يا ناصحا رام أن يقيني كلا
O advisor who wished to protect me, never
نهر كأن الشمس تملأ قلبه
A river as if the sun fills its heart
أصيخوا فمن طور الهدى انبعث الندا
Cry out, for the call of guidance has risen from the mount of virtue,
تنقاد لي الأوتار وهي عصية
The strings are pliant for me though they're unruly
يجد الردى فينا ونحن نهازله
He finds solace in us while we console him,
وزير والينا الرضى أفلح
Our minister's contentment has thrived
إذا كان نصر الله وقفا عليكم
When God's help comes to you
جاء الربيع ببيضه وبسوده
Spring came with its white and black
ذد عن موارد أدمعي طير الكرى
Keep the birds of worry away from the springs of my tears,
وردا فمضمون نجاح المصدر
A rose whose essence is guaranteed success,
طرقت منقبة تروع تحجبا
A veiled one passed by, inspiring awe and modesty
لاموا فلما لاح موضع صبوتي
They blamed me, but when the place of my passion appeared
هذا أبو بكر يقود بوجهه
This is Abu Bakr leading with his face
لقد كنت أرجو أن تكون مواصلي
I yearned you'd call more often
أموسى ولم أهجرك والله إنما
Oh Musa, I did not abandon you, by Allah I did not.
لله نهر ما رأيت جماله
God has a river whose beauty whenever I saw
فديتك جنب مطمع الحين من فتى
I ransom you, keep the young man's greed away
لولا قضاؤك بين الحكم والحكم
Had you not judged between rule and rule
رع بجيش اللذات سرب الشجون
Roam with the army of delights, O flock of passions
ويأتي من الهجران زلة مدنف
The estrangement brought about a stumbling lover
لي صاحب ترك النساء تظرفا
I have a friend who left women behind
شفق وشته خضرة في حمرة
The afterglow and its scattering greenness in redness
قد كتب الحسن على خده
Beauty has written upon his cheek
أرقت لبرق بالحمى يتألق
I was sleepless from lightning flashing in the fever,
يا واحدا في الفضل حالفني ندى
O One unmatched in nobility, the dew's alliance has favored me,
فوق سهامك إن الله يهديها
Aim your arrows high, for God guides their flight
قبولك ريعان الشباب فلا ولى
Your acceptance is the prime of youth, it does not decline
يوم تضاحك نوره الوضاء
A day whose radiant light brought cheer,
يدنيك زور الأماني
Your beauty lures me with false hopes
ليل الهوى يقظان
The night of passion is sleepless
من لي بأن يدنو بعيد مزاره
Who will let the one whose grave is far draw near
أموسى لقد أوردتني شر مورد
Oh Musa, you have led me to the worst plight,
رأيت حساما في ذرى عامر وقد
I saw a sword amidst the homes of 'Amir
يمثل لي نهج الصراط بوعده
He represents for me the path of righteousness with his promise
سآلفها إلف العتيق كتابه
Its eloquence is that of an ancient book
إذا كنت تجفوني وأنت ذخيرتي
If you spurn me, and you are my provision
ومكرر سحر اللواحظ أهيف
And the charm of the subtle lover repeats
أمولاي الذي آوي به في
My refuge in whom I take shelter from
أمن بشير إلى مضناك بالفرج
A harbinger of good news for your distressed, of relief,
كيف أصغي للعاذلين
How can I listen to the blamers
بأبي من هد جسمي القوى
By the one who guided my body’s strength
ياجامع الشمل بعدما افترقا
O gatherer of those parted, grant
ضمان على عينيك أني عان
My eyes guarantee that I have handed over my reins to the hands of ordeal
فاح زهر الروض فاشتاق الهزار
The garden's flowers bloomed, so the meadows yearned
خذ من حديث شؤونه وشجونه
Take from his tale its sorrows and its woes
وقف الهوى لي حيث أنت فليس لي
My passion halted where you are, so I have
بأبي جفون معذبي وجفوني
By my tormented eyelids and my eyelids
باكر إلى شادن وكاس
Awaken to wine and cup
مضى الوصل إلا منية تبعث الأسى
The union has passed away, leaving behind only demise which evokes sorrow.
قلبي بداء الهوى والحب قد تلفا
My heart is afflicted with love and passion's disease
سألتها علة من ماء مبسمها

O moments of temptation -
ظلما خصمت شهيد الحب عن دمه
Unjustly you accused the martyr of love over his blood,
سل النوم يا موسى وهنئت طيبه
Ask sleep, O Musa, and congratulate its goodness
باكيات الغمام
The weeping clouds
إن الدقيق ولعقه
The judge licked the porridge
يشقى بريب زمانها الأحرار
The free suffer in the suspicion of their time,
من منصفي من سقيم الطرف ذي حور
Who will defend me from the glance of the languid-eyed gazelle?
