I will build a boat to save two of every creature
أرقت لبرق آخر الليل منصب
Over the distant lightning of late night I lay awake
تنافس فيه الحزم والبأس والتقى
Where valor, might and piety once strove
إذا غزونا فمغزانا بأنقرة
When we invaded, we invaded with spears
أحب العاذلات لأن جودي
I love the blamers for my generosity
هو الجاعل البيض القواطع والقنا
He made the white castles and the palm trees
يا معشر الأجناد لا تقنطوا
O hosts of soldiers, do not despair
تمت مقابح وجهه فكأنه
The flaws of his face are now complete, as though
إن بني طوق لأعجوبة
The sons of Tawoq are truly a wonder
وفضاء يرجع الطرف به
And space where the gaze returns
رأيت أبا عمران يبذل عرضه
I saw Abu Imran offering his honor
دنا رحيلي فهل في حاجتي نظر
My departure has drawn near, will you attend to my need
وكان أبو خالد مرأة
Abu Khalid was a woman
ولست بقائل قذعا ولكن
I am not speaking nonsense, but
وإذا حلمت فأعط حلمك كنهه
And when you dream, give your dream its essence
وقالوا أترجو الفضل والبحر دونه
And they said, do you hope for grace while the sea lies before you
وما حسن الوجوه لهم بزين
Beautiful faces are no adornment for them
أهلا وسهلا بالمشيب فإنه
Welcome and greetings to the grays, for it is
فليس بغاث الطير مثل عتاقها
So the crying birds are not like their nestlings
إذا نبح الأضياف كلبي تصببت
When my dog barks at guests
وأرى النوال يزينه تعجيله
I see the gifts adorned by their haste,
أرقت لبرق آخر الليل منصب
I was kept awake by lightning at the end of night
شربت وصحبتي يوما بغمر
I drank with my friends one day
فلا تنكح كريمك نهشليا
So do not marry your noble one to a savage
إذا ما اغتدوا في روعة من خيولهم
When they swagger in the ostentation of their steeds
إن القليل الذي يأتيك في دعة
The little that comes to you in leisure

How many people there are, or rather how few,
قد بلوت الناس طرا
I have tried people in various ways
أين محل الحي يا وادي
Where is the abode of the beloved, O valley
هم كتبوا الصك الذي قد علمته
They wrote the document which you knew
أتانا طالبا وعرا
He came to us seeking trouble
إن ابن طوق وبني تغلب
The sons of Tuq and the clan of Taghlib
الله يعلم والأيام دائرة
God knows and the days go round
وريحان يميس على غصون
And basil gently sways on branches
رفع الكلب فاتضع
The dog was raised then humbled
وإذا آخيت من تقذى به
When you confide in one you hope to find rest in
دليتني بغرور وعدك
You lured me with your false promises
علم وتحكيم وشيب مفارق
Wisdom, judgment, and greying hair
عداوة العاقل خير إذا
The enmity of the wise is better
خلخالها يسحب في ساقها
Her anklet drags along her shin
تلاشى أهل قم فاضمحلوا
The people of Qum have vanished and faded away
يا آل بسام في المخازي
Oh companions with smiling faces in prosperity
إن جاءه مرتغبا سائل
If a beggar comes to him seeking,
يعد ما أنفق من ماله
He counts what he spends of his money
ومغن إن تغنى
A singer, though he sing well,
سيبكي البم من جزع عليه
The dew will weep for him out of anguish
أأسبلت دمع العين بالعبرات
Have you shed tears, crying with sobs,
وما تاه على الناس
No noble was ever lost among people,
وإن له لطباخا وخبزا
He has cooks and bread
أعد لله يوم يلقاه
Dibbil prepared for the day he meets Allah
وما استفدت من الديوان فائدة
Roses are red, violets are blue
هم كتبوا الصك الذي قد علمته
They wrote the document you know of
فكأنما حصباؤها في أرضها
Her pebbles in her land appear as though
عجبت لحراقة ابن الحسين
I marveled at the boat of Ibn al-Husayn
مهدت له ودي صغيرا ونصرتي
I offered him my affection when he was small, and my support,
كيف احتيالي لبسط الضيف من خجل
How my stratagems to serve the guest from shame
زمني بمطلب سقيت زمانا
My time with you was a garden I was watered with desire
فلو أني بليت بهاشمي
Had I been afflicted by a Hashimite
صبرت وكان الصبر مني سجية
I have been patient, and patience has become my nature
يشفى غليلك في الديار بقدر ما
Your anguish in the abode will be healed
خليلي من كلب أعينا أخاكما
My two friends, beware of a dog with evil eyes
قالت وقد ذكرتها عهد الصبا
