لعل اعترافي باقترافي شافع
Perhaps my confession of my sins will intercede for me,
فسا على القوم فقالوا له
He passed by the people, and they said to him,
روحني من كلفت من سببه

عسى يدنيك يا بلدي إياب
May you come nearer, my country, as youth returns,
انظر إلى مستنزه الأنفس
Behold the garden of contented souls
ذكرت به عهدا كأن لم أفز به
I recall a time as if I never lived it
أنا المذنب الخطاء والعفو واسع
I am the sinner, the one who erred, but forgiveness is vast,
إذا شرفت نفس الفتى عافت الذلا
If a young man's soul disdains humiliation
تولى شباب واقتراب فأمعنا
Youth has passed and come near, so we have revelled,
ميزت ساقط ما سرحت من شمطي
I discerned the fallen from what I let loose of my whip,
لا تشكون إلى وجدا بعدها
Don't complain to me of passion after this
يا من صفا لي ظاهرا ونيه
O you whose intentions and affection are pure
هي الدنيا فلا يحزنك منها
Roses are red, violets are blue
نهيت الحبيب عن المروحة
I forbade my beloved from using the fan
لا أظلم البين حالي كالذي كانا
I do not blame the one I love if he is absent or close

Eloquence finds no home in the elegant phrase
بجلال قدرك تفخر الأزمان
With the majesty of Your decree, time takes pride,
قصر في أوصافك العالم
The learned fell short describing you
لئن أنكرت مقلتاها دمه
If her eyes deny his blood
يا رعى الله مبدع الحمام
O God, bless the creator of pigeons
انظر إلى الروضة الغناء والنيل
Look at the flowered garden and the Nile
صلى الإله عليك يا بن رسوله
May God bless you, O son of His Messenger,
إذا النيلوفر المفتوح دارت
When the water lilies open wide
لقد جمع الكانون نورا وظلمة
The fireplace gathered light and darkness
انظر إلى حكم الصناع في عملي
Look at the skill of the artisans in my creation
يا سيدا يده عمت نوافلها
Oh Master, his hand has encompassed its supererogatory acts
قالوا محا حسنه تجدره
They said, "Erase his beauty, disfigure him!"
لله يومي بالثغر في الجوسق
For God, my days pass with joy,
ألا هل لدائي من فراقك إفراق
Alas! Does my affliction from your separation have a cure?
كأنما الخال في محمر وجنتها
As if her cheek’s a rose in its rosy bower,
طفل تفنن فيه الحسن مبتدعا
A child in whom beauty innovated perfection
يا رب أنت حسيب الخلق في قمر
O Lord, you are the creator of all in the moon,
نزه لحاظك في غريب بدائعى
Over the strange wonders of my making
فتميس الغصون زهوا إذا غن
The branches exude vitality when
إذا كان عقبى ما يسوء التصبر
If the consequence of patience in adversity
متى كانت الأيام تسعف بالمنى
When were the days so kind to my wishes
من سره كسب مال لا نفاذ له
Whoever desires endless wealth
ورؤوس جاءت بكل رئيس
With heads that came with every eminent leader
انظر إلى بهجة ذا المنظر
Behold the splendor of this scene's beauty
هذا الربيع وهذه أنواره
This springtime and its lights
أقسمت لو كاتبتكم
I burned with longing and belief
عندنا كيزان فقا
We have crystal vases

O home, around you prosperity revolves,
لما رأيتك فوق السرير
When I saw you upon the bed
بمنازل الفسطاط حل فؤادي
In the quarters of Fustat my heart found repose,
وفاتن بالجمال والدعج
With beauty and grace she is blessed
هجر العذول وراح طوع غواته
He abandoned chastity and followed his lust,
لمن الشموس غربن في الأحداج
For whom did the suns set in the valleys
عسى يبلى العذول ببعض ما بي
May he feel some of my pain, so he pardons or lessens his reproach,
رحلوا فلولا أنني
They left, and had I not
لقد جدت حتى ما دنا منك وافد
You were so generous to all who came to visit
ما أغدر الدنيا وليس لغدرها
Softly the world betrays, though betrayal
لله أيامي بقليوب
My days belong to Allah
أنا مفتاح الملاهي والطرب
I am the key to merriment and joy

