وكم من فتى يسعى ويحرم دائبا
How many a youth strives and is deprived
لا تلومني فمثلى لا يلام
Do not blame me, for one like me is not to be blamed
يا هل شجتك برود الريق حواء
O one whose cool saliva has enchanted,
تعلم العلم حقا يا فتى عمر
Learn knowledge truly, O youth of my life
سمعا وطوعا للإمام
Listen and obey the Imam
يا أيها الملك المرجى فضله
O King whose grace is hoped for
فاتر الطرف كحيل
The languid-eyed one whose
الموت أبكى جملة الأقوام
Death made all the tribes weep
فما لفظة من فيك تلفظ دائما
Not a word from your mouth ever utters
أأحبابنا منكم حياة لنا الوصل
Our loved ones, through you we have life, in union with you
ثلاث حلى للرجال فهاكها
Roses are three for men, their fruit
لابد من بعد النوى من زورة
After hardship comes ease -
أوصيكمو يا أيها العقلاء
I advise you, O wise ones
سلام كريح المسك بل هو أطيب
A greeting like the fragrance of musk, but it is sweeter
وما لي تمن غير لقياك ساعة
I have no wish but to meet you one hour
إن يوم الفراق كان شديدا
The day we parted was so hard
أتاني كتاب من سليل محمد
A letter came to me from a descendant of Muhammad
أتاني كتاب من شقيقى ووالدى
A letter came to me from my brother and father
ألا فاذكرا العهد الذي كان بيننا
Oh recall the covenant that was between us
أنا مذ نشأت بسيبكم مغمور
I have been immersed in your generosity since my youth
لمي بوادى المنحنى طلل قفر
A thirsty gazelle in the winding valleys
خليلى هل بعد السنين الغوائر
My beloved, after the fleeting years
لقد عشت في ذا القرن خمسين حجة
I lived fifty years in this life
ثلاث بهن المرء يزداد رفعة
Three things make a man rise in esteem:
سكرنا بخمر الشوق والبعد والنوى
Intoxicated by the wine of longing, separation, and purpose
قفوا قلنا في ربع ليلى مواقف
Stop, we said, in the dwellings of Layla, so we may stand
يا أميم انظري عذاب المشوق
O dove, look at the torment of the enamored one
لا شغل لي في أول أو حاضر
I have no concern for past or present,
أهدى السلام إلى الكريم المفضل
I send greetings of peace to the generous, preferred one
سألت من الكريم من الرجال
I asked, who is the generous man among men?
شمر الذيل وبادر للعمل
Roll up your sleeves and get to work,
سلام يسلى الفؤاد الشغيل
A greeting that comforts the restless heart
ألا فاعذراني إن عتبت عليكما
Forgive me if I reproach you both
قد قال قوم بأن الخير مجتمع
Some people say that good is found
حاز المحاسن من خلق ومن خلق
He attained perfection in character and manners
بنى مصعب أنتم أولو العلم والهدى
O sons of Mus'ab, you are the first in knowledge and guidance
بنينا بجنب الروضة الآن مسجدا
We built a mosque by the garden now
إن فقد الأهلين كان عظيما
The loss of loved ones was immense
بيضاء واضحة الترائب غادة
White, conspicuous lineage, Ghadha
أنت الحبيب المرتضى ولك الهنا
You are the beloved, the chosen one, and for you is praise
مرت كخوط الخيزرانة غادة
She passed by like the lines of tattoos, Ghadah
بموتِ المرتضى الواكي الرضى
With the death of Al-Murtada, the pleased became sorrowful
ثلاث بهن المرء يزداد قوة
A man's strength grows in three ways:
أبلعرب الملك الإمام العادل
The just imam, the virtuous king of Arabs
أبيت ولى قلب قريح من البكا
My heart is broken with sorrow and longing,
ثلاث إذا ما المرء في الدهر حازها
Three things, when one possesses them,
رحلتم والمدامع في انسكاب
You left and tears were flowing
خليلي إن الهم والحزن خيما
My beloved, grief and sorrow have pitched their tents
من لصب دموعه ليس ترفا
He whose tears of passion aren’t extravagance
عسى الله بعد البين يجمع بيننا
May God, after this separation, bring us back together
حبيب ملول بالوصال بخيل
My beloved is stingy with union
توسدي براثن الحيات تضطرب
Should I lay my head on the fangs of snakes that writhe
ألا إنما دنياكم مثل حية
Behold, your worldly life is but like a snake
أرى الدنيا وزخرفها غرورا
I see the world and its vanities as an illusion,
يا زروة قد أورثت
O Zarwa, you have inherited
توفى محمود الفضال ولينا
Our protector Mahmoud Al-Fiddaal has passed away
من كان عند الله غالب
Whoever prevails with God,
حي المعاليم والرسوما
O source of virtues and traditions
إذا أقبلت دنيا تقاد بشعرة
If fate comes led by a single hair
يا نهرا سميت بالأصغرين
O river called Al-Asgharin
جار الحبيب على الكئيب ببعده
The beloved neighbor departed in sorrow
ثلاث تقود الصعب وهي حميدة
Three lead to hardship yet remain virtuous
فأنا المقر بذا ولكن ليس لي
For though I am near to that, I have no business with them, not even a bit without solemnity
قضى اللّه فيما بيننا بقرابة
God has ordained kinship between us
أتاني كتاب من محب مصاحب
A letter reached me from a loving companion,
ثلاث بهاء الوجه تذهب سرعة
Three with a bright countenance depart quickly
من لصب تصاعدت حسراته
One whose longing arose in grief,
ثلاث تزيد المرء نورا وحكمة
Three increase a man's light and wisdom
النون حاجبه والعين مقلته
