To the ignorant I am a wonder;

بي للورى فليطل العجب

1. To the ignorant I am a wonder;
Let their wonder at me endure!

١. بي لِلوَرى فَليَطُلِ العُجبَ
لِأَنَّ سَهلي عِندَهُم صَعبُ

2. My ways seem hard and perilous to them,
Though to me they are proper and pure.

٢. وَقِبلَتي فيهِم شَمالٌ كَما
مَشرِقُ شَمسي لَهُم غَربُ

3. My goals seem to them upside-down,
Though I move straight as light of noon.

٣. وَأَخمُصي واطِئَةٌ ما عَلى
رُؤوسِهِم حَلِّ بِهِ القُطُبُ

4. I circle sunwise while they spiral widdershins;
Their North is my South, their West my East.

٤. لِأَنَّني طِرتُ إِلى غايَتي
طِفلاً وَأَشياخُهُم تَحبو

5. While still a babe, I spread my wings to fly
Toward the purpose I was meant to seek.

٥. فَلَيلُهُم عِندي نَهارٌ وَلي
فيهِ مَعاشُ بِالرِبا يَربو

6. Their elders creep, yet call the upright crooked;
In mud they toil, while stars illume my peak.

٦. وَلي بِهِ نَجمٌ وَبَدرٌ في
هِ الشَمسُ لا يَستُرُها الحَجبُ

7. My night shines brighter than their brightest day;
My interest grows with time, while theirs decays.

٧. وَالدَيرُ لي دارٌ وَأَترابُها
في مِلِّةَ الإِسلامِ لي تُربُ

8. My sky glitters with sun, moon, stars;
Their sight is veiled from such displays.

٨. وَعَقدُ زِنّاري وَأَترابُها
يَأباهُ مَن حَلَّ بِهِ الصُلبُ

9. A convent is my home, my world its grounds;
Its residents are my dear families.

٩. وَلي حَديثٌ عَن قَديمِ الهَوى
قُشورُهُ عِندَ النَهدى لَبُّ