She said, as I reminded her of the covenant of youth:
إذا انتقموا أعلنوا أمرهم
When they take revenge, they proclaim it openly,
وصاحب مغرم بالجود قلت له
To a friend with a generous nature I said,
تشبهت بالأعراب أهل التعجرف
You imitated the uncouth Bedouins
ما كنت إلا كغيث خاب آمله
You were but a rain that disappointed the hopeful one,
أبعد مصر وبعد مطلب
After Egypt and after Muttalib
إياك والمطل أن تقارفه
Beware of procrastination, do not fall into it
كأنما نكهتها كامخ
As though its taste were a doughnut,
صدق أليته إن قال مجتهدا
Believe his complaint if he says it while striving
هناكم أنكم قوم كرام
There you are, O generous folk,
إن من ضن بالكنيف على الضيف
Whoever is stingy with the little they have
أرى منا قريبا بيت زور
I see among us soon a house of falsehood
هي النفس ما حسنته فمحسن
The soul is beautified by what beautifies it,
من كل قافية تحتل ثاوية
From every rhyme that occupies a dwelling
لا تحزننك حاجاتي أبا عمر
Do not let my needs make you sad, O father Omar
شفيعي في القيامة عند ربي
Muhammad and his successor along with the virgin maid
وإني لعبد الضيف من غير ذلة
I am a servant of the guest without humiliation
رأيت أبا عمران يبذل عرضه
I saw Abu Imran sacrifice his honor
كان ينهى فنهى حين انتهى
He used to forbid, so he forbade when he was done,
ألا فاشتروا مني ملوك المخرم
O princes who destroy, buy from me
لا أضحك الله سن الدهر إن ضحكت
May God not let the days laugh long if they laugh
أيا ذا اليمينين والدعوتين
O you of two oaths and prayers,
بانت سليمى وأمسى حبلها انقضبا
Sulaima appeared and her rope broke
ووجه كوجه الغول فيه سماجة
A face like a ghoul's face, in it stupidity
هم المتخيرون على المنايا
They are the ones who ponder death,
سنان محمد في كل حرب
The swords of Muhammad in every battle
شكرنا الخليفة إجرائه
We thanked the Caliph for imprisoning
لقد علمت ومالي ما أعيش به
I have learned though I know not how I live
لا يقبلون الشكر ما لم ينعموا
They do not accept gratitude unless they have
كأنما نفسه من طول حيرتها
As if his soul, perplexed for so long,
ونبئت كلبا من كلاب يسبني
A dog from among dogs has cursed me,
بانت سليمى وأمسى حبلها انقضبا
Sulaima appeared, and her rope broke in the evening,
هجرتك لم أهجرك من كفر نعمة
I did not abandon you out of ingratitude
وذي حسد يغتابني حين لا يرى
One envious of me who does revile
وإن امرأ أمست مساقط رحله
A man whose footsteps halted at Aswan
تخال أحيانا به غفلة
Sometimes out of self-pride, inadvertently
الجهل بعد الأربعين قبيح
Ignorance after forty is shameful
إنما العيش في منادمة الإخ
True living is in companionship with friends,
ليهنك دولة حدثت
A state has risen to glory
إن المشيب رداء الحلم والأدب
Gray hair is the mantle of wisdom and manners
ولما وردنا ماء بيشة لم يكن
When we arrived at Bishah's watering place, it was roiled
اذكر أبا جعفر حقا أمت به
Remember Abu Ja'far truly, I die for him
تأسفت جارتي لما رأت زوري
My neighbor regretted when she saw my falsehood
ولا تعط ودك غير الثقات
Do not give your affection except to the trustworthy
آل الرسول مصابيح الهداية
Family of the Messenger, lamps of guidance, not people of misguidance, masters of deviations
أصبح وجه الزمان قد ضحكا
The face of time has begun to smile
أيسومني المأمون خطة عاجز
Does al-Ma'mun delude me with the plan of an incapable man
وأرى النوال يزينه تعجيله
I see the bowl adorned by its hastening
لو لم تكن لك آباء تبوء بهم
Even if you had no fathers of high renown
ألا أيها القبر الغريب محله
O stranger grave, place of rest
كأن سنانه أبدا ضمير
His lance is ever an accusation of conscience
أولى الأمور بضيعة وفساد
The foremost of affairs tending to ruin and corruption
لم آت مطلبا إلا بمطلب

يا أبا سعد قوصره
O Abū Saʿd al-Kawṣarī
رد السلى مستتما بعد قطعته
The tears return insistently after being cut off
ونبئت كلبا من كلاب يسبني
A dog of dogs barking curses at me,
أمطلب دع دعاوى الكماة
Amuttalib, leave off your empty boasts
لم يطيقوا أن يسمعوا وسمعنا
They could not bear to hear, yet we heard,
ووجه كوجه الغول فيه سماجة