His eyebrow is a nun, his eyelashes a meem
بنينا وشيدنا بناء معمدا
We built and erected a supported structure
إن الذي نهواه منك لحاضر
He who forbade you is ever-present
يا ذا النوال الغادر
O you of generous favours,
ثلاث يصير الحر فيها مشرفا
Three things make a man honored and sublime-
إني لأعجب من أناس زماننا
I'm amazed at people of our time
لا خير في مستقبل أو حاضر
There is no good in the future or present
لله في الأرض أقوام قد اشتملوا
There are people of God on earth who have been endowed
أبلعرب الملك الهمام العادل
O noble Arab king, defender of justice
ملك بدا ما به زيغ ولا خطل
A kingdom whose uprightness had no deviation or error,
ورد الكتاب من الكريم المفضل
The book has arrived from the generous, distinguished
هاكم من أخى وداد سلاما
From my brother Waddad I bring you greetings
مشايخنا مصابكم عظيم
Our masters, your calamity is great
وعدت فأوف يا قاضي الأنام
You promised, so fulfill, O judge of mankind
عليكم وإن طال البعاد سلام
Peace be upon you, though we are far apart,
أعوذ بك اللهم من فقر ساعة
I seek refuge in You, O Allah, from the poverty of an hour
يقولون لي ما بال لونك شاحبا
They ask me, why is your color so pale?
ثلاث يعيش المرء فيها مكرما
Three things that make a person live honored,
فصم عن نسيب الغواني ولا
Turn away from the beloved of pleasures, and refrain
ثلاث فساد الدين عند اتباعها
Three corrupt religion when followed -
يا ابن الإمامِ المرتضى
O son of Imam Al-Murtaza
يا نفس أنت محادده
O soul, you are an adversary
أتانى كتاب منك فاستر خاطرى
A letter came to me from you, it delighted my soul
أحب أهل العقول من الرعايا
Love the wise men of the people
إذا ما حباك الله يوما بثروة
If God grants you wealth, power, and fame one day,
إذا بلغ الفتى سبعين عاما
When a young man reaches seventy years
ستسقى قوافي الشعر بعدى وأعظمى
My poetry's rhymes will be watered after I am gone, and my greatest
قد جاء ذلك في القرآن معناه
Its meaning has come in the Quran
دمعي جرى يوم بان الحي من إضم
My tears flowed when the loved one departed from embrace
أكرم بمن يسأل سؤاله
Honor he who asks his question before asking,
درويش يا ذا الخلفة الشوهاء
O Darwish, one with a repugnant mandate,
قد طال يا ليلى على نواك
Long has your abandonment been for me, O Layla
ثلاث خصال يفسد الملك عندها
Three traits corrupt sovereignty when present:
يقولون إن الصبر للمرء عدة
They say patience for a man is a virtue
وذو الحلم لا تقذى الأراجيف قلبه
He of forbearance, slander harms not his heart,
مني السلام على الولى الوالي
My greetings of peace to the Guardian, the Trustee
برق أضا من أيمن الجرعاء
A lightning flashed from the right of Al-Jar'a'
صب تحرقه أسى لرعاته
A youth consumed by the sorrows of his fickle beloved,
بحر الفصاحة غاض يا إخواني
The sea of eloquence has withdrawn, O my brothers
وبارق بعض العالمين نساءهم
Some lands shone as their women grew bright,
ثلاث تزيد الوجه نورا ونضرة
Three things make the face brighter and more radiant
ثلاث يحار العقل عند نزولها
Three things that perplex the mind when they occur
سلام وتسليم وألف مسرة
Greetings of peace and salutations, a thousand joys
قيل لي أنت في مديحك تغلو
They told me you exceed in your praise
أنفق من المال ما استطعت فذو
Spend what you can afford, for the generous
سلام وتسليم وألف تحية
Peace and greetings, a thousand welcomes
شربت شمولا من شتيت مشوبة
I drank the cup of life in sips, sweetened
نهيم بهم وجدا ونحن بقربهم
We sympathize with them in deep sorrow while we are close to them,
مذ مدة ما جاءنا
It's been a while since
وحباك الإله ملكا وإنصالا
God has granted you kingship and power
أمحمد بن محمد بن المرتضى
O Muhammad son of Muhammad son of al-Murtada
فلا تحسبن البعد يمحو ودادكم
Do not think distance erases your affection
ولما قرعتم باب عتبى فتحته
When you knocked at the door of my retreat, I opened it
أيا عين جودى بالدموع السواجم
O my eye, be generous with tears as streams
إليك لقد جربت كل بلية
To you, I have tasted all types of affliction,
لا تبخلن وأعط كلا حقه
Do not be stingy, give each their due rights
نهني بك الأعياد إنك عيدها
We congratulate you on the holidays, for you are their feast
ورد الكتاب من الحبيب الواثق
The book came from the confident beloved
هو الحق ما قال الحكيم فإنها
What the wise man said is true, for it
هنيت بالنصر موعودا لك الظفر
You were promised victory, and victory is destined for you
أنا بحر هجو إن أردت جفائي
I am a sea of satire if you desire my aloofness,
يا حبذا بستان قيس الكامل
O blessed is the garden of Qais the Perfect
ما زلت في لهو وفي طرب وفي
I was still immersed in joy and ecstasy
وإن شئت استباحة كل أمر
If you wish to make permissible all command,
ثنتان لا تنساهما واذكرهما
Two things never forget and always remember
يا بتعة فاقت ببهجتها
O delights that surpassed delight
لقد قال طرفى للفؤاد شغلتني
My eyes said to my heart, "You have kept me busy."