أقول وقد طال السهاد بذكره
I say, as wakefulness is prolonged with his mention
قضت خمر الثغور
The wine of the frontiers has legislated
قمر السما يبليي الثياب وأنت يا
The moon in the sky wears out clothes, while you,
الجنة والجحيم في وجنته
Paradise and hell in his cheeks
كيف خلاص القلب من شاعر
How can the heart be free of a poet
صب تحكم كيف شاء حبيبه
A beloved who did as he pleased with his lover
أيا متطفلا في الشعر يبدو
O intruder in poetry it seems
أيا ابن رسول الله رفقا بمغرم
O son of Allah's Messenger, have mercy on one passionately in love
من الأيام لا ألقاك عشر
Ten days I will not see you in
وألمى بقلبي منه جمر مؤجج
A burning ember struck my heart from him,
سل في الظلام أخاك البدر عن سهري
In the darkness ask the full moon about my insomnia
ولما عزمنا ولم يبق من
When we were determined, with little left
كان محياك له بهجة
Your greeting brought such joy,
أخذوا موثق العذار على الخد
They took the oath of innocence upon his cheek
يلحى الزمان وما عليه ملام
Time passes by with no blame upon it
يمينا بديني إنه الحب فيك أو
By my faith, it is love for you or
ولازورد باهر نوره
Nor of any bright, effulgent rose
يا مرهبي دون سلطان يصول به
O you who terrorize without power raging in you,
صرح بما عندي ولو ملأ الفضا
He revealed what was in my heart though it filled the sky,
تثقلت عن كبدي والحشا
The anguish weighed heavy upon my liver and grief
هل يلحى في حمل ما يلقى
Does the blame borne ever fade
أهدى نسيم الصباح
The morning breeze brought
والنجم في خد الحبيب إذا هوى
By the stars on the cheek of the beloved when he fell
لام العذار لتوكيد الهوى خلقت
Is it the blame of confirming passion that it was created,
في ملاح لك شتى
In your glances manifold
تسليت عن موسى بحب محمد
I found solace from Moses in loving Muhammad
خضعت وأمرك الأمر المطاع
I submit, your command is the command to be obeyed,
أسيف الوزارة بوركت من
O sword of ministry, you were blessed with
تبسم عن لما در نظيم
He smiled, revealing pearls in a beautiful array
طائر القلب طار عن وكري
The bird of my heart flew from my nest
جاهدت في تمهيد حمص راحلا
You strove to pave the way to Homs though far,
لحاظه قد أرسلا
His cheek has cast arrows,
ترى يا زمان الوصل هل أنت راجع
Will you, O time of union, return, I wonder,
خطرات الملام
The Blameworthy Notions
أما لك في أمري إلى العدل مصرف
Is there no justice in your affairs when you judge?
صعقت وقد ناجيت موسى بخاطري
I was struck dumb though I confided to Moses my inner thoughts,
خليلي قم لقد صفت العقار
My friend, arise, for the homes have been emptied,
قل لمن أسهر بالعين الجفون
Tell the one whose eyes deprived of sleep
ضللت بالبدر على نوره
I lost my way by the moonlight
نفسي فدى موسى وإن لم تبق لي
My soul I'd sacrifice for Musa, though his glances
طاول بجدك فالأقدار عنوان
With your resolve, destiny itself takes cue,
سألزم نفسي عنك ذنب غرامي
I will blame myself for my love for you
أسعد الوجد بدمع وكفا
Joy has brought tears that suffice,
أحلى من الأمن لا يأوي لذي كمد
Sweeter than safety, to one with a thirst unquenched,
سأشكر منك العقوق الذي
I will thank you for the disobedience which
أعلامه السود إعلام بسؤدده
His black flags are a sign of his harshness,
وفظ غليظ القلب لا ود عنده
Hard-hearted and harsh, no affection does he possess
إليكم يحن القلب في كل ساعة
My heart yearns for you every hour
عين الظباء تجنيها
The gazelle's eye, slain
لا تطلبوا ثأري فلا حق لي
Seek not my revenge, for I have no right
كم قلت للمحبوب بت سالما
How often I bid the beloved farewell in peace
علقت ببدر لامني فييه عاذل
I fell for a full moon, harboring no ill will,
أثار الليث ألحاظ نيام
The lion's den was stirred by slumbering glances
أضاع وقاري من علقت جماله
He wasted my dignity, the one whose beauty I admired,
باكر إلى اللذة والإصطباح
Hasten to pleasure and cheerfulness
ردوا على طرفي النوم الذي سلبا
Give me back the sleep that has been stolen from my eyes,
جرى من جفوني ما أذاب أجفاني
Tears flowed from my eyelids melting them,
هل درى ظبي الحمى أن قد حمى
Does the doe of the sanctuary know that she has set ablaze
فدونك من مدحي أزاهر روضة
For you, from my praise, are the flowers of a garden
وزاهرة المرأى معطرة الشذا
The fragrant splendid-viewing one,
أبا حسن لا حسن الله حالة
Abu Hassan, may Allah not improve a state
سل عن سهادي وعن سقمي وعن جلدي
Ask about my insomnia, my sickness, my endurance
سقى الهوى فانتشى العميد
The passion was quenched, and the pillar revived,
لقد أعقبت بالبؤس منك وبالنعمى
After prosperity she brought you woe, after sight blindness.
