1. Learn knowledge truly, O youth of my life
And do not neglect its chapter while you are still young

2. For knowledge is easy when you are young
And not easy when you become old

3. And knowledge is the most beneficial thing for youth
Educating them was like engraving on stone

4. Indeed, knowledge has morals and a reminder
For the heedless, and a reminder for the mindful

5. And lessons and advice, then benefits
For the questioners, and ideas for the observant

6. So the ignorant is despised, no wonder!
While the knowledgeable is honored amongst people

7. The servant attains the rank of the noble
Through knowledge, and the free becomes the best of ranks

8. I advised you, so hold on to the advice of a youth
Who is affectionate, compassionate, pure from gloom

9. So do not sit with people of evil, my boy
And flee from them and beware of them

10. And do not sit with one who laughs much with doubt
Nor sit with one whose words are noisy

11. And do not accompany a lying brother, and be wise
In action, words, news and influence

12. And leave the company of the slanderer willingly
And be forbearing, a companion of the wise scholar

13. For the gathering of people of knowledge is a rank
While the gathering of evil, to me, is greatest harm

14. I am a trustee, pure of love, of reputation
A teacher for you, guide, so listen to my news

15. I particularly advise Mahmoud of good company, for us
I mean by that Suleiman, the perceptive youth

16. Be in the mosques, silent and contemplative
Reciting dhikr, verses and surahs

17. And be dutiful, my master, to your parents, and
Be protective of them during the time of life

18. And observe their rights in every place
For dutifulness to them is the best conduct

19. Beware arrogance, do not incline towards it
The son of Adam is created from clay

20. Do not busy your heart with the world and its ornaments
For its seeker is at risk from it

21. It is deception, so do not let its appearance deceive you
And none choose it except the deceitful

22. And direct your worries to the hereafter, and be cautious
To attain happiness in gardens on couches

23. And stop the teacher regarding the etiquette he mentioned
And make his advice the highest rank

24. And do not oppose him in word or deed
And do not oppose him, and beware the evil of separation

25. For he is an advisor, none resemble him
For all who came, from Bedouin and from cities

26. And lower your wing habitually for the teacher, for he
Is the caring parent, famed for his wisdom

27. And meet the enemy with a face free of gloom
Even if he throws at you vulgar words, be patient

28. Be content with God's decree, lessons in it
In benefits and harms, hardship and ease

29. And if you loved, do not be miserly in that
And if you hated, love and hate are measured

30. And do not travel with lowly people on roads
And be with the pleasing one if you travel

31. Live long, settle, remain in good and wellbeing
And in a prosperous livelihood for the time of life