أطلق لسانك ما تشا
Speak your mind freely, do not restrain
تريد أن تشرب من مائنا
You wish to drink from our water,
ألا إنني في نعمة ومسرة
Behold, I am in bliss and joy, in health of limbs,
اليوم قد جاوزت من
Today I have passed
ورد الكتاب فسرني
The book arrived, bringing me joy
غزال غزا قلبي بخيل صدوده
A gazelle has raided my heart with the swords of his eyelids
كتب الحسن في محياك سطرا
Al-Hasan wrote in your cheek a line
بم التصبر لا خل ولا شجن
With what can I have patience? There is no bosom friend, no family, no homeland,
كتابكم وافى إلينا فسرنا
Your letter has reached us, so we rejoiced
مهما جرى حين مل الوصل مت هوى
No matter what happened when love was fulfilled
لو كان أبخل في الورى من مادر
If the stingiest in the world was less generous than Madar
وقلت له لقياك خير علالة
I said to him, meeting you is better solace
توفى ركن الدين والعلم والهدى
The pillar of faith, knowledge and guidance passed away
ثقيل على كل الورى من تكبر
The proud are a burden upon all the earth,
أهنيك يا ابن الأكرمين الأطايب
I congratulate you, O son of the most generous and purest,
أنت يا مقلتي أسقمت حالي
You, my inclination, have made me ill
إذا ما بدا برق بنعمان لامع
هجرت بعدك العيون الرقادا
منعت مقلتى لذيذ الرقاد
خذ نصيبين من صفاء السرور
سأصبر صبرا لا يشاكله صبر
وأعط إذا أعطيت غير مبذر
إليك فعيني دمعها ليس يقلع
القلب صار من الفراق عليلا
لا خير في عجلة الإنسان يا ثقتي
إني بفضل من الله ذو دعة
بوركت بنية وقد بارك الله
قد قضى لي بالصد والهجر والبلوي
إني لأعلم لا أزال معلما
أيها العاقل الذي شاء تزو
سلام وتسليم بدا وثناء
يا سائلي عن حصن قريتنا لم
وسلم إلى رب العلا وتوكلن
ورمتني الأيام أو
أيا سوقا فلو صورت شخصا
سلام كريح المسك بل هو أطيب
ثلاث تغطى العيب عمن يحوزها
ثلاث هلاك المرء فيهما فخلها
القلب طرسى والدموع مدادي
قد كان قلبي قبله متحيرا
بعادك يا عذب الثنايا ولا الصد
إما فررت من العدى
بنينا بأرض الله لله مسجدا
أسالم يا ابن مودودى فإني
رحم الله من نأى ورمانى
سير لهم طابت فما خبثت
أكلف نفسي الصبر بعد فراقكم
سلام كماء الورد ديف بعنبر
لك الفضل يا مولاى والحمد والشكر
لك منزل في القلب لا يتغير
حبيب لو أن الأرض تخبر بالذى
ألا قل لذى حمق تسربل بالغدر
يا صاح نصحا للنصيحة فاقبلا
ثقيل لو أن الأرض تعقل صاحبى
دعوه يبكى دما ودمعا
سقى بالمنحنى رسما وربعا
توفى راشد والى الإمام
سرى ونسيم الحاجزين يلاطف
لقد آن أن توفي العهود السوالف
وعليك نفسك لا تعب أحدا ولا
ما حاجتي في ذم أهل زماني
سلام جزيل نير اللفظ شارق
نهنى إمام المسلمين بغرفة
يتم سروري إن رأيتك مقبلا
إن أبطأ المرء في وعد وفي عدة
توفى بحر الجود والزهد والتقى
ترفع عن الفعل الذي يضع الفتى
أأخاف من ريب الزمان وصرفه
ورد الكتاب وسرني إتيانه
ما حذرن الدنيا كما تحذر الحية
بوركت غرفة وبورك من قام
عجلة الإنسان لوم
إن كنت قد عدت إلى العافيه