A face like a ghoul's face, in it there is arrogance
كأنه كبش إذا ما بدا
He seems a ram when he appears
ظلت بقم مطيتي يعتادها
My she-camel remained accustomed to Al-Qum
ما أطيب العيش فأما
How pleasant is life when I can see
لا يقبلون الشكر ما لم ينعموا
They do not accept gratitude unless they have
أسر المؤذن صالح وضيوفه
Saleh and his guests captured the muezzin
إن ابن طوق وبني تغلب
The sons of Tawq and the clan of Taghlib,
يا من يقلب طومارا ويلثمه
O you who turns the scroll and kisses it
تصدقت على قومي
I bestowed upon my people
أين محل الحي يا وادي
Where is the abode of the beloved, O valley

Indeed Abu Sa'd is a young poet
قل لعبد الرقيب قل ربي الله
Tell the watchful servant, say "My Lord is God",
معاليه يحصى قبل إحصائها القطر

From a group, if you call them to a tryst

How many people there are, no, how few they are,

A fierce lion when feasting day comes round,
أما آن أن يعتب المذنب
Is it not time for the sinner to feel remorse,
ظلت بقم مطيتي يعتادها
My mount stayed accustomed at Qummah
أهلا وسهلا بالمشيب
Welcome gray hair, for it is
سألت الندى لا عدمت الندى
I asked the dew when I missed the dew
طرقتك طارقة المنى ببيات
The harbinger of desires knocked on your door at nightfall
رد السلى مستتما بعد قطعته
The repairs of peace were underway when it was severed
وما حسن الوجوه لهم بزين
The beauty of their faces is no adornment,
الحمد لله لا صبر ولا جلد
No patience, no resilience,
هي النفس ما حسنته فمحسن
The soul is beautified by what beautifies it,
فانك إن ترى عرصات جمل
For if you see a patch of camels,
تنافس فيه الحزم والبأس والتقى
In it compete determination, valor, and piety
أضياف سالم في خفض وفي دعة
The guests of Salim in tranquility and generosity
من معشر إن تدعهم لملمة
They are a people, if you call them to an assembly
أرى منا قريبا بيت زور
I see a poorly built house among us
لئن كنت لا تولي يدا دون إمرة
If you do not lend a hand without being commanded,
هو الجاعل البيض القواطع والقنا
He makes the cutting blades and the spears
لولا تكون ككاتب لك ربعة
Had you not been a scribe with fortune’s grace,
أبا نصير تحلحل عن مجالسنا
Abu Nasir, you have departed from our gatherings
يا عجبا للمرتجي فضله
How strange is he who hopes for grace,
أمطلب أنت مستعذب
You seek to harm while being harmless,
ألا أيها القطاع هل أنت عارف
O bandit, do you know of our sanctity
إن الكريم إذا حركت نسبته
When you stir the noble man's ancestry,
أبا جعفر وأصول الفتى
O Abu Ja'far, noble lineage
وأهديته زمنا فانيا
And you gifted him a fleeting time
على الكره ما فارقت أحمد وانطوى
Though I never ceased loving Ahmed
وميثاء خضراء زربية
A green and flourishing meadow,
لما رأت شيبا يلوح بمفرقي
When she saw gray hair showing through my parting
بغداد دار الملوك
Baghdad, abode of kings, once was
فأصبحت تستحيي القنا أن تردها
So you made the spears ashamed to thrust them back,
يا نكبة جاءت من الشرق
O calamity that came from the east
شهدت الرقاشي في مجلس
I saw Raqashi in an assembly
ومن الناس من يحبك حبا
Some people love you with apparent affection,
أنا بشرت أبا سعد
I brought glad tidings to Abu Sa'd, so he gave me the good news
ما زال عصياننا لله يسلمنا
Our disobedience of God still leaves us
بني مالك صونوا الجفون عن الكرى
O sons of Malik, guard your eyes from sleep
وأكرهت الهجاء على لئيم
I hated to defame a scoundrel,
أما الهجاء فدق عرضك دونه
Criticism has shaken your honor, do not mind it
تهتم علينا بأن الذئب كلمكم
You worry that the wolf spoke to you,
قد يشيب الفتى وليس عجيبا
The youth may grow grey, and it is no wonder,
ما جعفر ابن محمد ابن الأشعث
Ja'far son of Muhammad son of Ash'ath
أتيت ابن عمران في حاجة
I came to the son of Imran for a need
إذا نبح الأضياف كلبي تصببت
When my dog barks to greet the guests
كانت خزاعة ملء الأرض ما اتسعت
Khuza'a once filled the earth, wherever it spread,
يا آل بيت المصطفى
O house of Al-Mustafa
خبرت الهوى حتى عرفت أموره
I have experienced passion until I understood its ways
يا واقفا يبكي الطلول وينشد
O you who stand weeping for the bereaved while reciting elegies