شادن لو جرى مع
Gliding as the sun in its orbit
قلب المعنى من خيالك مأ خلا
The heart's meaning from your imagination has become filled
ومعطل والحسن يعشق جيده
With a smooth cheek beauty is smitten and confesses its love,
رب ريم رام قلبي مبرما
Often, my resolute heart was struck
كم أعيا بحرب أعزل
How I struggle in an unequal war,
حديث عنقاء صب أدرك الأملا
The tale of the she-camel is morning rain that revives hope
وافى وفي جيده عقد من الدرر
He came with a necklace of pearls around his graceful neck,
أما ترى دمه في الطشت حين جرى
Do you not see his blood in the goblet when it flowed,
أبا محمد اعذرني فحبك قد
O Abu Muhammad excuse me, for my love for you
ياحسنه والحسن بعض صفاته
Oh beauty, and beauty is some of His attributes
طلع البدر جانب الكرخ
The full moon rose beside the Karkh
أما لك لا ترثي لحاله مكمد
Do you not lament his state, O Khamad?
ووردي خد نرجسي لواحظ
My narcissus-cheeked rose, warlocks recite
خلصت خلص التبر من علة
You are cured of the purest wheat's affliction,
دنف قضى عز الجمال بهونه
The youth's beauty has faded with time's passage,
يقولون لو قبلته لاشتفى الجوى
They say, if you had kissed him, the thirst would have been quenched
حوى الحب خمسا بهجة نكهة لما
Love embodied five, delight, savor, moisture, dew,
يخف بشرا إذا انهلت أنامله
He hides his joy when his wishes are fulfilled,
يا من هديت لحبه فمحجتي
O you whom I was led to love, so my infatuation
موسى ترفق ولا تضعني
Moses, be gentle and do not degrade me
وشى بسري في موسى وأعلنه
He confided my secret to Musa and revealed it,
يا سمي المصطفى يا بغيتي
O beloved of the Chosen One, O my desire
نظر جرى قلبي على آثاره
A glance flowed, my heart followed its traces
أموسى متى أحظى لديك ومبعدي
Oh Muse, when will I be graced in your eyes while distant
مه لائمي عن ملامي
خذها فصبغ الظلام قد نصلا
لمن خافقات قد تعودت النصرا
هاتها كالمنار لاح النهار
يأوي إلى حسب مثل السها شرفا
انهض بأمرك فالهدى مقصود
أقلد وجدي فليبرهن مفندي
تسليت عن موسى بحب محمد
أهدى التلاقي صبح وجهك مسفرا
أبو طالب في كفه وبخده
محا قدومك عنا الرعب والعدما
يا لائمي إن مت فيه اتئد
لا تركنن مع الذنوب لعزة
هذا أوان فضيحتي لبيك يا
اتركا اللوم في الهوى واعذراني
عبثت بقلب عميده لحظاته
تجلى شهاب للسعادة آفل
أذوت سموم النوى ريحانة الأمل
دع العتب رأسا فأنت الرئيس
وناضرة لها مني صفات
ولما تبرج خضر البطاح
غنت ناصية الظلماء لم تشب
هو البين يا موسى وقد كنت ثاويا
أذوق الهوى مر المطاعم علقما
لو لم تكن من دم العنقود ريقته
هي طلعة السعد الأغر فمرحبا
كأن الخال في وجنات موسى
غيري يميل إلى كلام اللاحي
هو البين حتى لم تزدك النوى بعدا
أعد خبر التلاقي عن ملول
زار ليلا فظلت من فرحتي أحسب
لك العذر إن لم أعد زورة
الأرض قد لبست رداء أخضرا
عليل شاقه نفس عليل
حث الكؤوس ولا تطع من لاما
أشمس في غلالة أرجوان
طمحت بأجفاني فأنسيتها الغمضا
تنازعني الآمال كهلا ويافعا
لله سر جمال أنت موضعه
أهدت نجاتك عوذة المتخوف
وداع قلب أزفا
ياسالب القلب مني عندما رمقالم
انظر إلى لون الأصيل كأنه
سل الكأس تزهو بين صبغ وإشراق
كيف ترى زورة الخليج وقد
عندي يد غراء أهدتها السرى
ما عاب ساحر طرفه رمد به
من منصفي وأميري خصمي
أجذوة تشعل
عميد أصيب عن عمد
رحب بضيف الأنس قد أقبلا
سار بصبري وباحتمالي
روض نضير وشادن وطلا
نعيمي في الحب أن تشقى
هل الأسى واقيه فليس لي
زهر الآمال
خذها عقارين من لحظ وكاس
طيف ألم شفق ألم
لزهرة البستان في غصنها
أرسل اللحظ للقتال نذيرا
يا محسنا حسنا قد صال منظره
كل قاص يدنو إلي كأني
دنت الساعة وانشق القمر
طليق دموعي في الغرام مسلسل
تفاحة منك أهدت صحن خدك لي
هو الفتح حقا ما على الشمس كاتم