المال والجاه ضائعان
Wealth and glory are lost
عجبت لشكري كيف يرجو بجهده
I wondered at my thanks, how with my effort
وثقيل في القلب والعين والسم
The grief in my heart, eyes, and poison is heavy
والنيل مثل عمامة
The Nile is like a turban
لا تشبه الحمام في وضعها
The dove in her posture is naught
أما رأيت هلال العيد حين بدت
Have you not seen the new moon of Eid when it appeared
أفرط نسياني إلى غاية
My excessive forgetting has reached
على الجانب الإسكندري سلام
Peace be upon the Alexandrian side
يذم من الشعر الأبيض
The whiteness of hair is blamed,
هذا الخليج فمرحبا بزمانه
This gulf, so welcome is its time
وروض له من جلمد الصخر أزهار
And a garden for him with flowers of solid rock
وليلة بات فيها البدر يفضحني
A night when the full moon shamed me
هواى وعقلي فيك ضدان لم يزل
My passion and my reason are at odds about you,
كم قدر ما أخفي الهون وأصون
How great is the extent of what I hide and guard,

A crescent in a sheath amidst the dunes

Behold the mole on her cheek
والله لو صح عندي أن هجركم
And if I were sure that leaving you would end
وبيضاء العوارض قابلتها
Her cheeks white as the shining moon,
لله حمام كروض أنيق
God has a dove-like bath
أفى كل يوم لي إلى البين حسرة
Every day my longing for the beloved grows
وافى بفقاع أرج
With bubble pipe aroma he drew near,
انظر لقرن الشمس بازغة
Behold the sun's horn rising
ألا هل إلى برد الأصائل بالحمى
Is there no refuge from separation's sting
طراز مشيب في عذار له نقش
The style of gray hair in a youth has an engraving
يا دار حلت فيك كل سعادة
O home where all happiness has settled
شباب تولى ما إليه سبيل
A youth has assumed what path is open to him
أأحبابنا بالثغر إني وإن نأت
Our friends, though I and the house are far from you
نصل الحول وأراني
The years have passed and I see myself
كأن جيوش الفحم من فوق جمره
As if armies of coal above their embers,
إذا ما جيوش القر جاءت فرم لها
When the cold's armies advance, welcome them
نغم الحداة بكم وزجر السائق
The melody of love for you and the driver's shout
ياثالث القمرين حسبك أنني
O third of the two moons, it is enough for me

Behold the shape of the two pyramids and look
هناك الفخر يا شهر الصيام
There is pride, O month of fasting,
أنت صديق الناس ما لم تكن
You are people's friend unless you yearn
واعجبا من جنة في ضرام
A wonder and marvel from a garden in wilderness
توالى عذابي من عذاب المراشف
My torment piled on torment from all sides,
انظر إلى الخال على خدها
Behold her mole upon her cheek -
كتابي كتاب أخي لوعة
My book is my brother's book of yearning
جاء الربيع أخو حياة الأنفس
Springtime came, the brother of refreshed souls,
تولوا فأفنى الهم قلبي عليهم
They turned away, and grief destroyed my heart over them,
أوجهك أم قبلة فالغصو
Your faces, or a kiss, so the branches bow
لا غرو أن رحل الشباب وبانا
No wonder youth has departed and vanished;
أعز الورى من أفاد القنوعا
The dearest of mankind is he who benefits the content,
انظر فقد أبدى الأقاحي مبسما
Look, the anemones have begun to smile,
هلال يحاكي نصف حلقة عاج
A crescent moon that mimics a half circle of ivory
لو ذقت حين عتبت أيسر حبه
Had you tasted when you blamed the easiest of his love,
حديث إذا تم استعيد كأنه
A tale when told in full, it's as though
أنحلني حبك يا متلفي
Your love undid me, my unifier
متلونين على شواهد حبهم
Their tombstones are tinted with the hues of their love,
خاض الظلام فاهتدى بغرة
He overcame the darkness, guided by her glow
توالى علي الغدر منكم وأخلقت
Betrayal upon betrayal from you has ensued, and my affectionate ties are severed,
توافق الناس في النسيان واختلفوا
People agreed to forget, yet they differed,
لا زلت سامع ما يصفو من النغم
You still hear the most melodious tunes,
هناؤك ليس يعدمه زمان
Your joy is never lacking in time
ترى ثغر ذاك الثغر بالقرب يبسم
The mouth of that mouth smiles near
مالي وللحادثات الصم تطرقني
Misfortunes besiege me silently,
ألا لا أعاد الله ليلى بحجرة
Alas! Would that God restore to me the room
لولا التمائم والرقي من كتبكم
Were it not for your talismans and spells
عتبت ولكنني لم أع
You reproached, but I did not know,
أسير وقلبي في يديك أسير
I'm a captive, and my heart is in your hands, a captive
كم رام سلوته العذول فما وعى
How often the loving one longed for union, but gained no understanding,
كأنما النرجس الطاقي حين بدا
As if the towering narcissus when it appeared
تأمل ففي الكانون أعجب منظر
Behold in the fire brand a wondrous sight,
من حط أثقال الغرا
Whoever has left the burdens of love,
غدونا للغداء غداة قر
We went to lunch one morning
ووردة يقصر عنها الوصف
A rose beyond description,
عتبت الزمان عسى يعتب
I reproached time, perhaps it would reproach me,
هذا الربيع أتى بأحسن منظر
This spring has brought the most beautiful scenery
جاء الرسول لعبده بكتابه
The messenger came to his servant with his book
إذا شئت أن تقلى من الناس كلهم
If you wish to be shunned by all people
أقصاه جور البين عن أحبابه
The remoteness from his loved ones,
عسى يجري الزمان على اختياري
Perhaps time will flow according to my choice
وحمام حللت به لكيما
With a dove I entered in hopes
من فاته من نفسه وعظ
He who misses self-admonition
خلوت بليلى ذات يوم وبيننا
I spent a night with Layla, and between us
كأن الثريا تقدم الفجر والدجى
The Pleiades advance the dawn and dusk
لا يكشف المرء في الحمام عورته
Man does not expose his nakedness in the bath
أأحبابنا هل لي إلى ما عهدتم
My friends, can I still find the life I knew,
واظب تنل كل صعب معوز عسر
Persevere, you will achieve every difficult, unattainable goal
هل الموت إلا دون ما أنا وارد
Is death less than what I endure
حمامنا هذه حمام
Our bathhouse here is a bathhouse
أربع شبابي هل إليك رجوع
Will the vigor of my youth return to you?
إن كنت خنتكم المودة ساعة
If I ever betrayed your friendship for an hour,
أنا للعود لسان
I am the tongue of the lute