لو لم تكن لك آباء تبوء بهم
If you had no noble ancestors
ألقى عصاه وأرخى من عمامته
He cast down his staff and loosened his turban
اصرميني يا خلقة المجدار
Take me to you, O beauty of the full moon,
يا ركبتي خزر وساق نعامة
O my knees of a green lizard and legs of an ostrich
داود إنك من ذوي الأحساب
David, you are truly a man of intellect
لا تحزننك حاجاتي أبا عمر
Do not let my needs make you sad, O father Omar
مالي رأيتك لست تثمر طيبا
I have not seen you bear sweet fruit
أخ لك عاداه الزمان فأصبحت
A brother you have, whom time has made an enemy,
يا حسرة تتردد
O recurring sorrow,
أبا مخلد كنا حليفي مودة
O Abu Makhlad we were allies of affection
إن أبا سعد فتى شاعر
Indeed Abu Sa'd is a poet youth
استوص خيرا به فإن له
Command goodness to him, for he has
من الغر الكرام بني سنان
From the honored Bani Sinan tribe
لم أر صفا مثل صف الزط
I saw no line like Zutt's line,
يلوث لحية عرضت وطالت
He soils his beard as it grows long,
وابن عمران يبتغي عربيا
The son of Imran seeks an Arab
أتانا طالبا وعرا
He came to us seeking hardship
خبرت الهوى حتى عرفت أموره
I have long experienced love, and learned its ways,
أحسن ما في صالح وجهه
The fairest trait of Saleh's face
الله أجرى من الأرزاق أكثرها
God made most of the sustenance
نصحت فأخلصت النصيحة للفضل
I gave advice and rendered sincere counsel,
كأنما نفسه من طول حيرتها
As if his soul in bewildered turmoil long
أنا من علمت إذا دعيت لغارة
I am he whom you knew, if called upon for a raid
وذي حسد يغتابني حين لا يرى
With envy he backbites me when he cannot see
أبا مخلد كنا حليفي مودة
Aba Makhlad, we were allies of affection
إن زرته ألفيته متبذلا
If you visit him, you will find him to be generous
تأسفت جارتي لما رأت زوري
My neighbor lamented when she saw my white hair
قد بلوت الناس طرا
I tasted people, pure and simple
أبا عبد الاله أصخ لقولي
O Father of God, listen to my words
هذي حدية عبد أنت ملبسه
This is a supplication of a servant for whom You have clothed
سقيا ورعيا لأيام الصبابات
Water bearer and shepherd of the days of youth
الناس كلهم يسعى لحاجته
All people strive for their needs
أبا نصير تحلحل عن مجالسنا
Abu Nusayr, you have strayed from our circles
إذا غزونا فمغزانا بأنقرة
When we raid, spears guide us,
قل لعبد الرقيب قل ربي الله
Say to the watchful slave, say "My Lord is God",
كيف أصفي الود
How can I purify affection for one who
جاؤوا من الشام المشومة أهلها
They came from ill-omened Damascus, its people
الجهل بعد الأربعين قبيح
Ignorance after forty is ugly
لعمر أبيك ما نسب المعلى
By your father's life, he who ascends high
وداعك مثل وداع الربيع
Your farewell is like the farewell of spring
لا خير فيك سوى كلام طيب
There is no good in you except kind words,
فتى كنت أرجوه وآمل يومه
A youth I hoped for and awaited his day
رأس ابن بنت محمد ووصيه
The head of the son of Muhammad's daughter and his successor,
وما من دون عرضك للقوافي
No verse but yours can bind rhymes' keys,
يلوث لحية عرضت وطالت
He defiles a beard that once broadened and lengthened
أسود إذا ما كان يوم وليمة
A lion on a day of festive delight,
فإذ فات الذي فات
When what's past is past,
أحسن ما في صالح وجهه
The best thing about Salih is his face
دنا رحيلي فهل في حاجتي نظر
My departure draws near, will you heed my need
تصدقت على قومي
I have bestowed upon my people
أما في صروف الدهر أن ترجع النوى
Is it possible that the days will bring back
لنقل الرمال وقطع الجبال
Moving mountains of sand and breaking hills,
أبو تراب حيدره
Abu Turab Haydarah
يا أمة قتلت حسنا عنوة
O nation that unjustly killed Hussein
من كل عابرة إذا وجهتها
From every passerby when I face her
تولى طاهر من بعد أن قد
Tahir departed after having stayed,
عاذلي لو شئت لم تلم
Blame me if you wish, do not blame me
صدقه إن قال وهو محتفل
Believe him if he speaks while being cheerful,
وصاحب مغرم بالجود قلت له
To a friend enamored of generosity, I said
فإذا جالسته صدرته
When you sit with him, you give him precedence
يا ربع أين توجهت سلمى
O beloved, where did Salma go?
