1. Wisdom, judgment, and greying hair
Have stripped away the bloom of glorious youth,

١. عِلمٌ وَتَحكيمٌ وَشَيبُ مَفارِقِ
طَلَّسنَ رَيعانَ الشَبابِ الرائِقِ

2. And governance in a prosperous state
That had obstructed pleasures is now my barrier.

٢. وَإِمارَةٌ في دَولَةٍ مَيمونَةٍ
كانَت عَلى اللَذّاتِ أَشغَبَ عائِقِ

3. Now I neither wander nor travel,
In old age's submission and a lover's disgrace.

٣. فَالآنَ لا أَغدو وَلَستُ بِرائِحٍ
في كِبرِ مَعشوقٍ وَذِلَّةِ عاشِقِ

4. Ibn Shakla cried out for Iraq and its people,
So every well-knit coat of mail hastened to him.

٤. نَعَرَ اِبنُ شَكلَةَ بِالعِراقِ وَأَهلِها
فَهَفا إِلَيهِ كُلُّ أَطلَسَ مائِقِ

5. If Ibrahim undertakes its affairs,
It will improve after him despite upheavals.

٥. إِن كانَ إِبراهيمُ مُضطَلِعاً بِها
فَلَتَصلُحَن مِن بَعدِهِ لَمُخارِقِ

6. It will improve after that against tremors,
And will improve after him despite rebels.

٦. وَلتَصلُحَن مِن بَعدِ ذاكَ لَزُلزُلٍ
وَلتَصلُحَن مِن بَعدِهِ لِلمارِقِ

7. How can this be when it is not to transpire:
An immoral man inherits the caliphate from an immoral man?

٧. أَنّى يَكونُ وَلَيسَ ذاكَ بِكائِنِ
يَرِثُ الخِلافَةَ فاسِقٌ عَن فاسِقِ