O full moon that shines with beauty, radiant and bright,
وساعة جاد بها العمر
An hour passed, in which life was generous,
عليك ثناء العالمين فصيح
You are praised by all the world, eloquent one
إذا قلت قد رق الزمان وصرفت
When I say time has softened me, and turned
ويوم تبدى من سحائبه الودق
When his clouds began to drizzle
شكري لقربك واشتياق
My gratitude for your nearness and yearning
بيت كصدري ورزقي
A house like my chest and livelihood
كبارة لاح بها
A flower of wondrous form appeared
هلل فهذا هلال العيد عاد بما
Rejoice, for this is the crescent moon of Eid, returning with
ولله مجرى النيل فيها إذا الصبا
The Nile flows by the will of God in it, when the breeze blows,
غدا بالثغر لي ثغر شتيت
Tomorrow my mouth will bear two mouths,
يا من نصيبي منه قر
O you whose nearness to me is like
رجاؤك في نيل السعادة باب
Your hope for attaining happiness is a door,
وبيت دعيت له ثم لم
And a house I was invited to then did not
سل الخيل والسمر الذوابل والوغى
Ask the horses, the night patrols, the raids,
وروضة في هجير
A garden of delights in a desolate land,
وليلة من حسان الدهر بت بها
One night of delight from the bounties of time we spent
يا قلب ما فعلت بك العينان
Oh my heart, what have the eyes done to you?
لهذا الجلال الذي لا يرام
For this majesty that cannot be wished for,
أطلع الحسن من جبينك شمسا
The beauty rises like a sun from your forehead,
وصبيحة باكرتها في فتية
In the dawn I awoke to youthfulness
يا لاح في سمر كالسمر
O sailor in the night as dark as jet,
صحبت بنات الدهر حتى أريننى
I associated with the girls of time until they made me see
لا أسعد الله مسعودا فصنعته
No one blessed by God should alter what He made,
انظر إلى المجلس الأعلى وما جمعت
Behold the lofty council and what
زيادة المال باب الهم والتعب
Increasing wealth is the path of worries and toil
صحة في سلامة ونعيم
Health in wellbeing, bliss
ويوم ضاحك يبكي
A laughing day weeps
الفضل فضلان فضل المرء بالأدب
The merit of merit is twofold, the merit of a man is through etiquette
لله وافر كمثرى ذكرت به
Abundant praise to God, as I recalled Him
وصادح في ذرى الأغصان نبهني
A bird startled me out of a slumber
أما والهوى لو أن أحكامه قسط
If only justice governed love's decrees,
عسى الجانب الغربي يهدي نسيمه
May the western winds send their breeze
يا راغبا في غنى وكنز
O you who seek wealth and treasure
وروضة زاهرة
A garden blooming
ألا ليت صبري لم يبن مثلما بانوا
Alas! I wish my patience had not been revealed as they were revealed
يجل اشتياقي أن أقول له وصفا
My yearning burns to tell him of a love
يا دار ماذا فيك من ملح
O abode, what kindness is in you
شربك حب الفهم صعب فلا
Drinking the wine of understanding is hard, so do not
