1. Stop, we said, in the dwellings of Layla, so we may stand

A willing heart, and refusal

8. Do not be surprised if I shed my tears in the dwellings
For I have tearful nights of memories

9. The rain clouds weeping over it gave drink
To her dwellings, the copious tears pouring down

10. As I would give it drink morning and evening
Tomorrow my streaming tears will give it drink

11. Oh gather, if you are my loved ones
Around the dwellings, for I am gathered

12. Around a dwelling, crooked, where the north winds
Would howl, powerful gales

13. Its dwellers and people left long ago
Where the heavy rains would pool and gather

14. I stand, bringing it to life, as my tears flow
For standing in such dwellings heals the heart

15. I ask about them, though the winds answer me
Traces effaced by the raging gales

16. So beasts of the wilds lie down in them
Where fair doves once nested

17. My life there was once beautiful and serene
With the shade of those dwellings as my cloak

18. The dwelling of Layla gave drink to every comer and goer
And though desire for it circles me today

19. A maiden whose face rivals the sun, and night
Her cheek smooth as pearl, her figure slender as a twig

20. When she sits, she glides upon the earth in gentleness
When she walks, she sways, stirring feelings

21. If she faces you, the heavens rain from her face
And it bows before her, though lofty

22. The glow of her face shames the light of the sun
Her cloak revealing what lay beneath

23. She prefers the cold's sting to her body
So her clothes pain her, and her mantilla

24. Her brilliance shines through her veil
Which cannot conceal her radiant cheeks

25. She is accustomed to slaying her lovers
As if she were allied with killing people

26. She is used to drawing our swords with her love
With domains in the wilds subject to her

27. Clement, forgiving sinners with his pardon
Ever forgiving them, so gentle

28. O community of Islam, your imam
Is a pious imam, untroubled by tremors

29. So do not despair, whatever sins you commit
His noble qualities have pity for you

30. Without him, guidance would collapse, and the mountains
Of resolve crumble, as foes exult

31. Your world would be racked by the tremors of time
Those tremors plunging you into ignominy

32. The pillar of religion would shake and its wall crack
Traces of piety and the scripture disabled

33. The young sultan is a fierce, angry lion
Before whom the rulers bow in obedience

34. A king owning the world, which fears and obeys him
With its domains and factions under his command