أما في صروف الدهر أن ترجع النوى
Is it not in the turns of fate that wishes may return
الله يعلم أنني ما سرني
God knows I've never been as glad
ألام على بغضي لما بين حية
I grieve for hating what's between viper
فلو أنني أصبحت في جود مالك
If only I possessed the generosity of Malik
عير رأى أسد العرين فهاله
A caravan saw a lion in its den, so it shied away,
أفيقي من ملامك يا ظعينا
Awaken from your angels, O thou who blamest
إني أجالس معشرا
I sit with a group
لم أر صفا مثل صف الزط
I have not seen a row like the row of az-Zutt
لئن كنت لا تولي يدا دون إمرة
If you do not lend a hand without being commanded,
ولما رأيت السيف جلل جعفرا
When I saw the sword adorn Ja'far
وإنك إن غبت عني ولم
And if you are absent from me and I find
وريحان يميس على غصون
Basil gently sways on branches,
حنطته يا نصر بالكافور
You embalmed him, O Nasr, with camphor
مهدت له ودي صغيرا ونصرتي
I offered him my affection when he was small, and my support,
ألا أبلغا عني الإمام رسالة
Deliver from me to the Imam a message,
أمطلب دع دعاوى الكماة
Amuttalib, leave off your false claims
وإن امرأ أسدى إلي بشافع
And if a man intercedes for me with an intercessor
ما يتقضى عجبي
I have never desired
يقول زياد قف بصحبك مرة
Ziyad says: stop with your friends once
لولا تكون ككاتب لك ربعة
If you were not a scribe with a large head
وبرهان باردة المطبخ
Her proof is the cold kitchen,
إن من ضن بالكنيف على الضيف
He who is miserly with the loaf against the guest,
وقائلة لما استمرت بها النوى
And a woman saying, when intentions persisted with her,
منازل الحي من غمدان فالنضد
The abodes of the living, from Ghumdan to Fāl,
ذممتك أولا حتى إذا ما
At first I blamed you, until when I
لقد خلف الأهواز من خلف ظهره
He left Ahvaz behind his back
فوهاء شوهاء يبدي الكيد مضحكها
Her gap-toothed mouth reveals a mocking grin,
يا بؤس للفضل لو لم يأت ما عابه
Oh, how wretched is merit, if it does not come with what detracts it,
يا سلم ذات الوضح العذاب
O palm tree with clear beauty
غصبت عجلا على فرجين في سنة
You hastily married two clans in a year,
ألا إنما الانسان غمد لقلبه
Alas, man is but a scabbard for his heart
أين الشباب وأية سلكا
Where is the vigor of youth, where has it gone?
من كل عابرة إذا وجهتها
From every passerby when I address her
خرجت مبكرا من سر من را
I set out early, to fulfill a need, from the home of one I hold dear
وقائلة لما استمرت بها النوى
And a speaker when intentions persisted with her
مات الثلاثة لما مات مطلب
When Muttalib died, three things died along
ما كنت إذ طلبت يداي بك الغنى
When my hands sought from you wealth,
لمست بكفي كفه أبتغي الغنى
I touched his palm, seeking wealth,
أبا عبد الاله أصخ لقولي
O Father of God, listen to my words
لقد رحل ابن موسى بالمعالي
The son of Musa has passed with virtues sublime,
بدأت بحمد الله والشكر أولا
I begin with praise of Allah and thanks first
أسر المؤذن صالح وضيوفه
Salih has captured the muezzin and his guests
بكر الأحبة عنك بالادلاج
The lovers departed from you at dusk
كأنما كفها إذا اختضبت
إني أنا السيف لا ترضيك جدته
ألا أبلغا عني الإمام رسالة
وصاحب كان ما حاولت لي غرضا
مالي رأيتك لست تثمر طيبا
ألام على بغضي لما بين حية
إني وجدتك في الهوى ذواقة
فانك إن ترى عرصات جمل
هم المتخيرون على المنايا
مدارس آيات خلت من تلاوة
فأير علي له آلة
