1. If the consequence of patience in adversity
Is hastened during calamity, it is more apt,

2. And the ultimate solace for grieving souls
Is to expedite it while they are rewarded.

3. The brave is not one who strikes his chest
As cups of wine are ignited and kindled,

4. But one whom bereavement pains his heart,
And the events of time expose, yet he is patient.

5. O ruler of the world whom righteousness
In his days makes the land and people prosper!

6. If the great calamity is difficult in its place,
Your forbearance is higher in merit and greater.

7. Your breast contains some determination
That straitens the entire world, belittling it.

8. For forbearance, majesty and lofty peaks,
And for knowledge, virtues and vast oceans.

9. Grief has shaken mighty mountains,
But your fortitude is weightiest and firmest.

10. Your merit is like the sun in its light and sublimity—
Nay, it is higher, nobler, and more splendid.

11. With your knowledge, the enlightened souls are guided,
And you are more knowing than those who console.

12. Consoling is a Prophetic tradition—
Otherwise, discernment issues from you and flows out.

13. What has been said is but some of your knowledge,
So there is deficiency and abundance in it.

14. Your knowledge of things—no increase over it,
Nor do you forget then remember it anew!

15. When one's perception is sound, certainty is assured for him,
And the astrolabe of intellects functions properly.

16. The world has submitted to ‘Ād and Tubba‘,
And Chosroes and Caesar managed kingship in it.

17. They erected lofty castles in the lands—
Eyes squint to gaze at them in amazement!

18. Have the days kept them? Or has ruin spared
One abased and forgotten or mighty and mentioned?

19. If death had spared a man for his grandeur,
He would have been most rightful and worthy of triumph.

20. The hand of death has seized a brain
Guarded by the weapons and armies of resolve.

21. Woe to death! How it has wronged him, yet it is
Among your handiworks, which are feared and cautious.

22. Its regulation is in your hands, amidst swords and spears,
And horses stumbling with bridles.

23. You are to it like armor amidst the fray,
When a coat of mail protects the people.

24. I reckon he extended his hands to his purpose,
While death in that was rendered helpless.

25. None who live through you has died—
Rather, he remains immortalized in time.

26. The world will not lack a pillar though one departs,
For your face illuminates it, blossoming with light.

27. You are for these people a spirit, overseer,
A refuge in whom they live, suffice, and behold!

28. No life is pleasant but in your time,
No soul healed but by your care.

29. No kingdom on earth remains
Unless its king's favor is perfumed with your mention.

30. I would believe until no fearful one remains on earth,
You have dismayed until the arrogant are humbled.

31. You have been just until none aggrieved remains on earth,
Enriched until none destitute remains on earth.

32. Yours is the famed excellent conduct in the lands—
Its diffusion is fragrant in every region.

33. When it is said “the Emperor,” no superior remains
Whose merit is not recorded as inferior to yours.

34. To the superior belongs the superiority which every
Meritorious person is tardy in comprehending.

35. O pillar of Islam, be gentle with him,
For this grief affects it and you it influences.

36. What value is this world compared to its deeds to you?
No, it is base and contemptible.

37. If the agony of parting is distressing,
What you have attained from those departed is more glorious.

38. Tomorrow in God's vicinity, where he will be visited
By clouds of a living rain of God's mercy pouring down!

39. If they have buried his body, his praise
Will remain with time in all mouths, never interred.

40. Your continuance consoles the soul for all departed,
Your existence revives the deceased and broadcasts life.

41. You have been ransomed with all souls,
And your life repetitively revives the living!
