1. Wealth and glory are lost
Save to generosity and breaking of fetters

2. How many misers have they enriched for a time
Only to return to humiliation and abjection?

3. They had them awhile, then passed from them
Without artifice or obligation

4. As the sword and spear when unsheathed
Lose their potency in the hands of the coward

5. So be awake if ever you hold
Sway over this sort of thing

6. For these delights vanish
While the wages and praise endure

7. And most prudent of all men is he who
Is not despised for the blame on his tongue
