الذي انتهى
جوركم في القرب أشفى إلى
قد كان لي خل خلا بمسرتي
أين لا أنت كي يفر إليه
من لصب متيم مشتاق
كانوا على الشرك يولون الجزيل ويح
لذ بالثناء على الإله
إذا كانت الآيات من عند خالق
يحدث عن سواك سواي زورا
أهل النقا لا بقيت بعدكم
لم يبق لي مني الهوى بقية
حث الركاب بنا والقوم قد وقفوا
إذا وصف العشاق معنى جمالكم
كسرت بالوقت سيفي
قول الإله جل في كتابه
مذ أفقرت ممن أحب الأربع
بدر بم من القبا
بك وصلي عمن سواك انقطاعي
لواجب الوجد في كلي لكلكم
وما زلت أنهى النفس عن طاعة الهوى
لوجودك الجزئي كليات أجنا
خلعت بلبس العز ثوب تنكسي
مدار الحق حق الحق
شهدت مغيب النفس في مشهد النفس
لهوا عن الحق فألهاهم
وإني لأستجلي بمرآة خلوتي
مدار الحق مركزه
آمنت بالمعجز والعجز
أصبحت في الكون بلا حيز
لو رأى العذال يا حار
أول وجدي ماله آخر
مكرهم معروف أهل النهى
علم التصوف ليس يد
أراني محبوءا على كل حالة
لا كنت إن كان لقلبي التذاذ
تعاقبا لعقابي منك بالكمد
مر بي بالآب والإبن
وسحار الجفون يريك نارا
صددت فصد عن عيني رقادي
