1. Blame me if you wish, do not blame me
For I am deaf to you, like the deaf
١. عاذِلي لَو شِئتَ لَم تَلُمِ
فَبِسَمعي عَنكَ كَالصَمَمِ
2. So let my secret be known openly
Though it offends my proper tact
٢. فَاِرضَ مِن سِرّي عَلانِيَتي
أَنِفَت مِن رَفضِها شِيَمي
3. And freely I roam, living riotously
Not bored, nor tired, nor satiate
٣. وَأَرعَ سَرحَ اللَهوِ مُغتَدِياً
غَيرَ مُستَبِطٍ وَلا سَئِمِ
4. And stay ensconced in frivolity
Like birds ensconced in sanctity
٤. وَأَقِم بِالسوسِ مُعتَكِفاً
كَاِعتِكافِ الطَيرِ بِالحَرَمِ
5. And drink the wine that is forbidden
To the world's eyes, sealed, private
٥. وَاِشرَبِ الراحَ الَّتي حُجِبَت
عَن عُيونِ الدَهرِ بِالخَتَمِ
6. Its fire a sun, its drink a draught
From an ancient keeper, sublime
٦. نارُها شَمسٌ وَمَشرَبُها
صَيِّبٌ مِن واكِفٍ سَجِمِ
7. So its jars were impregnated
Though not by burdened camels' wombs
٧. فَدَعا صِنوانَها لَقَحٌ
لَم يَكُن حَملاً عَلى عُقُمِ
8. And its plenteous hills bent
From growths flowing like hot lava
٨. وَاِنثَنَت أَفياءُ نَبعَتِها
عَن نَباتٍ سالَ كَالجُمَمِ
9. In bunches twisted awry
Like the locks of Africans in steam baths
٩. بِعَناقيدٍ مُعَثكَلَةٍ
كَشُعورِ الزَنجِ في الحَمَمِ
10. It was freed by dissolution, it burst
Begetting that not in the womb
١٠. فَدَعاها الطَلقُ فَاِنفَطَرَت
لِوِلادٍ لَيسَ في الرَحِمِ
11. It was passed down to Thamud till
Its people, heirs of Iram famed
١١. فَتَهادَتها ثَمودُ إِلى
قَومِها مِن وارِثي إِرَمِ
12. And ages stepped over it, though had
It spoken in the cup, with words,
١٢. وَتَخَطَّتها العُصورُ فَلَو
نَطَقَت في الكَأسِ بِالكَلِمِ
13. Then rendered all it witnessed
Of peoples' generations and realms
١٣. ثُمَّ أَدَّت كُلَّ ما شَهِدَت
مِن قُرونِ الناسِ وَالأُمَمِ
14. So free nobles obtained it
Of lofty folk, wronged oft
١٤. فَاِقتَنَتها فِتيَةٌ سُمُحٌ
مِن أُناسٍ سادَةٍ هُضُمُ
15. And it shone in their palms
Like the glow of coals in the brazier's heart
١٥. فَاِستَنارَت في أَكُفِّهِمُ
كَسَنا النيرانِ في الأَجَمِ
16. That is what souls live by
So when will I alight by it
١٦. تِلكَ ما تَحيا النُفوسُ بِها
فَمَتى أَنزِل بِها أُقِمِ
17. To settle in a scented temple's environs
Worshipping in it an idol
١٧. في نَواحي هَيكَلٍ أَرِجٍ
عاكِفاً فيهِ عَلى صَنَمِ
18. Carved in beauty from foot to pinnacle
When I calm its ferocity
١٨. نُقِشَت بِالحُسنِ صورَتُهُ
مِن ذُرى قَرنٍ إِلى قَدَمِ
19. And it rests in my mouth
To me returns the pole of joy
١٩. فَإِذا سَكَّنتُ رَوعَتَهُ
وَرَعى في مُقلَتَيهِ فَمي
20. As I was wont always before
٢٠. عادَ لي قُطبُ السُرورِ كَما
كُنتُ مُعتاداً عَلى القِدَمِ
